Thursday I was looking at a site that showed all the fire locations. I’m glad they mostly north and west of you. It’s sad that a lot of folks won’t be having the Christmas they had planned.
On the shed, with that high ceiling you could call it Shorty’s shed. Take care of that back.

Hmmm, are you thinking Shorty's shed because it is going up so fast?

It's very easy to Recon (Recondition) a can Just sandblast it and put putty over the pits and prime it then choose a color you like and rattle can spray it.

Thanks Don.

Recon...I really over thought that one didn't I! :D

It's something I'd like to try. Would want to get at least into the neighborhood of a period correct color. Not sure what "period" these are from. And that lettering...redoing that will take a steady hand if they are to be lettered white.

Hi Shorty
It's a real shame when people loose everything because of a fire.
There are a lot of organizations doing toy drives and fund raisers for those people and that is very nice to see. We just were given 10 names of kids to help out this Christmas from our church charity drive.

About the size of the shed: 8' high walls means no cutting of the plywood and it costs the same as a 6' wall and 12' long means 3 full sheets of plywood no waste of time or material

Andy

I want it done already so I can get back to some QST on my projects

Thanks Don.

Hi Dave

Lettering the Sinclair can is easier than you might think using masking tape.
I paint the can completely then cover the letters with tape and wrap the can with masking paper then I sand the tape off the raised letters and paint them white and remove the tape and paper when it's dry.

How many floors are you putting in that shed?.. stairs or elevator? :)
The footprint of that little storage shed is half the size of my 'big' party garage :bounce:

Off Topic Alert!.. (aka lateral geographical and interest based thinking).. Have you seen this?.. American Graffiti meets Route 66!!.. A new Mels Drive-In is opening soon at the junction of Lincoln and Olympic (the 1936 end of Route 66 about 3/4 mile short of the pier) in an old coffee shop thats been used as a dentists for the past three decades. I so wish i could get in my car and drive there like you can...

I really must fly over and do my Route 66 roadtrip one of these years. I have a vague plan to miss out Illinois, Missouri & Kansas and go from Tulsa to Santa Monica avoiding the Interstate as much as possible, either in a car (using Motels) or an RV. Is it easy to rent an RV?

You best come by and see the caboose when you take that holiday. There is a lot of the old Route 66, some of it original or near original pavement (rough and slow but interesting as there are remnants of old motels everywhere) and some original bridges. The plan to start in Tulsa is very reasonable.

I'm not sure about renting an RV with a foreign driver's license. Not much different than renting a car though, I would expect. They certainly are available for rent. Plenty of motels of course.

Baron the inside of cafe looks just like American Graffiti. Sweet. I’ll put it on my list to see.

I hadnt noticed that.. the V shape layout kinda mimics the roundness of 140 S. Van Ness.

The plan to start in Tulsa is very reasonable.

Hopefully they will have the planned museum and drive in cinema open opposite the Centennial Plaza by then.
Im thinking cut the miles down so theres plenty of time to look at stuff.. and i cant help noticing that further North the countryside gets a bit too English looking. The downside is missing Blues Brothers country.

Ha! Fast and Shorty in the same sentence. Don’t see that everyday.

I thought Shorty was the Turtle, not the Hare..
And just like that old story about the turtle and the hare, when Dan crossed over the finish line he found Shorty waiting there.

Was it Dan or Don? :D
Sorry Don, you look away for five minutes and your threads been hi-jacked.

I'm trying to get ready for our big Christmas party on Saturday and there are a few loose ends to take care of in the Ice cream parlor.
today I made pretty good headway on it.
I got the granite counter tops made and I installed them. I also finished the LED lights behind the glass block and finished up decorating the place.

The LED lights don't photo to well

I still need to finish out the window openings but the place is presentable now

Don,
The ice cream parlor has turned out great. The lighting, counters and extra decorations set it off nicely. It should be a very cool upgrade to your Christmas Party.

Thanks Bob
I put the parlor in a dead corner of the garage so it now becomes a meeting and visiting area in the garage. I hope everyone likes it.

Love it!.. you make all our dreams of what we wish we could do into a reality.

I'm thinking of doing a full garage photo shoot for all the changes i've made this year. What do you think?

Let me think about that :bounce: YES PLEASE!!!!

Is that waiting list for moving in to your garage getting any shorter?.. ive got my bags packed and sleeping bag rolled up ready. Im nearly in my mid fifties now so i will probably only be there for about 25-30 years and im fully house trained.

Definite yes on the photo tour. I’m sure you’ll have another fantastic party. Oh it’s probably about time for that safety check on the Vette.

Thanks Drives

The parlor is about 85% complete and as I sit in it like we did I keep getting new ideas for the place.
You're right about being Ann's helper for the party, She is a master party thrower
About the "garage tour"
I have every change documented but I'm a little concerned of how long that post would be. ( L O N G )

The garage is like the Roach motel They all come in but no one leaves and it is getting crowded in there (House trained is good)

It really makes me happy to hear that you are enjoying my garage ventures

How (short ) are you? I'm working on the format for the tour and we're set up and ready for Saturday (about 160 to 180 people)

The vette is waiting for you, and when you give the thumbs up I'll paint it

Don great work. It would be a shock to see anything less.

