Got my Christmas present a couple of days ago...72" Husky Mobile Workbench

Some background...

Santa LTL dropped off my 72" Husky workbench 2 days ago. It is from their new line. I was looking hard at one of the 60" workbench's (Milwaukee & Husky) with the metal pegboard, but I really didn't like the drawer layouts, I felt both of them gave up too much space to deep drawers and they both have the left side cabinet that I don't need.

I then looked hard at the 66" Husky, but I was concerned about the large drawer only having one set of drawer rails. I know it has the center support, but it wasn't enough to alleviate my concern.

I really liked the drawer layout of the 72" and the large top drawer features 2 sets of slides per side for a 200lb weight capacity. The top drawer is 5" deep, a little deeper than is probably necessary, but I should have no issue with deep sockets on whatever rail system I end up using. The three deep drawers on the bottom also feature 2 sets of slides for 200lbs of contents.

Husky offers two different versions of the 72", adjustable height top and a solid top. The adjustable height version is constructed with 19 gauge steel vs 21 gauge for the solid top. Another difference is the adjustable height version features soft close drawer slides while the solid top does not. The adjustable is available in Husky's flat black theme while the solid top features gloss black body with chrome trim. Both versions come with drawer liners.

I'm not a professional mechanic, nor do I pretend to be a very good amateur mechanic. I have accumulated a lot of tools over the years. I do a lot of home DIY and enjoy restoring cast iron, old vintage tools, Coleman lanterns and a big honey-do list. I've been working for a while now on putting together 8 basic tool sets comprised of good old American made tools that I am going to give to each of my grandchildren. This requires a lot of space to do and I was running out of room in my two 26" stacks. This lead me to get a box that I could use to store "my" tools and have a nice size work surface while being able to dedicate at least one of the 26" boxes to my grandkid tool project.

Because the box was not going to be used every day sometimes, I didn't feel like the $200 premium for the adjustable top box was worth it for me. I am short (5'6") and a bench that adjusts higher really holds no appeal to me. So I went with the lower cost ($898) box.

I had a 10% off coupon so the price was $808.00. I paid $85 for threshold delivery (they put it in my garage).

It took 6 business days for it to arrive at my house.

When the driver backed into the driveway today, I asked him if the box was undamaged. He said, "It has a hole in it, not sure if the box is damaged or not". The driver was great, he used a pallet jack and lift gate to get it down on the ground where we both looked at the hole. There was a very clear small shallow dent in the back of the box. The packaging was such that it was easy to unpack the box and inspect it.

Upon closer inspection, the dent in the back did not do any further damage to the box. All the drawers worked perfectly. I still wasn't sure I'd sign for it when the driver said to call Home Depot and ask if they could do anything for me. I called the HD.COM and after a brief hold was connected to a customer service rep. I have to say, the rep was pleasant to deal with. I told him I was thinking about rejecting the box and having them reship me a new one or was there anything they could do to get me to keep it. After some back and forth negotiation, they took another $107 off the box and credited it to me immediately...it cleared and showed on my account before I hung up with the guy. So I ended up paying $700 for the box.

i-sfQ6dS2-L.jpg

The box comes on a pallet with the wheels already installed. The pallet was constructed with bolts holding it together which were no match for an M12 impact driver with 6mm hex bit. I had the box on the floor in no time.

I'm really impressed with this box. I've already started moving tools over. I've got all my sockets and a few other things in the top drawer and it slides like it's empty. I am going to mount a Craftsman 5196 on it and build a hutch using the wall control metal pegboard in gloss black. I'll hang a computer monitor and a low profile shop light in the hutch.

The box is 72" x 24" x 37.7" high. All of the drawers are 21.8" deep.

The large top drawer is 51" wide by 21.8" Deep by 5.1" high.

There are 2 rows of 2" deep drawers, 2 rows of 3" deep drawers, and 1 row of 8.3" deep drawers. The narrow drawers are 16" Wide and the wide drawers in the middle are 33.5" wide.

On the top left side, next to the large drawer, there is a 2" and 3" deep drawer that are 16" wide.

Dang dude, get rid of half the redundant tools and you could use a box half the size ! Otherwise, nice box for a nice price.

Thanks for the detailed review and pictures.

That's a great box for the price. I would live with a dent in the back with a $100 discount too. It would be on my wish list if I were to upgrade. I like the drawer layout and dual slides on the top drawer. They should have put dual slides on the 66" Husky too.

