insulation on half the shop is done. shop lights & other things were taken down to start installing the foam boards.

went with 1/2" foam 4ft X 8ft boards with some reflective heat
foil film on one side. i think thats what the silver stuff is.

2i.jpg

im going to need about 15 or16 total boards to cover the entire ceiling.

peeling back the film on one side to expose fresh white foam

some primer just to do a test board
6i.jpg

some yellow paint
8i.jpg

the paint reflection off the yellow background will allow me to see deeper into the paint for defects & scratches for when i do paint restoration projects. the white background is good but can hide some scratches & other paint imperfections i need to see in order to do a flawless job for special jobs we have in the shop.

So... given the big warning printed on it about being Combustible, are you not going to cover it with something a litle more fire resistant? Would **** for a small "event" (like a bad light fixture) to become a total loss due to catching the EPS foam on fire...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the paint come out :shocking: That place would go up like a wicker basket. Not to mention your insurance co. would probably deny any claims.

whats the difference having the wood exposed without insulation & foam or having insulation and then foam exposed? everything can catch fire. i will leave the ceiling with the foam for now. do you have any suggestions besides sheet rock?

This is going to end badly... I would imagine you're violating local building codes at the very least. Have a fireman come by & give you some advice... before the city shut you down.

*if* you do have a fire, the cyanide gases from the burning styrofoam will kill you before you reach the door..

....& you might want to also read the MSDSs for the products you use without a mask.

Big difference. take a lighter to the wood for a few seconds and then to a piece of that foam and you will see the difference. The wood will scar, the foam will light up.
It's your shop so do whatever you want but what do you have against sheetrock?

i guess i wont be priming & painting the foam, ill use that money to buy some thin 4 X 8 wood boards.

Sheetrock is no harder to hang than that foam. Just a little heavier. Two of you can do it easy. Just buy a cheapo sheetrock gun and give it a go. You might break a piece or two but so what. It's a way better job than the foam.

Edit: better than wood too. Also wood probably won't meet city code either.

Like I said in an earlier post. It's your shop, do whatever you want. but since you mentioned you are on a budget, rock is about half the cost of plywood and easier to work with.

I can see not wanting to go to the mess/trouble of installing sheetrock, what with all the dust it will create (dust that could end up in a customer's paint one day). That said, though, I would still put it up.

Alternatively, you could use hardipanel or some other type of paneling. Sheetrock will be cheaper, though, and if the dust from sanding is what you're trying to avoid, you could cover the seams with furring strips. Leave the foam up there, just use long screws. You'll have the most efficient ceiling for miles around.

just got back from home depot and sheet rock is a little less than $6 for a 4x8 piece. i just spoke with a friend of mine & after thinking it over, ill sheetrock everything after new years but first i will finish the foam. thanks everyoen for your advice. i might as well not be lasy & spend the little extra time & money to be a little safer in my shop =) thanks again for all your help everyone.

btwy, we dont paint in the shop we just do detailing. i wasnt concerned with the dust of installing the sheetrock. i just thought it was more of a pain in the *** to install & it turns out i was completely wrong.

thank you. we have much more work left then i had thought in the begining but thats ok. after new years the sheetrocking will be going up along with 4 more 8ft shop light fixtures & possibly another 2 4ft shop light fixtures. i need it to be very bright in here because i use the garage for detailing cars. i need to see deep into the paint for imperfections etc...

Another option for the ceiling would be the steel sheeting. It comes in 38" x 16' panels and is prefinished and makes for a great ceiling. 36" 's of the panel shows while the other 2" is the overlap. Secure it will pole barn screws and your done. It's about $33 a sheet though but after factoring in the cost of primer and paint it was the same as if I would have put up many other materials.

can you send me a link to this product? the ceiling has to be yellow. yellow gives me the best view of the paint on the carswhen im detailing them. i know it sounds funnny but thats what i need =) its difficult to spot imperfections against a white background & also on a really dark one. yellow is the perfect color for looking deep into the paint.

You can see it on the ceiling of my garage here. This product is called ProRib and comes in alot of different colors albiet some are special order. ANY place that puts up pole barns or shops around you can get it for you Im sure.

Some major's around here would be FBI buildings, Morton and Cleary. They all should have an office near you as well.

that looks pretty cool but the design of the material is not good for seeing into the paint. i need a completely flat ceiling or the images (scratches) wont show up right when i look into the paint.

Re: my 17x29 detail shop BIG "A" DETAILING queens ny

my friend paulie is comming tonight to prep the ceiling for sheet rock. some of the pieces of wood between the beams are not level with the bottom of the beam making an uneven surface to lay the sheetrock over. im not a quitter but i will **** it up this time. hes also going to notch the bottom of the beams so the bx cable isnt in the way for when the sheetrock is installed. only bad thing is i now owe him a in n out detail on his fathers mercedes sl. i guess this is a good deal, if i finish the job myself im taking a chance of burning the place down lol.

I thought the foam board went behind the sheetrock. I could quite easily be wrong though. Excellent work Andrew. Thanks for the tip about the yellow paint. Are you talking Corvette yellow or just a light yellow? I'm wondering because I just might repaint the ceiling in the booth/detail room.
Thanks for the excellent thread,
Chip.

no my stupid *** was going to finish off with the foam boards exposed primed & painted =/ thanks to some members on here & to my friend paulie who does this stuff for a living, i will sheet rock just not in a rush to get it finished. i hate having things started but not finished. im going to be installing a few more lights since the con ed bill is so low. after extra lights are installed & a few more outlets added in, then ill do the sheetrocking. im looking for someone to do it for me for a good price. one of my workers friends is supposed to stop by here in a few days to price everything out.
i need my shop to look really nice at all times. it makes it easier to sell those $250,$350,$450 paint restoration jobs.
and yes the yellow ceiling will be the best for looking deep into the paint for defects. i never seen anyone do this before but im not worried about being the first! lol
best part about paulie helping me out last night was me smoking pot then ordering spanish food from mr pollo II while sittign at my desk haha!
