what is a RMI item?

Removed from inventory - HD marks items that are to be removed from inventory and returned to the vendor (or destroyed) as RMI and prices them at a penny. Sometimes they miss removing an item from the shelf and customers find them and try to buy them.

My brother in law is an over night manager at HD in Tampa. I asked him about the whole "penny items" thing and he said "it's a big no-no to sell them". They have to be destroyed, or donated. Usually donated to local contractors .

It's amazing they don't fix the registers to not allow the sale to take place.

It's corporate's way of checking if stores are doing their job...That's why some stores stop you and some will give you the item without ringing it up.

So is the "get free tool and return the kit" working again this year? In store now and was curious.

Visiting a friend in Southern AR, saw these on a clearance table in El Dorado store... Was in a rush to get in & out of there, only had time to scan around ladder area but didn't find any of the old Werner multi position ladders.

Don't know if these lights are a good deal or not, and 00 pricing make me think it's that store only...

most stores stopped carrying the lanterns. as Milwaukee has a few too many lights for them to carry them all in store (at least without pushing someone else out).

The light is GREAT. I had the 18v, and still have the 12v. Wish I still had both, or at least a 2nd M12. Before my M12 power source from my heated jacket, I would use the lantern's USB charging a lot more, and still do, just not as much. If you didn't want the 360 deg lighting option or USB charging, one of their new lights (with USB charged battery) with the magnet may be a better solution. Very bright and small, but no personal experience with it (yet)

did they have a clearance price on the M18 vac or the Dewalt power station in your pic? figure you don't have the price as you said you were in a hurry, but more if they were on clearance

For Ryobi, not the other brands.

Not exactly true. Milwaukee does have a couple similar deals, but not what you are use to.

Buy the Milwaukee Fuel Impact/ Drill Kit, Fuel One-Key Impact/Drill kit + bonus light, or Fuel 10" Miter Saw and get your choice of 5 or so items free (9ah battery, Fuel mid-torque 1/2" wrench, Fuel Sawzall, Fuel 7-1/4" circular Saw, or stand light). Works the same, were the price of the free tool is taken off, but again not unlimited choice of the other tool

They also have 2 non-fuel kits. One is just drill/impact & you get your choice of 1 tool. The other kit is drill/impact/hackzall/radio & you get your choice of 2 tools. The choices for the tools are limited, but works the same if you don't want one of the tools.

I put the formula for figuring out cost of each item many posts back if you care to check the final cost of each item.

no idea , but I'll poke around. never considered buying, as they don't seem to have deals nearly as often. Well once at a clearance endcap I almost bought a Makita tool, for obvious reasons. I do know if I was need a more powerful tool, I would consider their 18x2 tools, but I'm not there yet (hoping red does something before that time)

Sorry that was the only pic I took. I had a friend waiting in the car so I was trying not to mess around too much.. ;)

i bet we all wish their was a Victoria Secret or makeup store next to every HD to take care of that problem. Guaranteed sales boost for both stores :D

unless of course you are like me, and your friend doesn't care if it's summer or winter, or the cars on or off, as long as they get to smell what you bought :p

OK, I get it. You hate Makita tools. But still curious if the "free" promos are broken down, or if you return part of it, does it lower the price? Thanks.

Sorry, far too many reports in this thread about experienced people not being able to buy penny items. A few get lucky, most do not.
Hmm, well I've never been stopped for a penny item? and im not talking stupid bath faucets, i'm talking $300+ tools. plus the guys that actually get them have been prevented from posting for over a year!

To be fair, just because you don't get stopped doesn't mean others won't. I've been stopped several times in the past, in fact the self checkouts where I am simply won't let you pay without bringing an attendant over when a penny item is scanned. With that said, I've had good luck offering $1.05 for the item, whatever it is. $1.05 is a common clearance SKU used so it's easy for them to punch it into the computer and send me on my way.

That would be cost prohibitive - they pay inventory tax on the priced value of items.

yes, the "value" of the stock on the day it is assessed, usually January 1st.

when i had a business, it was based on the costs of the items, not the selling price. this is partially to capture revenue from items that you have that you dont charge for, from packing supplies (or shopping bags) up to things you offer for free (like pens with your name on it).

When it is a promotion in store where you get to select another tool, the amount of the freebie, or whatever dollar amount if it is a set amount, is taken off proportionally each item. You can then return either item, and the savings still sticks to the other item.

