I picked this snap on “ t handle spinner “ today. Did snap on use cadmium plating for tools of this era?
During the war. Before the war, the 9/32-inch drive tools were chrome-plated. After the war, they were dropped in favor of the 1/4-inch drive size tools they introduced during the war (the ratchet in 1942, the rest of the handles and sockets in 1944).

Tempting as it is, I haven’t heard of a safe way to clean or de-rust cad-plated tools, so probably best to leave them as found.
As a WWII collector, I have a lot of cadmium-plated tools. Frankly, I don't treat them any differently than I treat tools with natural steel finish. I de-rust with 10% muriatic acid and I clean with penetrating oil and fine grade (0000) steel wool. And I wash my hands well. I wouldn't want to create dust and breathe it, but I don't touch any of my tools with a grinder or a wire wheel of any kind.

Flea market today yielded an interesting machinist’s box (military, unbranded), an interesting variant (model “No. 9”) of the Petersen Vise-Grips (sheet metal/fab), and another pair of J.P. Danielson waterpump pliers, these with a 1944 date code.

Outlaw: Check out the long small parts trough in the drop down front door! :)

EDIT: I'm going to post more pics of this puppy in the Toolboxes thread once I get it cleaned up.

Cool box. I love the chests with no top to open so they can fit under a shelf or get other stuff stacked on top.

I believe that snap on used a nickel plating during that era and if not it was shortly before then.

I'm catching up with my finds for the last couple weeks or so.
I picked up this portable band saw from a Letgo ad.
Came with two new blades.

This is a upgrade for me as its a deep cut and variable speed.

Next is a about a 1-1/4" Dia rope for a boat. I bought as a gag for my son to use on his 18' boat.

Here's a couple more stops.
On my trip up to met with a few members, I looked at every CL, Offer up, Letgo, Facebook for anything I was interested in. So I found some 6" caster that I'll need for my upcoming Vidmar cabinets redos.

6 straight casters $25

A set of 4 for $30.

Another stop, Channeloks, a Estwing soft face hammer, a Proto 16" adjustable.

Some little misc things, no order to the sales I went to.
A small Estwing sledge hammer. Looks like it was rusted pretty good, someone gave it a quick spray job so some fool would buy it. Paid $1 for it, I'll sand the faces to clean up. Can't really hurt a hammer.

This from a estate sale in a condo. A Diamalloy needle nose, another pair made in Germany, a steel block of some kind.

Some more Diamond:

Wanted to see if your paying attention. Lol.

Hit a moving sale, some boat rope, $2 and a box of 2" deck screws $8.

The Proto ext and the pressure washer fitting were free from the sale where I bought the SO ratchets. I had a pile of SO wrenches and the ext was in it. I passed on the price and asked how much for the ext, he said it's just Proto and gave it to me as I've been a repeat buyer.

Another estate sale, but on the second day, so not much left except these saw blades for $5.

a few things over the last several weeks:

- Waterloo box, some surface rust. $15, and came with a few decent sockets.
- a box of tools with mostly inexpensive sockets and wrenches. I sorted thru and kept the decent items, the rest will go to local Restore. Among the keepers are: an Armaloy pump wrench, the little Armstrong ratchet, the SK ratchet, the Penncraft breaker, a 1/2" universal, a like new gap gage, the Irwin perfect handle screwdriver, and the shop-made clamp. All for $10. Also included was the group of stamped, machine specific, wrenches. I'll probably donate those too.

.

Cool box! yeah! that try is interesting!

Now a Question: is that box steel or aluminum? Do the drawers have slides?

We would need to trade dimensions, but I think I have that same box in Aluminum with the following differences: The carry handle is like a deep version of the drawer pulls, drawer No. two is split into two narrow drawers, the cover does not have any stiffeners (or parts trough), the cover is NOT hinged; it has pins in the bottom to go into the front rail...

Box is 18" wide and 11" tall (can't easily get the depth right now...)

Cman top and bottom with tools. Guy worked at Sears back in college and assembled a lot of sets, all USA, including 6, 8, and 12 point. Most of these tools saw zero use. $175

I got a call from Rileysan a few weekends ago and he told me about a pick that he was going to the following day ! It was to a guys house who does property clean outs and also had a few friends pass away recently... I called the number and it was not to far from my house so I drove over and began picking... This was another sale where the guy is charging by the bucket, not the brand... I scored all the below for $45 out the door! [emoji51]

Vintage craftsman soft face hammer
Channel lock cable cutting pliers
Almost a full set of p&c 1/2 sockets
Several 3/8th dr sk sockets to complete a set I am working on
Proto oil filter wrench
Xcelite wire cutters
Vise grips
Craftsman metric sockets
Lile seal installer kit in package- used once
Snap on 10mm wobbly
098d2085cc7a5276ed905d3b59fffe90.jpg

Next round from the same lot
Ridgid extension cord splitter
Heavy duty garden trowel
Plomb, proto la and p&c chisels
3m roloc disc and backing-large size
Cman 1/2 dr ratchet and extension
Various wire wheels
Red socket box with no markings
Various tap handles

4310df95b9c598fa298a5bf677d5d4f5.jpg

also scored all of these pullers and attachments in the same lot! The pullers look rough but should clean up easy! Includes new Britain, kid tools and duro chrome.... Also scored the unmarked cman/ palmgren drill press vise as well at the same location !

