Hey guys. I found this old Wilton C1 vise for $100. The catch is, it's a little less than 3 hours away. Roughly a 5 and a half hour round trip. Worth it?

If I understand your area of the country correctly, there was not (is not) a lot of manufacturing there in the desert, and as such, great vises are somewhat scarce. $100 for a Wilton C1 vise would be a "you ****" deal almost any place in the country. Where you're from, that sounds like a rare opportunity ... go get it!

I actually live more in the mountains/foothills. 5000 feet elevation and we actually see snow! In Arizona! Crazy huh? Haha We have a bunch of machine shops out here so vises aren't too rare but ones of this size don't pop up too often and at that price, it seems like a decent deal. Is it reasonabale that I'm looking less forward to the drive rather than spending the $100 to get it? Haha

I should have been paying closer attention to your location. I know exactly where Prescott is as I have been there! But I was chasing a girl and that was nearly 30 years ago ...

And don't feel bad about hating the drive - I hate driving across town let along the state!

Assuming no hidden damage, that vise nicely cleaned up, painted, new swivel locks, etc would bring over $400 pretty easily on eBay and probably not much less than that on Craigslist around here, but it might not sell super fast...just as a point of reference.

I ended up picking up the device. It's in pretty good shape overall. No large gouges in the jars are in good shape. The only main problem is it's missing the endcap but I believe I can source another. Very happy with the purchase. Can't wait to get to work on it and restore it.

The missing cap can be purchased from a member of the GJ site, Kevin Scott. He machines new ones and they are much more stout than the originals. I grabbed one from him when I was cleaning up my Wilton bullet.

Here is the URL:

As for your pickup, that's a great deal on a Wilton. That vise wouldn't have lasted 3 hours on Craigslist out my way.

Got the vise all stripped. Took a lot longer than I thought and it still needs some final finishing on the handle and underneath the swivel base but not a bad start.

Nice score. I paid 200 for mine and got a deal. If there is no date on the slide, check the spindle. A lot of the newer ones have the month and date on the spindle after the part number.

Very nice. I'll give that a check and see if I can find anything that looks like a date.

I see that you got vintage style swivel clamps with hex bases: nice choice, my favorite clamps. Great job!

Thanks! When I got it, it just had some 3/4" nuts on the locking bolts and I didn't want to have to grab a wrench every time I go to lock it down. I like the hex part of the locks because if I have to really lock the vise down, I can without the risk of bending the handles.

Finished the rest of the orange paint today and put it back together a bit more. Should be done Monday or Tuesday.

Here's a picture of the lead screw. Is that what you meant by spindle? Last two digits appear to be "78"? Can't really tell if the last digit is an 8 or a 6.

That's the part number of the spindle. If there is a date, it will be spaced after that. Such as 08 16 on my tradesman or 09 08 on my 450S. Yours might not be new enough to have it. It's at least older than 99 with the seperate rear cap. 99 and newer went to a one piece rear section with just a larger diameter dust cap.

It's looking very good so far.

Interesting. I guess mine has no date stamp since I couldn't find one on the slide key.

So here's he vise all buttoned up. Was a very fun project overall. Can't wait to get it mounted and put to use! Sorry about the weird photo sizing.
