I got this old vintage postal cabinet out of a dumpster years ago. It has spent the last two years in storage at our old house as there was no room to keep it at new place. I decided to add some casters to the bottom and use it as a tool storage box. The thing is a tank. White oak, 5/4 stock, hardwood runners as slides, dovetails, etc. I started stripping the paint but found it to be a real hassle.

That's cool and worth saving. I'd suggest you feather the edges of the paint and slap a coat of Annie Sloan blackish chalk paint on it. That stuff will cover anything and look cool.

Good idea, I will check it out. Thought about having a pro furniture stripper do it via a vat dip system but paint is probably best out here with the temp and humidity swings.

Well don't get me wrong, it'd be awesome to refinish the wood. But I figured since you had already dedicated it to tools this would be a simple solution. My wife has redone a couple pieces of finished furniture and when she told me it took no prep I laughed and told her she was even more nuts then normal. Well guess what, there's no prep required for this stuff, just a simple wipe down. But if you don't feather the edges those will show even though it doesn't need to be perfect. Also I think I remember seeing some reds in that coating. Maybe something might pop that works for you other then black.

Lube the slides and keep the casters oiled.
You will surprised at how heavy it gets.