Definitely steel, drawers have slides, dimensions are 16" x 11" x 8-1/2" deep, and it weighs 28 lbs empty.

Additional photos of the chest (armorer's, small arms maintenance, 5180-945-8425, 41-K-8425) and more info here, in the GJ Toolboxes thread.

Same chest (made by ASCO Art Steel), different drop front door and work surface (with three small piece-parts dimples instead of a long piece-parts trough!), in this CL ad.

Other examples from a WWII oriented tools forum and further discussion in this GJ Toolboxes thread post here.

OK I am hoping to get caught up with all my past finds today!

More stuff from Saturday's big tool sale where I spent $80 total.

Pic 1 and 2 from lower left: Allen socket, 4 Blackhawks, Boker pliers, Bonney socket and extension, the wrench above the extension is a USA brand I have not seen before, "Classic Plus", Fleet pliers and wrench and on top a Husky speed handle and socket. In the middle from the bottom is a K-D tools 2201 Carburetor adjusting tool with 1/4" drives on both ends allowing you to use the knob at which ever end you prefer, above that is bunch of Mac, then NAPA, then a New Britain pile including two distributor wrenches.

Pic 3 and 4 from lower right: A single Penncaft socket, a bunch of Proto, 3 S-K sockets, 7 pieces of Snap On, a single Sparta and Stanley socket. Then on the far right is Thorsen including that DBE wrench, 2 Vise Grips, a Vlchek wrench and a Wizard socket.

Pic 5 from lower left: Prybar, socket holders, cable cutters, welding magnet, a cool little slide hammer with expanding collet, maybe for valve lifters? Seal installer slide hammer, 1/4" drivers with the female drive insert in the handle, 2 magnetic bowls and the little blue box with various auto parts and special hardware.

Pic 6 from lower right: Brushes, because you can never have to many, a Chinese multi-tool, a working military light, 2 carburetor tools and a bolt gauge.

And more stuff from the sale.

Pic 1 from lower left: Apex bit holder, Blackhawk Crowsfoot, Craftsman spade drill bit holder and 1/4" driver, Matco flywheel turner, New Britain wrench, Snap On screwdriver and 1/4" universal, Stanley pry bar, tape measure and key chain screwdriver, pegboard screwdriver holders, Starrett chalk line and a bottle of chalk powder, eyebolts and some other odds and ends.

Pic 2 and 3 from lower right: Puller, pegboard hammer hooks, Victorinox St Christopher's Swiss Army knife. Camilus knife, Made in Germany wire cup brush for drill, K-D tools windshield scraper, Johnson protractor and an oil filter wrench.

I had never seen the St. Christopher's knife before and it took a bit of research to identify it, it has St Christopher carrying Jesus as a young boy on his shoulder. St. Christopher is the Patron Saint of Travelers and this is known as the Automobile knife. In real nice condition these knives bring decent money but this one has a bit of wear from use and will go in one of my cars.

Pic 4: 2 Coca Cola crates, 2 ammo cans, a Ford AOD transmission rebuild book I actually need, a Jaguar? knife, a local Chevrolet dealership yardstick, a large tool box with tray, a little Holmes heater that will be a great hand warmer for this weather, a Craftsman tool bag and underneath that a military hand carry duffel bag.

This past Friday's finds. I only went to one estate sale, mostly because there was cool Coca Cola stuff there I couldn't afford but had never seen before. Most tools were way overpriced even for a first day. A Craftsman large DOE wrench was $28!

Anyways I picked up a few things, 4 Snap-On wrenches, a Matco DBE and an Avon 1960's Corvette bottle. Paid $14 total.

Now I need to go back in my previous posts and see what I haven't posted yet!

Stuff from a garage sale only a 1/4 mile from my house 2 weeks ago. Spent $45.

Pic 1: Craftsman toolboxes, the one with it's red trays on top has a cord reel and can be used as a step stool.

Pic 2: What was inside the boxes. Motorcycle tool kit wrenches for Honda and Kawasaki, Diamond adjustable wrench, New Britain screwdriver, Plomb speed handle, Wizard sockets and other miscellaneous stuff.

