The Garage Gallery *****!

Hear me out here I am proposing solutions. I have been a member hear for quite a while and contributor when I have knowledgeable advice to add. I realize I don't have huge post numbers or massive amounts of posts per day but I am a firm believer in quality over quantity. If I don't have actual knowledge to add to the conversation I will simply observe. I have also confined myself to the tool discussions because the "Garage Gallery" takes hours at a time for a single thread or an hour a day to keep up with the discussion to gain any tangible knowledge.

That being said, I love looking at the garages everyone has built but it is extremely, extremely difficult! If you want to see one garage build you have to sort through roughly 3 pages of pictures separated by 48 pages of "so jealous!, thats amazing!, is that concrete floor painted?, Your wife is hot, I love (insert car brand here), etc." Its tiring.

I have tried to get more involved in the garage gallery including posting my own "subscribed replies" and I still cant get into the meat and bones this forum was founded on.

Is there a way to limit the garage gallery to pictures and build progress with a separate discussion on the same garage? I know there is a lot of knowledge sharing in these threads but it is so buried by everything else it is a mute point for progress. Or is there a way to keep the OP's posts at the top like a sticky? There is so many amazing ideas in this forum that is completely hidden by hundred of "filler posts" that it is sad.

Then again maybe I am the only one that sees it this way in which case everyone call me stupid and I will move on with my life

If you find a thread you want to see the OP's posts in; open the thread, click into 'search this thread' click on 'advanced search' and search used using the op's name. It will pull up each post by the OP and you then can open each post. Not real efficient but it gets you past some of the chaff.

I've given up on it. I want to see garages and the property they're on. I don't want to see what everyone is building IN their shops. I don't care about your Camaro project. It should be in free parking or general garage discussion.

The issue I have is that threads turn into mini-personal sections with 10 of the same garages always at the front and the guys building stuff is always burried.

A build section would be great. Get the pictures of stuff in a phase of construction seperated from the “I made, fixed, build this in the garage I built 5 years ago” threads.

It's the same on all forums. I bookmark threads I want to keep track of and if there is information I want quick access to I will open that individual post and add it to my favorites. I do this with a lot of car builds so I can incorporate ideas into my own build. It took me several times visiting the same thread and paging through hundreds of responses looking for one post before I came up with a solution to my ignorance!

OP.. I put a "Thread Index" on page one of my build for the reasons you stated above. That helps somewhat.

Just hit ctrl F and type in the OPs username. It will jump to their posts, skip all the rest.

If you notice a "Hot Wife" comment you can skip back.

The hard part is looking at a 30 page thread, but the OP only has 30 posts. There is a ton of junk to get through to find the meat of the post. Although, I don't really think there is a way around this.

I think people are getting too picky. Last thread that was like this was bitching about the fact that GJ was allowing pole barns in the garage gallery and not just "garages".

I for one find comments useful in a lot of instances. I do think it would be nice if we could self moderate our own threads as there are times where I wish I could delete the total BS, but I take the good with the bad.

So what is the best way to solve this issue? It sounds like I am not the only one. I love going into the discussion when it is a build I am interested int but sometimes you have to skip through 10 pages to figure out the build doesnt apply to you.

The sticky with all the information is super helpful for me but it still leaves the original post with too much "fluff" for me.

I dont argue that its picky, what I am thinking is there could be a better way to have the best of both worlds. A "pinterest" of our garages and a discussion of them as well

This is a horrible analogy. If you liked a TV show but it only had 20 minutes of actual show for a two hour long broadcast would you watch it? Skipping through 100 minutes of commercial would kill me on the show even if it interested me. That is my point.

Not to be confrentational but I believe you are very wrong on this. This thread is already proving that there is an interest in what I am thinking. Just because it isnt done does not mean there is room for improvement. I am trying to help this community and this forum into another level.

