a small rant here , picked up a set of impact swivel sockets bout 6 monthes ago
1/2 drive 12mm thru 21 mm price was only 30.00 so what the hell
well yesterday i broke the 18 mm , went to store to see about exchanging it.
i was then told warrenty was only 90 days and needed receipt
to me the 90 days is kinda short , yeah the set was only 30.00, but it does not state anywhere on sockets or container about any 90 day warrenty
ok well anyway i said no big deal how bout you sell me a 18 mm as a single and i will buy it , manager said nope couldnt break up a set , now im am getting a little upset .
now i can get one off the tool truck for bout 20 to 35 dollars OR i could be dishonest so to speak and buy a whole new set for 30.00 wait a week and exchange the old broke socket and then have 2 complete sets...
not that i would mind you .....
i just thought manager was being an asswipe for not selling me a new one
hell if it came back broke in under 90 days , they would break up a set then ....
ok rant over
guys keep this in mind when dealing with northern tool .....

$30 for a set of swivel impact sockets, that is throw away prices. Does the container that they came in say lifetime warranty? If not then you have no case and Northern Tool was being generous and giving you a 90 day warranty.

I haven't found their after sales support to be very good. A couple of years ago, I bought one of those air tool accessory packs that comes with a chuck, some couplers, a cheap blow gun, etc. When I opened the package a week or so later to use the chuck, it was broken, right out of the package. A week or so later, my wife went to do what I assumed would be a no hassles exchange (or return and repurchase) and was hassled...was ultimately told by the manager that he'd make a "1 time exception" but that opened product couldn't be returned!

Northern ***** now. Talk about a company ruining itself! Went to buy some hydrulic parts a few months back. Only hydraulics sold are a small corner in the back of the store. Its "Northern Tool" now. The suceeded in having a good specialty store with some inexpensive tools become a generic tool store with rather expensive prices for low quality tools. The best example I have ever seen of execs being out of touch with their customer base. They may have sold more tools than hydraulic or other parts, but what brought people in was the fact it was the best place to go for that kind of speciality stuff.

I have those swivels, never broke one, but swivel impact sockets are definitely a truck tool purchase for longevity.

Northern Tool = Harbor Freight with a different name. There are a few items I'll get there - they have a pretty good selection of pressure washer parts and supplies - but for the most part I'll pass.

I've got a set of the HF 3/8" impact swivels, and have had absolutely no problems with them with daily use. They look identical to the Genius ones, and compare pretty decently to the few SO ones I've got.

IMO, for the price (~$20) and lifetime warranty (and they'll break up sets to warranty out individual sockets), I'd go with the HF set and replace the ones broken most frequently with the SO sockets.

I'm confused, were they Northern brand sockets or no-name sockets?

I like to stop by Northern every once in a while but I hardly buy anything.

i agree 100 percent , that 30.00 is throwaway prices
keep in mind i was going to buy another 18 mm if he would sell it to me , but he refused with a reason to me that was very lame
i will just replace the broken socket and move on :)
