007: you've got most of your information correct because that's CRETE'S Parker 978 (not sure if that's the #, but it is an 8 inch wide jaw) and CRETE drove from South Dakota to Tuscon, Arizona to pick that vise up so he was the SHIPPING PERSON. it came with that cool stand too. that other vise he's showing looks like maybe 150 pound Vanderman #3 that might be one of the nicest and best built open screw vise made.

ALL: it is a WHITE CHRISTMAS here in the PNW today cause it snowed about 4 inches last night so hope you all stay warm and cozy and safe and enjoy your day.

Drives
Well your white Christmas is a lot more romantic and scenic than ours in W. Mich , currently we have a blizzard going on (can not even tell where the road is) and it will continue to snow through out the week! It is for sure a very white Christmas and staying warm is the operating word here :)

Very jealous of your blizzard Gman. Call me crazy but I feel like if we have to put up with the cold, you might as well through a bunch of snow at us!!

Thanks for your advice so far everyone regarding vises. A GJ member pm'd me w/ a Starrett 924 that is in excellent shape. I also received some info on a Prentiss 20 w/ rear pivot static jaw that looks interesting.

JON: both of those vises are up there in my top 20 or 30 as far as a GREAT USER and the Prentiss is also on the list as a collectible so they probably are not cheap. i don't like doing appraising or pricing much on the threads and it's impossible to say without hearing more about condition or having pictures. i will say that either of them could be a great vise, but unless you work with a lot of odd shaped items or want a cooler looking vise i'd buy the Starrett over the Prentiss as a USER.

good luck

007: GEESH that looks like the days i'd like to head to the mountains and go skiing in years gone by. at dinner last night my boys were talking about snowboarding this coming week cause we just got a ton of new snow and i haven't snowboarded for maybe 15 years and i still miss it. maybe if i get in better shape in 2018 i'll join them next year.

Just for a masterforce vise from menards. The only reason I wanted for xmas was due to the lifetime warranty. Cant beat it.

Thanks for the kind words and good wishes, bearded one.

Loydski:
Nice score. That is indeed a rare model. Too bad about the stripped main nut. What are your plans from here with that vise? I know you have welding skills. Is precision machining another of your talents?

SHIFT I had another 107 that needs more work than the one I just got so I swapped the main screw nut for now. There are some very good machinists at my work so I’m going to pick their brain and see what we can come up with.

DRIVES thanks I will check that post out!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Picked up a reed 107 on Friday it’s in very good shape compared to the other one I have! unfortunately the main screw nut is stripped out so now I need to track one of those down! But overall I’m happy with it!

Gorgeous vise! Do you mind measuring the handle length when you have a minute? Mine is missing. Thanks

This one's truly back from the dead. I got it at auction from a service station that was closing. No one else bid on it. It had angle-iron jaws welded on.

Cleaned up pretty good including new jaws from Bcom - thanks, Bcom! I could polish the handle, but it's going up on CL. I'm drowning in stuff.

Does anyone know approx what time period Prentiss stopped making vises with this style branding. Just wondering how early this one is. ef2b77787425771bab69854a339a2c25.jpg

Glad you enjoyed the sign OhBeardedOne- You would love its mates... Nice to be able to wish others of like interest a 'Merry Christmas'- tried it on a similar forum a couple of years ago and ****, my post was gone before 6am- and I didn't even say the other thing.

On another note, Small Daughter brought a young man home from school to visit for Christmas. And he sure enough left something hard and heavy under the tree for me. 4-1/2" Columbian. Pics below. What a nice young man...:)

I’d say no later then 1930. For the graffiti style prentiss logo. I believe they started the style around 1915. Generally it seems prentiss vises are older then most brands on average in my opinion.

Unknown vise on local Craigslist. Looks like a Columbian, but the only markings I see are "NED" over "TP" on the main casting. The jaws are smooth and do not have attaching screws that I can see. The shape of the castings and the knob of the screw say Columbian to me. Perhaps it was made for a customer to rebrand?

Like I'm sure many of you do also, I have an Ebay "vise/vice" saved search set up with all the vintage vise companies. Every other day or so I can easily check out just the new postings that match my description and when I see something interesting I can add it to my watch page.

What has amazed me as of late is how crazy these rotating Parkers are going for. These are both sold auctions this month. Makes me wonder how rare they actually are and how many vise gurus on here have one in their collection.03f1707d6609c177d4debaa187a9635c.jpgd6d5ced850ea04e99a75cc565fa0b36a.jpg

Super nice! If you are not already an army man then you should have been as you seem to know formations well and already have yourself a well organized army of vises (I hear vises make the best soldiers)

Seriously, how the heck did you end up getting four of them?:headscrat

Don’t buy it.
You can buy a new one at harbor freight for $65
When it breaks, they will give you a new one.

Better to spend your money on a quality USA vise from Craigslist or from a GJ member.

Welcome to GJ! That is indeed a “ruggedly handsome” vise .
Now many here probably started their vise addiction with a more modest vise but since your are starting with a high end vise already you have set a high bar for yourself and should end up with quite a collection

Wow, more impressive vises and again in sets of 4. There must be some significance to the number 4 (I must have missed that part in the Bible, numbers 2,3,6,7,10,12,40 I know about but not number 4) :dunno: :)

By the way since all the vises are so neatly organized do you mind moving the middle shelf concrete partition about 2" to left as it is not quite aligned to the partition below and is hurting me eyes (just because everything is so perfectly lined up) :lol_hitti

But seriously, man, on every shelf you have a very high quality collection

Thank you! Yes I definitely would call it in addiction. I should be clear this is not my first vice I have two others I have a Bessie 3 1/2 inch and a 4 inch scout that I started off with and I quickly realized that they were kind of vices That my sister would use lol I am new to garage journal though. 1ec16e8559c24e777c1e506dfa028537.jpg
