New Lennox Tool Chest at Lowes

Holy cow I just saw the Lennox roller tool chest at Lowes today and it is not very good at all. The drawers were not smooth, it was very cheaply made and felt flimsy, the wheels were el cheapo plastic and literally nothing felt good about it. It was also about $450.

I don't like to bash brands and I have always liked Lennox as a brand but the quality of this box is shockingly bad and its hard to imagine why they put their name on this and why Lowes is even trying to sell it.

Anyone else see this? I admittedly didnt spend a whole lot of time looking at it because I was just swinging by to see if they really were carrying Craftsman tools (not at my store) and I was in a hurry. With so many relatively good low cost boxes to choose from now I don't see this lasting long.

I saw one last night. I didn't have time to really look it over, but it didn't look like anything really special. It will probably be later in 2018 before Craftsman starts showing up.

Yeah, I saw it yesterday and thought the same as you. I'd be amazed if Lenox actually makes this thing. High name-recognition brands are having a great time lately licensing their name to junky products. Snap-on is doing it with those crappy tools at Costco.

I think it's a mistake. People who don't know what the quality brands are won't be impressed by a "Lenox" crappy tool cab, and people who do know what the quality brands are but are unaware of brand licensing might see that cabinet and then decide that Lenox now makes **** and should be avoided.

That's correct it's a middle of the road Waterloo box sourced by SBD, just like the ones Sears sourced from Waterloo for Craftsman, so it kinda is a Craftsman. Anyway, Craftsman from SBD will hit stores later in the year next year. Nice truck BTW.

Let's just hope SB&D doesn't go the same route for Craftsman boxes as well.
SB&D owns Lennox. They bought the company from Newell/Rubbermaid. Lennox was quality stuff. So the box is Waterloo. I am not a fan of their boxes and I own a Craftsman. red and gray and a Dayton branded pair.. The fact that they would source such a cheesy set from Waterloo, that is not that great to start with, and hang a Lennox name plate on it, does not speak well for where they are going. Quality Craftsman is a distant memory: Lennox was a quality brand when they bought it.

Wait, Stanley killed Lennox? It was fine until Stanley bought it, because Newell Rubbermaid was doing a great job? That doesn't sound quite right...

Edit - looked it up, SBD bought Lennox a barely over a year ago, along with Irwin. Newell Rubbermaid had already run both brands into the ground IMO.

Both brands are mainstream consumer focused and they fit the bill for that market, that's what they are now. This Waterloo box will work perfectly well for the average homeowner who walks into Lowes and buys one.

That may be true but bringing out a low end box under that brand only made it worse. Lennox used to be contractor grade stuff. They started out and continued to be known for their saw blades. If this is how SB&D is going to deal with Lennox, what is in store for Craftsman? Sadly, they all do it. You can be a Snap On guy, on the cheap, at Costco. They put the name on lights and gloves and such. I guess it takes a lot of junk to ruin a brand name. Craftsman was still worth a pile to SB&D, in spite of Sears' best efforts. On the other hand, they seem to be careful with what the DeWalt label goes on.

I agree it probably doesn't help the perception of Lenox to have more cheap **** with their name on it (Snap On doesn't seem to suffer from selling their cheap ****, but they do it through a different channel). My impression of the last 10 years of Lenox is that they offer decent quality, overpriced Chinese- made hand tools... I don't see a lot of value there myself. I haven't used enough of their blades to have a sense of how they hold up.

I think Stanley has done a decent job not crapping up their domestic brands, but Apex and Newell Rubbermaid set the bar so low I'm not sure that's saying much.

Snap-on doesn't make the cheap **** sold at Costco...they just licensed their name to be put on it. Probably to trick the uninitiated into thinking they bought quality.

Saw it at my local Lowes, horrible drawer layout, flimsy and overall not worth half of what Lowes is selling it for.

That is a fine distinction. Snap On gets a lot of their stuff from outside sources. Do you have any informatiin as to whom they licenced their name to or is it just what you choose to believe. The items might have been made for Costco but that is not the same as licenseing the name to a third party. Is it any different from a Waterlloo box marked Lenox? You stick yor name on it and you own it.

Since you "might" know, please inform us all. Please. Or is it what you choose to believe?

I have seen products with the GE name that actually says that GE licensed their name to them for that product. You said that Snap On licensed their name. You made the claim. That is like me claiming that SnapOn did not make one of their ratchets and asking you to prove me wrong. The assumption is that if a msnufacturer puts their name on something, they made it until there is proof to the contrary. Can you prove that Snap On licensed a third party to make stuff for Costco? I don't choose to believe anything without any proof.

Uh, it's perfectly clear to everyone that Snap On doesn't manufacture flashlights and **** for Costco, right? I see the point you're making, but I think you're tilting at windmills.

I never thought they did but a lot of their other stuff is not made by them either. The original point was whether they licensed somebody else to supply Costco and so far I have not heard anything to prove that they have. How do you think SnapOn looks better hiring a 3rd party to supply Costco rather than doing it themselves? I never said that stuff was available in other places. It comes down to what is really Snap On. The tool truck thread has shown us that plenty of Snap On comes from other sources. As I said, if you put your name on it, you own it. I have actually never read anything bad about the Costco stuff. Snap On has Bluepoint for a second line but this stuff is branded Snap On for better or worse. There might also be an issue with their drivers if they start selling the same stuff in stores, especially at Costco prices.