Pic 3: A disassembled Hamilton drafting table.

Pic 4: A photo I borrowed of what the Hamilton drafting table would look like assembled.

Pic 5: A pair of Craftsman jack stands which I immediately sold to a buddy for what I paid for them.

Private Lugnutz, the Vise Grips are welding pliers and are early because it does not have a lock release lever. The patent for that was granted July 4th, 1950.

cbacres, nice score on the Milwaukee portable bandsaw! And thanks for the wake up picture!

paulm, the Waterloo machinist box is cool, I like that green paint!

boofer, you **** on the Craftsman toolboxes with tools for $175!

Smokeshow69, that's some good finds for $45.

Still playing catchup. This was Friday, November 24th according to the pictures. Not sure what I paid, around 50 or 60 bucks? Bought almost all Craftsman that day.

Pic 1. On left side of picture Craftsman ignition and allen wrenches, in the middle is the pile of early =V= tools.

Pic 2. right in the middle of the pic, Craftsman wrenches and a plastic Craftsman carry box with most of the tools. I love these boxes with a few extra tools added to keep in my vehicles.

Pic 3. More Craftsman sockets and ratchets.

Same sale the next day for half price day. Spent about $50. Not pictured are a couple of car batteries I picked up for $5 and sold to the battery place for $20 bringing my cost down to $30.

Pics 1 and 2: More Craftsman, early =V= is in the first pic on the left. I like the late 1970's Craftsman hacksaw blade in pic 2.

Pic 3: What I really wanted, the 18 drawer hardware cabinet. It had some hardware and tools in it, files and stuff like that.

And more stuff, this was around November 22. A buddy went to look at some Mustang cars with me. He brought along some tools he wanted to sell. I didn't really want them but he dropped the price to $50 and I said OK. I didn't have it on me so later he stopped by my place and we swapped some Mustang parts for the $50 so I didn't even have to pony up cash!

Pic 1: 3/4 drive sockets and stuff, some US, some import.

Pic 2: Blowproof bellhousing for a 79-93 Mustang 5.0 with a T5 transmission

Pic 3 and 4: Some welder supplies, 2 new Norton Norzon grinding wheels, Ken tool hub puller, another ammo can.

Hmm last 2 photos won't load.

Saturdays finds, estate sale only 5 houses away from me. Spent $80.

Pic 1: Coca Cola crates, Sears propane camp grill, Schrade USA Old Timer knife, various good chemicals, double bit axe head and aluminum "cop box" that held various forms and regulations.

Pic 2: 3 milk crates, Craftsman rotary tool bit holder and a vintage Hedlund Roller Surfer #500 skateboard from the 1969s.

Pic 3: Craftsman convertible dump cart and a new in box creeper.

Pic 4: Various pieces of military gear in a local high school sports bag.

Pic 5: 2 brand new 26" bicycle tires.

Just remembered I picked up batteries here too and sold them for $16, the battery place was on the way to a friends house so no extra gas money either!

Bluebolt - I like that Hamilton drafting table...

I missed the last decent looking sales this past weekend around here, I doubt there will be any more with Christmas this coming weekend and New Years the following...

That's beautiful, bb!

My dad was a draftsman by trade. A couple years after the war (WWII) he was in the Merchant Marines on the Great Lakes again (out of Fairport Harbor, OH), then he took a job delivering mail for the Post Office, and then my mom got homesick and my grandfather got him a job at Lehigh Structural Steel in Allentown, PA. He could always draw, but blueprints for high-tension wire steel tower structures wasn't exactly his calling! Lots of his artwork split up between me and my bros.

Anyway, I have his drafting table, a Keuffel & Esser. Not from work, but home. He painted it Navy grey. (He painted everything Navy grey. Not kidding. I restored an old cathedral radio he had in one of the garages and it was also painted Navy grey!) I took it apart a few years ago, started stripping and sanding it, to eventually re-stain, and never finished. Your post has inspired me. I'm adding it to the winter projects list!

Private Lugnutz, the Vise Grips are welding pliers and are early because it does not have a lock release lever. The patent for that was granted July 4th, 1950.
Yup. Thanks. Been spending way too much time on DATAMP trying to figure that out!

Still playing catchup.
At this rate, you'll be posting December's finds in the new 2018 thread!!

Blue- thanks for the semi suckage [emoji51] I felt like I got great deals especially when you see everything in one pile ! I think I should be able to sell the palmgren Dp vise to cover my cash outlay so I will have gotten all this for $0 [emoji16]

I took drafting in high school but don't remember much of it. I am debating on keeping or selling the drafting table. Really don't have the room for it. I like it because it was made in mybhime state, Wisconsin.