This same principle can be applied to BestBuy as well. I bought an nVidia Shield media player with a bundled antenna for $20 more than the cost of the player. The player was $200 on its own, but after applying the bundle savings to each item, the player dropped closer to $160. No other sale came close to the savings. This was an item that rarely had a sale, and still is pretty tight on price. Most places that do this, one of the items can usually be returned (not all, but most)

Your jumping ahead of yourself. I never came close to eluding to that. I prefer another brand because of the quality to cost ratio, mainly because of the availability of deals on the tools, as well as the wide selection of 12 & 18v tools. I actually like Makita, but I'd say there's a price premium to them for comparable tools. The only dedicated tool brand deal thread here is for Milwaukee, if that says anything deal wise. In a perfect world, we would be all hoping for Festool deals :D

I think their tools take more of a beating that others, but I'm not tossing my tools around like some, so not worried there. They also are the only ones with a significant 2x 18v battery options which I like. Wish others would copy that.

Yes, I misunderstood you, sorry about that. Btw, I purchased the 18vx2 circ saw from home Depot online. It came with 2 free batteries. I just returned it to the store today, because I picked up a Milwaukee circ saw set last week. The Makita is a heavy sob. So I returned it, and they never asked for the 2 extra set of batteries, making them free. I don't know if it was a mistake, or just how the system works.

These may have been posted already but I didn't see them on the last few pages.

There are 3 stores around me that show stock but I could not find a single one of the Werner 6' scaffolds. Those things are too big to lose. Maybe its easy to miscount them in inventory. I spent 30 minutes in each store craning my neck to see in the overhead area.

Np. That is more a failure of the employee to check what they should have been returning. The description is only so long, and most of the time people are returning one item/box per sku. If you had brought them in and he had scanned them, it would probably given him an error saying they werent on the receipt. Do you remember if they typed in the item # for return, because now thinking about it, the same should apply to the saw portion. Or if the saw UPC does trigger the item to come up for the bundle, an associate is likely to think that's all that's there

I guess I'm not understanding something here. Are people buying an item that has a "free" item come with it (ie extra tool or battery), then returning the main item and keeping the free item?

I just wanted to return the saw at the reduced price, because I did not like the weight of it. I did want to keep the 2 batts at the reduced price. So i brought in the saw, and the online receipt. There was an issue that the sku did not come up. The manager got involved, and had to do an overide, since the online sku, and store sku is different. Not sure why that is? Theres definitely something wrong with their system though. I purchased the Ryobi hammer drill, to get the circ saw for the discounted price. I did the usual immediate return online of the drill, to keep the circ saw order. Well the circ saw is a big POS, so i returned it to store. Same issue. There was no record of the item. They actually gave me a store credit for the full amount of the saw. Which I wound up using for the Milwaukee circ saw kit(which I love). I cant imagine how much $ they are losing. I almost feel guilty, but who am I to correct the issue?

I wanted to keep the 2nd item at the reduced price. Its a known thing with HD.

Yup. Except it doesn't work like that this year from what I'm told. You get a partial refund making your "free" tool no longer free...but discounted.

No, same thing as last year. The only difference is that you could choose just about any Milwaukee bare tool to kick the offer in. So if you had your eye on the main Fuel Impact/Drill Kit, you would buy the $29 M12 flashlight. If you wanted another tool, you'd buy the kit and get whatever discount b/c you didn't have a choice for that part.

For the bold, if you have/had 10% coupons, you want that only applied to one of the items, as typically it otherwise won't kick in the free tool promo. Usually it is better to have it off the main item. This isn't the case when you only want the 'free item' and it is closer in value to the main item.

I'm attempting to do some long ago learned algerbra to figure out the amount of a free item, to where it wouldn't matter which item got the discount. brain is starting to overheat :shocking:

someone just posted a deal in the Milwaukee thread for a 9ah for ~$93 on Amazon. That's the best I've seen shipped. There is a local craigslist guy, who sells them for $100 a piece all the time. Can't figure out where he is getting the better deal.

Now realizing you said HD. I haven't been looking much there, as I'm already overstocked on Milwaukee batteries. Plenty still new in packaging ready to be sold with parted out tools

My recent receipt says "all items must be returned for full refund". Soooooo....did they catch on?

Btw, I wasn't trying to get the discounted kits last year. I was just in it for the free tools. I think I got like 6 or more.
