OK, my mistake; I misread Lugz intent. I thought he was saying he would never USE a sharpening guide for knives... :D

And JMLangford was the guy that posted the earlier one:

And here is a pic of how the blade vise and guide align the stone to the blade. Awesome sharpening tool as I said. I do note however the geometry of the Lansky guide to the smith stone and rod is different than the Smith stones I'm showing, as at the sharper angles, the stone would hit the blade vise..

You can get many different stones for these, including diamond, regular stones, V shaped stones for serrated blades, Alumina ceramic, etc...

I have a new one coming for the holidays. Glad you find it so helpful! Have read the base makes it even easier, as it makes an extra set of hands.

A bunch of small engine parts and what not, and 172 retail store shelves and hardware for a 150. I spent the afternoon cutting the welds on the mounting brackets because they will be wall mounted and I could double my the amount of mounting brackets.

Gotta finish some up in the basement for the wifey and then I can do the rest in the garage. Gotta finish heres first because shes mad because they were covered in grease and oil and a bit rough in shape.

Fordkid-that's some awesome shelving space to have.
Macduf- nice vintage finds there.

Well everyone, is it about that time for a poll? We are into December which is hard to believe.

Things have slowed down dramatically around here the last couple months.
Add to that my lack of desire to get up early on the weekend, and the few sales that have been listed just haven't inspired me to bother going out.

I may not have any more finds to share this year. :(
Hopefully, I'll be able to kick start my mojo after the new year rolls in.

Thanks 3bay, for hosting this year's thread.
I'm looking forward seeing who the new host will be for the 2018 thread when the time comes.

We need to make the right choice so the GJ Ethics Committee doesn't have to get involved. :lol_hitti

:lol_hitti I agree with that last line.

Thanks Jake.

Based on the past couple years, the poll was limited to members with high post count in this thread, who ALSO have not hosted before. Does anyone object to that part?

I was thinking maybe open it up to the top 10 posters who have not hosted before? The poll option has a max of of 10 choices anyway. Any objections to that?

I'm very fond of the past hosts, though I believe the idea is to give the title to someone different. Let me know. I hope to get this rolling in the next day or two.

Sounds good to me 3bay. No idea how many times I posted. I wish I was able to get out to more sales but my new job made that impossible.
EDIT - I only made 65 posts this year

It's a GJ tradition that's worked for us so far.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
(unless you want to paint it a cool new color, then all bets are off )

I've always liked the idea of sharing the hosting duties amongst the members.
It's a fun way to kick off the year until the season heats up.

OBTW, went back and reread the first few pages of this year's thread.
Ahhhh, those were the good 'ol days .........

Lugz, I'd like to see a thread or a quick-how to posted on that whipping process. I can do the braiding for the eyes, but I've never done or seen the whipping done...

I'm sure others would like to see the whole process!

Hear, hear! I'm always interested in learning new skills!

Outlaw, BB,

Well, the coil turned out to be just shy of 80 feet, which means I got three 25-foot tow ropes out of it! I've never done anything like this before, but I tried, inspired by your requests, to make a tutorial on splicing and whipping. All I can is, as with most things, it's A LOT easier to actually do it than it is to explain to someone else how to do it! Especially when it involves both hands. An attempt with one of my kids' GoPros (freeing my hands up, but forcing a verbal narration, with a camera strapped to my head!) failed miserably! HAHA.

Anyway, I started a thread. A tow rope is not a hand tool, per se, but it is automotive related, and it is vintage! Link here.

Lugz, I just read the entire thread and you make great tutorials!

I said this in your tutorial thread, but thank you (again) for posting this! This one gets added to my bookmarks for posterity!

Beautiful Job putting it together! I know it was a lot of work, so thanks again!

Thanks Outlaw for making a list and checking it twice! I was looking at the list earlier out of curiosity.

Where is Nine anyway? Why do I feel like he and Merc went on a sweet pick together and got trapped in a giant horders hord of junk, surviving on expired canned goods and an old shelf full of home brew?
Do we need to send out a search party?

I throughly enjoy everyone's contributions here and I alway learn a lot about rare tools.
It's always hard to pick the New Years host, so I'm just going to jump out and nominate Lugnutz for next year or get him on the poll or whatever. He just seems to been very active this past year:beer:

Yeah Lugnutz would get my vote too...

Outlaw finds the most unique camping items but I see his name is in red...

I think RagTopTA is the most consistent in finding the good stuff for a killer deal...

3bay, Nine is alive and well but according to third party reports, is on a new life mission and simply doesn't have time to post? :dunno:

I miss that guy!

Well, your name is right behind Lugz...

That's a pretty good assessment. The poll will help us figure this out.
One thing is for sure, Outlaw is the "Camp King" here, no denying that.

Yep Lugz is right at the top. He's been a real driving force this year.

Whatever happened to Zkling? He would run circles around everybody when it came to driving the thread a few years ago. We haven't crossed paths on the forum in a long time.

I snuck out and hit an estate sale or two last Friday, finding the following for $13:

Proto wrenches, P&C flat head, Millers Falls push drill with bits and a Proto LA hacksaw.
I swung by the restore and spotted a beautiful Walker Turner table saw, but I took to long thinking about it and it was gone when I went back. It was real nice, WT motor, original switch. But you snooze, you loose...

