This thread is dripping with irony

search on youtube for picking locks, there are hundreds of videos

I bought a used one for a quarter of the new price. Does the same job.

Thanks for the comparison... seems many people missed the part of my OP that said "I can see it if your a pro-wrench". I understand they're a quality product, just at what cost. Its the little things and sometimes the big things that make the difference i'll use my HF 41" box as an example.
Slides
The HF box has ball bearing slides but even empty they don't even slide as well as my Craftsman chest does with as much as I can stuff in a drawer. Also I have a pretty well loaded drawer and if I opened it more often that drawer would probably be toast. Also the slides are much more permanently attached than on a good box so its possible your out a box if they go.
Detents
The HF box has cheap cheap cheap plastic detents which mean in the summer they don't hold very well, this last week I had to pretend I was Hercules because they didn't want to move at all. A higher end box will get you a latching system which is a much more effective method especially if you are in your box all the time.
Finish
That SO box has a nice powder coat finish that will wear really well. My Craftsman box has a reasonable paint job on it and my HF box has some weird scary texture on it.
Casters
My HF box according to my friend has okay casters but their is no way in the world I would try to push it around everyday on them. The same with standard Cman casters. Good casters are not cheap by the way you can easily spend $500 on a set of casters for a larger tool box.
Financing, warranty, and service
In a shop environment you need it now and the details of getting it are less important. A quick call to the SO guy your tool box shows up, you make weekly payments when you buy tools (some shops even do payroll deductions around here), and depending on the dealer a lot of them have warranty parts for commonly sold boxes 1 day away. Of course this doesn't mean anything to someone who pays cash, doesn't work in a shop, and doesn't use the hell of their toolbox.
Tool boxes also cost a heck of a lot of money since every drawer has at least 8 bends in it and several stamping and spot welding operations. I believe Elroy works in a place that does HVAC gear and he could probably tell you more about the pile work that would go into making every single drawer not to mention the rest of the box.
In the end its up to you on what you want but their are certain reasons to buy a better tool box and certain reasons that its hard to justify if you only open your tool box once a month. Personally I buy tools that do the job at a level that I am happy with and most people do that as well (although there are some that are just compensating with their tool collections and boxes).
Didn't know guys on here were so defensive about their toolboxes.
Correct... not spending $3000 on a toolbox allows me to remodel my kitchen or buy new wheels for the car, or run a few race weekends in the racecar. It's priorities. In the end, we each have a priority to what we like and are willing to pay for. For some it's a nice car, others, a nice garage, plane, toolbox, gun, boat or even a "trophy" wife.
cars newer then 1980 arent cars there toys with plastic i mean (urethane, styrofoam, composite) body parts instead of all steel body and nice shiny crome bumbers![]()
Not a "kit car"... it's a purpose built race car by Panoz using a Ford based powertrain. Currently has a built 302 w/ AFR 165s, FTI cam, Pro-Systems carb. Made 314 rwhp... can make a max of 320 per the weight or the class it runs in w/ NASA.its strictly a race car that has just barley met us gov standards to be streetable
i think the gtra are kind of kit cars, using ford powerplants but im not sure, im mainly a gm performance guy
So you admit that the things you've listed as "better" are better simply because you perceive them as being that way, thus they make you "feel" better... all subjective. I understand the desire for nice leather and nice buttons etc... these are the things you interact with everytime you drive the car. But why do you feel that multi-cams and multi-valves are "better"... do you work for Audi or BMW?If i'm spending Corvette money, i want to feel that i'm getting what i pay for. If i'm spending $60,000 on a sports car i want a V8 with four cams, variable cam timing, 4 (or 5 if it's an Audi) valves per cylinder. Independant suspension all-round. A nice stitched leather interior. I want a nice dash with quality buttons and switches etc. I've been in a C6 and didn't feel that at all.
Where did anyone ever get the idea that I was "blasting" people who buy fancy toolboxes? I simply said that I can't justify the purchase for a weekend warrior such as myself. I'm shopping for a 2nd box or toolcart and my search results prompted this thread. I was surprised that in this economy at this time of year used high end boxes are holding their prices. You'd think some people would be liquidating them to free up cash.I say spend YOUR money on what you want BUT don't blast someone for doing the same. I would have a 10,000 snappy box right now if I did not have 3 kids, 3 dogs, 3 cats and 3 horses. Oh yea and one wife. Would I ever buy a corvett - NO WAY. A tractor, big diesel generator and 30,000 worth of new tools and shop equipment - OH YEA. But that is my thing - to each their own.
From an engineering perspective I'd rather KISS... I prefer my 16V, OHV, pushrod powerplant that makes 500+ horsepower with no variable anything, no turbos, no extra **** all day long. Less to break, less to go wrong, and less mass/weight when running around the track.
Not much any longerWhat's this have to do with tools again?

Not to take this thread way down the off-topic road... my reply was directed at Moose who said that he "feels" a multi-cammed/multi-valve engine is "better".I didn't want to say, that engines like the ls1 aren't good engines. but the 5l m5 v8 wasn't a real good engine to compare...these m5 engines were not inventet for racing and they are far away from their posibilities.
![]()
if i take this engine f.e. it only has 3,2l and produces 400hp...of course you can build an engine like the ls1 etc smaller..but that's also a question which bore size etc.
greetings
My ***** is bigger than all of yours.....

then you'll need an overpriced toolbox to keep it in.....![]()

As surely as the sun rising in the east, every once in awhile someone will post a thread saying "I (can't believe) (don't know why) (don't understand) (can't figure out) why some people spend so much money on Snap On (toolbox) (tools) (windbreaker) (socks)."![]()

Loved my KRA box, love my Kennedy Maintenance Pro even more. When I retire the Kennedy,I may go back to another SO box, because no matter what they are a wise investment for the pro.

I can't believe this thread is still going. Of all the things to waste money on, a new Snap-On box is not one of them.
x2
pros will buy pro tools
and everyone else will buy what fits their needs. be it a snapon box or a cman box or a husky box or a homemade welded up POS. whatever works for YOU

Here is a link to McLaren Automotive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McLaren_Automotive
He is making cars now that can swallow any car GM ever made and spit them out its exhaust. On an interesting side note. Did you know that Henry Ford is basically the father of Cadillac? Look it up. Cadillac was originally made under the Ford name. Henry got into differences with the investors and ended up leaving the company with his name and $900. That company became Detroit Motor Company (IIRC) and later was changed to Cadillac. I kind of hate to bring that up since I am a Ford guy...But then again I would have left that **** too.
Your interesting side note isn't interesting enough and
My ***** is still way bigger than yours....

I have no definite opinion on the thread yet. My gut feeling is that if it starts off being about toolboxes, then becomes about cars, wieners, and sarcasm there is a problem.
Sorry just having fun Bull. I lol'ed @ wieners BTW
There is a picture in a textbook I have of an old-time restaurant. Painted on the window is a sign: "Hot Wieners 5 Cents." Kills me every damn time I see it.
I guess there is no general feeling that the thread should die, so I will leave it alone for the time being.