I totally agree that there needs to be discussion, I would be more upset if that part was lost. I am trying to figure out a good way to make the meat and bones part easier to access.

I have looked at threads that are over 100 pages long that are now just projects that the OP is working on. That to me belongs in another forum and turns me off to looking into the design and ideas they used.

Bottom line we can come up with a better way if we apply ourselves for the betterment of the forum

Id love to skim the OPs posts on the 1930s garage thread, but with 11,000 posts that is a pretty serious undertaking.

I'll bet if we were all paying members here... Ryan would jump on this like a duck on a June bug.

But since the overwhelming majority of us are free loaders... he doesn't have the coin to make such a sweeping overall change happen.

Ok here’s the problem. I didn’t build my garage new. Its has been a constant change for over 11 years. So a lot of my post have been about what I’ve done to my garage and getting it to the state it currently is. Many many people have there threads built the same way. Do you realize how hard it would be for say someone like myself to make a new thread about every item that came in my garage or hard it is maintain multiple threads. Its really really time consuming because trust me I tried doing threads for projects. Now I agree if doing a long term project on a car or something maybe it would be easier to do separate thread. It’s also doesn’t help that photobucket has ruin many threads on the GJ. To answer your question about the forum I would say this... this forum is about everything that happens in our shops and garages. There are forums just about welding, wood working and just certain brand of car. The GJ includes all that in one place.

I also think that a garage is just a garage. Through posting and discussion the place really takes on its own personality. For argument, if you looked at Bob Heine, 1/2 Cup, or many of the longtime members threads and just looked pictures you would never learn what great people they are by just looking at pictures of their garages. I could show you 3 pictures of my place right now but you never understand what it took to get their or the person behind it.

I agree with some of the others, these are our shops that we do whatever in and it builds a picture of who we are. I enjoy keeping up in one place with the guys I follow, it's kinda like just going over to their place for a visit.

I agree that some of the posts can be boring to me, I just scroll on past.

He’s the deal. Its your thread and your garage. You do with it as you please. People will follow if they want to. If you want to make it easier to post and take pictures Tapatalk is great option. I’ve been using it for years now and can’t remember last time I used my computer to post.

I think the OP just wants pinterest. A forum is a social thing, about as social as you get these days. Maybe some of you are antisocial? Some of the best threads have morphed over years and input from the forum usually helps. For all you guys that only post when it is really important, try posting a few simple words of encouragement, otherwise the threads die or the poster gets annoyed feeling like they are talking to themselves. I just don't understand it.

I agree with the OP when the owner is either very driven to finish before using or has the money for a turn key garage. Mike Zmotorsports started a new thread for his shop build (great thread) then started a project thread once shop construction was completed. In his shop build he did have post about landscaping and his deck, both informative but nothing to do with the shop build.

For me, I'm going on 6 yrs and the shop itself isn't finished. Life and poor planning has caused this. One weekend, I'm working on shop, next weekend I'm on a project. Today I did both. Having the one thread is easier for me and subscribers and friends to keep up with both sides. When I start my trike project, that will probably be a stand alone thread.

So what are you saying? Are you saying if someone posts a picture of his garage floor that he just finished applying epoxy to and it looks really good, are we NOT supposed to comment on it? It is obvious to me if the member posted the photo he is pretty proud of his accomplishment. That being said, isn't it appropriate that we acknowledge that he did a really good job?

Additionally, when someone posts a photo of something they did, many times it shows other members what can be done when you take your time and do everything properly. It can also show others what NOT to do should they attempt doing the same type of project.

Whenever someone tackles a difficult project and does a really good job on it, I guess I just figure they deserve a little "pat on the back" from a fellow member.

Nope.. that's not what Kev is saying.

There were 8 photo's, and one guy "quotes" the post, now there are 16 photo's, and another guy does too and now there are 24 photo's. This happens 5 times, now there are 40 photo's..

Quote the post, but delete the photo's.. makes for less duplication.