But, I have been spening most of my free time working on my find from a few months ago:

My wife and I bought a 1913 bungalow, which needs a bit of work. I have rewired it (it had knob and tube with a couple in wall splices) had the inside painted, floored and countertoped (somethings I don't argue with the wife on) and just moved in.

Been building workbenches in the basement, setting up shop:

I nominate rileysan ! What you guys don't know is that he only posts about half of what he finds on here ! Often times he finds lots or buys so much in a week that he does not want to take the time to lay everything out to photograph so he just does not post it! It works out well for me because then I usually get a few good things when we trade [emoji51]

I can confirm we're both alive and well. Any rumors of Nine undergoing a gender reassignment and becoming a Russian gymnast are NOT TRUE...at least not entirely. Between Nine heading out of town and other restraints on my time, I actually haven't been to an estate or garage sale in quite a while. About six months ago I started posting want ads on Craigslist for old tools, machines, etc...and I ended up doing 10x better than I ever did hunting for deals.

Now I'm in the position of having accumulated way too many things. Whereas before I was ending up with a box / bucket of hand tools, I'm coming across several machines at once. That allows me to keep something I want / need from the lot and sell the rest to break even or make a little. It gets a little crazy dealing with Craigslist folk, so I'm trying to take
a break from that and clearing out the garage to raise money for a new Mustang motor at the same time. Anybody want to buy a Unisaw or an Atlas horizontal mill?

I still do follow this thread and drool over things y'all find. It's crazy what's out there...we're all just a sale away from an amazing find. I highly doubt I'll ever beat my personal record but I look forward to trying.

That's a sweet looking house, beemer. A neighbor across the street from us has a similar Craftsman style era home and just replaced all his porch columns with more original looking tapered columns, just like yours.

 Well thank goodness.

Yep, never know what you might find right. In the past thought about putting an ad myself, then realized I was so buried in stuff and not getting rid of things, the thought seemed like a bad bad idea for me.

It's been the best and worst thing to happen to me garage / space wise. When I went to garage / estate sales I was in control of what I wanted to bring in...once I posted the ad large things started finding me. Yes, I could turn them down but who wants to turn down a free Delta 14" wood / metal bandsaw with a riser block? Not all responses are the same...some are "Hey, I need help with ***". I'm not an expert but I like meeting people and if I can help them, I do my best to. Definitely a double edge sword.

Having an excess certainly forces you to put a value on certain items and the space they take up. I don't like the selling portion of this but I think all those that frequent this thread get it. As I previously eluded to, I currently am selling a Unisaw I restored and an Atlas horizontal mill, among other things. Both were items I prized, and was stoked when I found them / they found me. But I've measured the amount I use them vs. the space they take up to be worth less than their sale value, which is yet to be seen.

Man, I'm definitely the debbie downer in this thread, aren't I? :lol_hitti But I look forward to offloading what I don't need and getting onto the next find...

Craigslist find about two hours away from me. I convinced the guy to ship them to me and let me pay the shipping. He was awesome and kept me from making a 4 hour round trip drive that would have had me sleeping on the couch for Christmas. Lol

I answered a CL ad for a Craftsman tool box with old tools in it, this past Saturday. Since I'm in the process of moving, I didn't have the time to look things over until today. Unfortunately, I didn't keep the original images from the CL ad.

For $40 I received -

- Craftsman heritage era hip-roof tool box

- Craftsman 1/2" drive, Circle-H socket set:

- 7/16" to 1 1/8" sockets, complete
- Reversible ratchet
- Breaker bar. Please note the original T-bar for the ratchet and breaker bar!
- Sliding T-handle driver
- Speed wrench
- 10" extension

The only thing that appears to be missing is the 5" extension and (possibly) a U-joint adapter. The deep sockets were added by me from a tote full of sockets he had sitting to the side.

- Craftsman Circle-H 3/8" drive socket set:

- 3/8" to 3/4" sockets, with duplicates
- Breaker bar with original T-bar!
- Sliding T-bar driver
- Speed wrench
- 3" extension
- U-joint adapter

- Snap-on socket box with misc 1/4" drive items:
- 3x Snap-on sockets (era correct)
- 2x S-K sockets
- 1 Craftsman circle-H socket
- S-K 1/4" drive breaker bar WITH the original T-bar! That's 3 sets all with original T-bars! It was my lucky day!
- Snap-on extension (era correct)

- 5-piece Barcalo DBE set in original pouch! F!@ yeah!

- Misc files, screwdrivers, and sockets not pictured.

Picked up this beast of a welder today for $100. Its a Miller 330 A/BP. Came with the foot pedal and tig torch. She will need some attention but for the price I could not go wrong!

That's the old Gold Star. We had them where I worked at Ford. They're built like a tank and you can stick weld also. Get a manual. I think Miller will still send you one on request. Did you get an Argon regulator with it?

Those are nice... Did he tell you where he got them from?

I did actually, pretty cool story.

“Ha,ha! I wonder if you were curious. I'm a retired Product Development Engineer who worked for a large manufacturing co. That has made CRAFTSMAN tools for SEARS for nearly 100 years. I am dispersing my collection of 1st production runs of products I worked on and was able to keep for myself. We have downsized and I no longer have room for my collection. So it's time to share them with others. “
