Looks like it could fit over a mounting post and the wrench is for tighting it in place. You could swing it out of the way for storage ??

Bcom, Measure the "post hole" but I'd be betting it fits a drill press floor stander. Wilton did sell drill presses (not sure about now...)

A few pages back someone was asking for specs on a Athol 622 1/4. Here’s mine jaws are 2 1/4 inches across. They open up 2 1/2 inches. According to my scale it weighs about 7 lbs. Baby bullets got nothing on these little Athols!

Thanks Meatsis, I updated the spreadsheet and added your posting. I am wrapping up a restore on a #4 Athol, 1-9/16 jaw width and even these small guys Athol used Buttress threads. You Vise collectors will be angry at me since I chopped off the bench mount and built a tiny swivel base just because I could. I'll share pic's when I am finished with four of these small guys.

My wife and I are staying at her grandfather's house until tomorrow before going to her parents for a few days.

I discovered this morning that my GFIL has a red Wilton on his bench that might've been his before he bought this home, or it might've come with it. Hard to say but I'll be sure to ask him.

I showed him a few pictures last night of the first resto I did on that Sears my mom and stepdad gave me.

Jealous! One of the 2 little Athols you posted recently are definitely on the top of my list. I was also watching the one Tink got but it went for a little more than I could justify right now.

Picked up another Gripon and a Stanley Sweetheart.

The Gripons are all 2 7/8'' jaws, and 11.6 lbs.---Was told that they were made in Spain but I can't confirm that.

Three times the charm.

I just picked up this Parker 229 at a local garage sale $40
3 1/4 inch wide jaws
The little spring inside the nose still works well enough to hold the handle in position.
The seller had a description and price tag on it calling it a Meriden vise 110 years old.

WOW funny you mention that. A few weeks ago I did the exact same thing. On the exact same vise. The bench mount was already broken so I just cut off what was left of it. Any chance you can make another swivel base to fit?

Great score! I would love to stumble upon a nice Parker like that at a garage sale!

Well could add it to my to do list especially when I do another clamp-on batch. I noticed you already drilled the base holes and they are important to get them centered on the base diameter and exactly centered to the shoulder bolt hole. Can't have the base swivel off set and out of round. There is more then meets the eye on making bases for vises especially copying the Parker design. Gotta have the lock down holes accurately drilled. The two holes in the base have to align up with the brake pads, if not then a custom set of brake pads have to be made. But maybe a simpler design can be used on yours like how Wilton did their earlier lock downs on their Baby's. Machine a shoulder underneath the base and add a plate for the two threaded holes for the lockdowns to clamp. Still at least 4 hours of work. I'll remember and we can chat about it.

Haha I told him after dinner that Wilton was one of my favorites and he asked me if I would do a restoration on it someday. He was joking about it though. It's been with for at least 20 years now. He was a civil engineer professionally and I figured it would be one that he'd had for a while now.

It was purchased new.

Thanks Chris and 007,
It's a 229
The white paint residue might let me run the prints on a previous owner! :)

trijeff:
Nice work! I love that blue. What color and manufacturer paint did you use?
Is that wipe on chrome paint on the jaws and slide? Model paint? Signpainters' ?

Thanks Shift! Z*Spar Marine enamel, 76 Endeavor Blue brushed on over Rustoleum spray on primer, then Rustoleum spray on clear engine enamel. Nothing in the bare metal parts except grease on the threads and BLO on the rest

Spectacular polishing job on the metal parts as well as that paint job.
Do you use a soft artist brush like a sable? I have had questionable results using a normal all paint model Wooster brush with oils.
Do you like the engine enamel clear better than the Rustoleum satin?
Thanks for the lead on that blue paint. I can't believe I am considering a repaint on that Morgan Chicago 40 I did in dark hunter green just last week...

doily grunge: Welcome to the thread. We don't see many Dawn vices. They do seem to show up along the Pacific coast from time to time. Even Records, upon which your 4 1/2 is obviously based, aren't very common. I have to say that the offset vise looks a little comical but I'm sure that in certain situations it would be very helpful. Tell us about your shop and how you put your vices to use. I looked through my stash of information but I only have this one 1941 catalogue page showing Dawns. It looks like all three of yours are on the page or at least very similar vice models. If I'm not mistaken, the small clamp-on model in the lower right hand corner is the same as the one trijeff just posted in post #60449. Small world.

