No but that looks like another one of John L Longs vises. Thanks Get, I added the patent photo of the Versa Vise type.

So where does Will Burt get involved, manufacturing under licence?

Shift, that looks like a Wilton Turret vise. It's hard to tell but it looks like the jaw is missing a major part, but it could just be the photo. The vise rotates from high machinist type jaws to low woodworking jaws.
Not worth that much in my world I've seen the in the 100-150 range. I bought a similar one by Sheldon for $50.
Thanks for the stickers. I'll post some pics when I put them on. The color is very close to my original.

Boatman:
You're right about that vise. Thanks!
I emailed the seller for some more info. We'll see if he gets back to me or gets insulted when he learns he probably can't sell a busted vise for $400

I took my 406 apart to move it and it "only" weighs 160

Hey guys, I picked up this Parker 373 swivel jaw (pin frozen). It has 5" smooth jaws. Looks like someone put a different main screw in it. Also instead of the horse shoe style collar they I guess drilled a hole underneath and fastened with a collar there. I will take it apart next week. Any idea on approximate date of this.

excellent info  I'm not blessed with the knowledge that you and some of the other vise guru's have so it's great to catch snippets on this forum.
If you need more pics shout up.

Thanks for the note, I would love a couple more pic's and possibly the jaw width, and weight. I'll add you post and the info it to the spreadsheet in my signature. Thanks in advance Kevin.

Nice link you found GET.

OK, which one of you guys snagged this 7 inch (according to the seller) swivel jaw Prentiss for $75?
Even if it had 5 inch jaws and opened to 7 inches, it is still a bargain.

( Porterville CA Craigslist )

Can anyone id this vise? It is missing the swivel base. The bump at the end of the screw I assume had a washer to prevent opening to far?
It does have a 4” jaw.
Thanks for the help.

Does anybody else think Columbian?

The lack of cast in ID markings, model numbers, etc. means the vise was probably manufactured and sold to retailers who then put stickers on them and sold them in their stores.
I have a similar vise with a paper sticker that says "FINE Products Chicago"

Anyone know why Prentiss would not put their name on a vise? And age of this 3 1/2” jaw? It has #87 in two places. Thanks!

Seems pretty common with the early Prentiss line. Look closely on the narrow flat static tower, just behind the swivel mech. Look for traces of raised lettering there. Also, check the main nut for PVco or similar.

Based on the width of slat of the pallet under the vise, 7" jaws seems dubious, I would want to suggest may be it is even 4" but at $75 (assuming there is no damage) that is still pretty good deal.

That's what I thought too.
I got some more information about that particular vise. The seller said it weighed 125 pounds. Who knows if his scale was accurate.
Anyway, I missed it so I'll never know. It would have been a 4 hour drive one way, but my brother lives half an hour drive from there. It could have worked out...

Hi all, just a few pics of my vises. This thread was invaluable while learning about them before and after purchase so I thought I would contribute. Caught the bug from my dad, he has an old Reed (104 I believe)

Reed 404 (missing the correct pin), Craigslist ad....$80 down from a hundred. Was thinking more like $30-$50 but I think the vise deserved some love don't you.

Here's the Reed 404 pics, next post will be the Snap-on 1740 tradesman....

Scooternut that 408 is awesome.

Found this at a garage sale, $20....old guy preferred the 5" USA craftsman bolted to his bench. Unsure of the model but it wasn't a Reed, it was a standard issue hobby vise. I'm sure had this retained its snapon sticker he would have called more for it haha....to be honest I wasn't sure what it was at the time myself. Needs more polish on the spindle and handle but I'm fine with it for now.

Research on the site says if the pipe jaws aren't cast in, most likely it's made in USA, not an import. No visible full date on the key but i see an 8, so built in the 80's is my guess....before the 1745 models came out.

Next post is a little craftsman I found at a hoarders estate sale.....

Little craftsman no. 5246 found at a hoarders estate sale. Only other vise was an old english record the son decided to keep. Good call for him. I don't think this one had ever been used or mounted. Have yet to find a place to clamp if so it lives in the toolbox for now hehe.

My last vise (for a while lol) is my newest project found while looking for a Reed combination vise to bolt to my main bench.....ended up with a Wilton 600 instead......

MrDane,
Those are some cool finds ! What shade of green is the 404 wearing ? It looks like Valspar leaf green to me.

Regards,
Shawn

I agree with Allfast
Major league score on that Wilton tradesman for only $20.
And a nice job on the repaint.

Is it leaf green?

Thanks Shawn, always got an eye out for old iron. I'm pretty sure it was gloss Sage Green, rustoleum. Considered a hammered copper but the green suits it I think.

Check out this huge vice I saw on the weekend. It’s at “The Guild” in Bradford, Ontario. The Guild is a automotive restoration shop that has a show calledRestoration Garage on The History Channel in Canada.

Can this truly be a Bugatti vice? Value?

I can not find the post right now but Drives some month ago posted some info on the Bugatti vises and presumably they go for several thousands of dollars depending on size features etc.

Thanks man, sage green gloss from rustoleum  ....now on to my latest project......60's era Wilton 600, Craigslist ad, $400....was able to pick it up for $250. Sold some useless odds and ends around the garage so it actually ended up much cheaper in a way :bounce:

Seller says he used it in his shop the last 15 years. I think he said it came from a high school shop program that was shut down, and he had an identical 600 in gray with swivel base, also from the school. He was considering bolting this red one to the back of a work truck at one point if it didn't sell.

More vise than I will ever need, but I'm stoked to have it. It's not mint (see tail section damage with an interesting weld:dunno: , removed since) but the body has no cracks or brazing, and has a straight handle. In my garage it will do just fine:D. No slop, almost no backlash and strong clamping force. Date seems to be worn down and I can't make any numbers out. Plan to fab up a dustcap soon. Also have a swivel base being painted for it at the moment....

Magnesium Wilton 935 Bullet Vise, curved logo, notched body, no date code

Bluebolt
I finally got a minute to break down the vise to weigh the non-magnetic parts and the magnetic parts separately.
The results were:
7.5 pounds for non-magnetic parts - Dynamic jaw, static jaw/body, swivel base
5.5 pounds for magnetic parts - horseshoe clamp and screws, main screw/handle, main nut, single long pin for main nut, end cap, flat slide that goes on bottom of dynamic jaw tube (where date stamp is usually located), jaws and screws, center pin on swivel base, swivel base bolts and acorn nuts.
I would say you nailed it with your calculations!
It seems the findings support it being magnesium.
Also, I found that the main nut has a mark stamped on it as well as 740 stamped on it, I added a pic of it.
Thanks again for the input

Am I crazy for persuing this broken Wilton Universal Turret vise?
C/L seller was asking $400 which he now realizes is completely ridiculous.
It is so unusual that part of me wants to own it and just clean it up for display.
What should be my top price? Realize that this is the west coast.

Part of the woodworking jaw has broken off and one of the replaceable jaw inserts on the machinist end is missing.

Is there anybody here that needs parts from this vise?

Any words of wisdom from the vise gurus?

Rusty, nice 180 Prentiss! Just for reference, I've got a 185, 7" and it uses a #97 swivel base. Very possible a smaller Prentiss 90 Series would fit?
