so the thread about smokers was closed ...why ?
nothing bad was said in it ...
I just don't get why some threads get closed for what seems no good reason ...
I get this site is privately owned , but again nothing terrible was said
I like to think that maybe someone reading a thread like that would think twice about smoking and maybe stop
no religion or politics yeah I got it , but no smoking either ? ..lol

My guess that it appeared that the thread, was was started specifically, to bust the balls of smokers, which always goes over good, regarding civil discussion.

Saw the closure coming a mile away.

I was wondering the same thing. A few days ago someone made a remark about, we need retards to dig ditches. It was said in jest, but my sweet niece is mentally challenged and I fond it in bad taste and offensive. I reported it and nothing happened. So people can make offensive remarks but a topic worth discussion is closed? Doesn't seem right.

The moderators here do a great job. Think about how tedious it is to try to keep an eye on every thread here... not a fun job.

That said, I think the moderators should always post a one line comment when closing a thread. It can be as simple as two words:

No politics
No religion
Offensive subject
etc

It's a matter of respect. If a thread is being shut down, say why.

Some of the off topics like the one referred to simply do not suit this forum as in the end they only become drama.

Simple answer is the forum is about Garages.

Some times a reply as to why it was closed or removed only creates more drama and we do not need any drama on the forum.

Topic was closed so get back to your Garage and enjoy.

Fact is, the moderation staff here does a fantastic job. You never see the staff ditzing folks, and action is fair. Excellent job and a salute to the staff!

You're correct, at times, it's not a fun job. When a thread starts going south and you literally have to read through 5, 6, or more pages of a thread to figure out what's going on can eat up some of my personal time. While I don't have to be a Mod here, I feel the time I spend moderating is well worth the privilege to use this great forum.

As far as posting a reason why thread is closed, at times I do and other times I do not. There are times when a thread has been cleaned up, I post a up a warning or notice (whatever you want to call it) as a friendly reminder that if the membership wants a thread to continue then a few posters need to watch their posting or the thread will go away.

The problem created when a Mod makes a posts is that some consider it a ******** move. So if a Moderator catches a few threads going awry and closes them, all of the sudden, he is no longer doing his duties but he's now a ******** or *******. It's kinda like a double edge sword.

As far as the respect thing, yes I understand that, but that is also a two way street. Do you know how many times I have sent PMs to members about their threads or posts and never get a response ?

That was me.

I did see your objection in that thread, and looked back to what I wrote.

Clearly what I wrote was dark humor, but used a quasi clinical term, 'mental retardation'. It was also CLEARLY sarcastic and implied- in an overall way- that anyone who might accept the use of materials that had a detrimental impact on the mental health of kids was a loser.

I also noted that in the overall context of a balance, that your comment objecting to mine did a pretty good job of setting a tone as to what is acceptable and what is not. I made an off-color comment, you objected- everyone sees it, we all move on.

(Threads that get closed here seem to be those where a comment sets the topic on fire. even if it starts out as civil, respectful, whatever- if it is a topic wherein folks get crazy, the thread will get shut down.)

In terms of 'reporting', that is really surprising. It is useful to read the terms and conditions and understand the purpose of the 'report' function. If we all reported content we found 'objectionable', thats ALL we would do -you, me, the mods..... Divorce is a sin; having unmarried *** is a sin; getting out of paying taxes.... getting around what code requires...the list goes on and on and on as to what someone will find objectionable.

And finally, I am truly sorry if you were offended. I have a nephew with challenges. The burden he and his parents, and the whole family, face as we try to understand how he can fit into society is a never ending, soul trying challenge. Giver her a hug this Christmas- I meant HER no disrespect at all.

(And I dearly hope this post is taken in the manner in which it was intended...)