Wow Bobby
That's a very nice complement ( I don't take pic's of my regular work) lol:thumbup::thumbup:

Don: best of luck with the PARTY today and i bet the weather is perfect 75 degrees so maybe not a WHITE CHRISTMAS, but a great day all the same.

i have an idea for your post of 2017's changes, additions and events at the PARTY GARAGE. how about SPOON FEEDING US with a month's at a time per post. JANUARY 2017, FEBRUARY 2017 and so on so you won't have to be on the computer all night and we won't have to look back through many pages of member's comments to get the same information and maybe you'll have new stuff sprinkled in there too to TEST US.

cheers and hope your holiday party event is as AMAZING as they all seem to be.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I looked back over my thread last night after reading your suggestion and decided to just take a walk around the garage and take overall shots of the place and answer any questions that might come up.

i may list all the newly acquired items in the garage and discuss it as per request

So last nite was the big party, we were so busy that neither Ann or myself took any pic,s of the event. Tonight we hosted a small open house for our neighbor's son who is leaving on a 2 year preaching mission for his / our church and I just finished putting the garage back together from these 2 events so it is picture time!!

Here is looking down the drive way away from the garage toward my house

IMG_2231 by don long, on Flickr

Turning around and looking at the corner of the Sinclair gas station / diner

IMG_2232 by don long, on Flickr

Next we step into the diner door

IMG_2234 by don long, on Flickr

Stepping back outside the diner

IMG_2233 by don long, on Flickr

Looking in the big door at the new ice cream parlor
It still needs a name

IMG_2235 by don long, on Flickr

Directly across from the parlor is the speed shop with several new items on the shelves

IMG_2237 by don long, on Flickr

Still standing in the same place looking to the right of the parlor
It's interesting how many people miss the Planet Hollywood sign when first walking into the garage

IMG_2236 by don long, on Flickr

Moving to my right and looking deeper into the garage,

IMG_2238 by don long, on Flickr

The first building is the post office. This is where the restrooms are for our visitors

IMG_2240 by don long, on Flickr

My Craftsman saw display sits in front of the post office

IMG_2241 by don long, on Flickr

Looking further into the garage is the Barbie doll store (my wifes contribution to the place) lol The barber shop is next then the town church which is full of clowns (My Ron Lee collection) The mercantile or country store is the last store you can make out in the photo

IMG_2242 by don long, on Flickr

Directly across from the city walk is my parking garage full of driveable cars,
2 rows

IMG_2243 by don long, on Flickr

IMG_2244 by don long, on Flickr

Between the 56 ford pick up and the 57 Nomad is where I moved this display cabinet when I built the ice cream parlor. those are my whistles siting on the counter

IMG_2247 by don long, on Flickr

These display cases reside in the parking garage with my candy and gold scale collections

IMG_2248 by don long, on Flickr

IMG_2249 by don long, on Flickr

On the north wall or right side of the parking structure is my Brass tool collection next to the elevator that takes you to the game room / man cave
above the tools you can see the new stairs that were added to the game room when the ice cream parlor was built (behind the tool wall)

IMG_2245 by don long, on Flickr

On the south wall is where my comodity scales are sitting waiting to be restored

IMG_2251 by don long, on Flickr

And for bears fan.
My small oil can and tire repair kit collections are on the south wall too.
They have been growing a lot this year

IMG_2250 by don long, on Flickr

Back across the way and to the left of the parking structure is my 30's garage built next to the country store. The little police jail is there too
The tire spreader is another addition this year

Didn't want to loose my work

Across from the 30's garage is where I hung the rocket that I restored this summer. It is behind the parking structure and on the outside of that wall is where you can find my Blackhawk tool collection and battery chargers.
Also in those windows are my drill index collection and small air compressor collection

IMG_2253 by don long, on Flickr

You have all seen my Texaco gas station before but the yellow 1929 roadster is a new addition this year

IMG_2254 by don long, on Flickr

The back 55' of the garage is raised 3' to compensate for the slope in my yard so the back end is sort of separate from the rest of the building with the use of a 12' wide ramp.
Here I keep the project cars along with some good runners

IMG_2255 by don long, on Flickr

IMG_2256 by don long, on Flickr

I also built a storage room to keep the party supplies, tables and chairs out of sight when not in use. the room was just an 8'x25' box until I built a facade on the side of it. It is now called the lil barn.
The air compressor behind the hit and miss tractor has a very interesting story behind it. I restored it last year

IMG_2257 by don long, on Flickr

Another look at the rocket and the collection wall

IMG_2259 by don long, on Flickr

Looking back up the city walk from the raised section of the garage

IMG_2258 by don long, on Flickr

And I'll leave you with a front shot of the 30's garage

Thank you for the tour photos Don. It was the next best thing to being there in person. You have an amazing collection and are an inspiration to me and many others. You make collecting more fun by not only buying stuff, but getting your hands dirty in the restoration process and then providing beautiful ways of display for each new item. This is how history get preserved and enjoyed.
Merry Christmas to young your entire family.