Shift: Very nice Parker at a very nice YOU **** price. Keep the Morgan green. You can paint your next vise with that great blue. At the rate you've been stealing...I mean, buying them lately, you'll only have to wait a day or two.

HaHa CRS,
I just pressed send on an email and switched over to the GJ vise pages when I saw your note. The email was to arrange a meet up with a guy selling a Shop King! I have yet to see a shop king in the wild. This past weekend I picked up a nice Panavise with the table clamp for $10 but they don't get much respect here so I didn't mention it until now. The Panavise deal was from a guy who sold me a complete and running Craftsman model 80? bench mount drill press for $25 but that is a different story. It always pays to ask guys "by the way, do you have any vises you'd like to sell?"
And as a further coincidence, the guy with the Shop King told me last week he wants an offset vise just like that Dawn being discussed on this page.

Hey Shift ... just whatever brush I had on hand, it was not anything special and that is one of the things I would change next time, i.e. get a really nice brush. This was my first brush job so I just used what was one hand, incl. the paint which is leftover from a canoe I built.

Haven't tried the Rustoleum satin ... use the engine enamel clear on just about everything (that gets cleared), no complaints whatsoever. I'm not sure if it is better than 'regular' Rustoleum, but I do like the theoretical/advertised heat and chemical resistance.

Like CRS mentions, you've been on an acquisition tear lately so maybe instead of redoing the Morgan just try it out on your next one.

Yeah CRS, small world! Stanley must have made a ton of these guys, they pop up in catalogs and in person all the time. That's why I didn't feel too bad modifying it. Wish I had skills like Kevin to really do it right!

Here is the finished product, made a new shorte handle because the original was way too long when sitting on a desk.9dc95c31012ffe1f320c50f625f31361.jpg

Thanks trijeff,
Your cut down clamper looks great. Lovin' the shorty handle. Gives me an idea for my Reed bookend project which has been painted (regal red) and awaiting some fancy custom hardwood bases.

trijeff: That itty bitty Victor looks sweet. Since we're 'fessing up, here's a 745 that I modified. In my defense, the stem was broken when I got it - honest.

While we are on the subject, speaking of broken stems, I just remembered this Athol 102 1/4 of mine that is begging for that modification. (I bought it like this)

Not a bad price on that Reed. It was in my watch list since day one, but I decided to buy something else locally today.
I personally prefer to buy them as is. Unless I know who did it, I am always suspicious of fresh paint jobs. Believe it or not, there are some guys (gasp) that smear bondo into a crack, sand it down and cover with thick paint.
I have only bought one cracked vise ever (thank you Strouty) and he was quite clear about the damage including close up pics of the crack. Priced accordingly! I am in the middle of making book ends out of the thing.

But selling to the general public in my neighborhood, people like clean and shiny the best and aren't too concerned with pedigree.
The term "resale red" comes to mind.

I just picked up one of these, I can't see what's holding the spindle in place and don't really want to strip it of it's original paint to try and work it out. Can you offer some insight please?

Found this listed as "Heavy Duty Bench vise" and that's it. No model number or nothing. Just a price. I quickly ran and snagged this thing up real cheap. Covered under this black mess is a fully intact Craftsman 5196!!! Even when you can find these things they are broken and this one is all there complete with spiderwebs and all!! Jaws also look very good and handle is straight

This is a Wilton C3 I just finished for a customer. They wanted gold so they got gold. They love it, not my 1st choice.

The jaws are interesting. 8" custom jaws but tapped for an 6" Wilton. My customers LOVE these as they allow for more uses when bending metal and wire. I very nice tight vise.

Aupts on eBay was a huge resource as always. Thank you!