Sweet, $700 for a 72" box is pretty much outright theft!
Very impressed with your negotiation skills and HD service reps making a good decision for both parties.
We need more pictures, of course, mostly because I am wondering what tools you are going to place in the smaller drawers on the left side.

I'm still figuring that out

I'm building toolsets for my grandkids...a lot of that redundancy will go to them.

New member here, been lurking for a while and pulled the trigger on this box today. If you do not mind me asking, where can I find the HD 10% Off Coupon?

Will post up pictures once I receive it.

My wife came up with it, I don't know where she got it. I suspect they mailed it to us. She's currently asleep in bed with bronchitis and pneumonia, not going to wake her up to ask her.

If you are military or ex-military, you can get a 10% discount at HD or Lowes.

Nah, don’t wake her. I just thought it would be something found easily online. I wish they had this in the stores so you could see it before buying. I was going to get the Harbor Freight 72” tomorrow because this one wa out of stock for a while and HD did not know when they would get more. It popped up today as available so I placed the order to be shipped to my local store. I prefer the drawer layout if this one over the HF and the fact that it is 2” deeper.

As somebody with the Husky 66" box. You ****!! I love my box just wish they had double drawer slides like yours does.

I looked really hard at the Husky 66", it was the double slides on the 72" that most influenced my decision to go with it.

Great review! One question, do the drawers just have detents to keep them closed or do they have any kind of positive latches? How strong are they, especially with that loaded top drawer?

The drawers do not have any type of positive latch, I guess a detent system would be the proper description of what they use. When you push them closed, the last 3/4" or so requires a slightly stronger push. I haven't had any issue with them coming open.

I am not moving the box around, its stationary in my garage so I can't speak to them staying closed when loaded and rolling.

Are you asking how strong the latching is on the top drawer, or just how strong is the top drawer in general?

Seems like the perfect box for the OP's needs. Congratulations! I really like the 5"deep top drawer. The overall drawer configuration, actually, seems efficient.

I think that sometimes folks forget, myself included, about the intended application and concentrate on the overall quality of the toolbox. Using myself an as example, I bought a pair of light duty, inexpensive, homeowner 5-drawer 41" boxes a few months back. Their sole function is to remain in place and to house microfiber towels and foam buffing pads. Figure, 10-15lbs/drawer. They're working out really well.

Exactly!

Is this a High-Quality Heavy Duty box? No. But it's a very nice quality box that didn't cost a fortune and meets my needs perfectly.

I am sure you've already done it but please sand the dent and make sure there's no rust. Paint with rustoleum black to preserve. You can body fill it if you're **** and want to blend but mostly just make sure it doesn't rust...that would be sad.

Thank you for the advice. I hadn't thought about doing that but I will now.

You are lucky to have them. The Milwaukee does not have them. I tried to find out if I could substitute (buy the Husky) and install it on the Milwaukee but I have not gotten a response.

Thanks for the info. I cannot find a HD Coupon online so I guess I will stick with its original price. It is cheaper than the Harbor Freight 72” that I was going to get originally, so I guess I am ahead of the game.

Any tips you can offer as far as unpackaging. I had mine shipped to the local Home Depot. It is only about 5 miles away and I have a utility trailer to transport it. At over 400 lbs, hope the casters work well.

Got the shipping notification yesterday, it will be at the local store on 2/5.

I had mine delivered to the home. Driver used a lift gate and pallet jack to put it in the garage. It was easy to unbox. The box will be sitting on a pallet that is held together with bolts. I just removed the bolts and the pallet came apart easily.

I think your biggest challenge will be getting it on and off the trailer.

Went to the local store today to pick up my box. Pretty uneventful, HD loaded it on my trailer with a forklift. When we got it home, we took the packaging off, disassembled the pallet and rolled it down the gate off the trailer. Arrived in good shape, did not find any damage. This is a great alternative to the 72” Harbor Freight Box. It has more shallow drawers than the HF which I prefer and this one is 24” deep rather than 22. Pleased with my purchase so far. I tried attaching a couple of pictures but they came in upside down and I cannot figure out how to flip them.

decent usable home box with sensible features and decent drawer layout helped by the 24" box depth. prefer the look of the gloss and chrome trim over the newer matte finish boxes.
Think I would print or buy some sort of appropriate sticker help finish that dent after smoothing it with bondo.

I've got the "tall" Husky 2-piece tool box. I'm not sure of the measurements (52"?). It looks like the one in the original post - same color, style of drawers, etc. I love it. The drawers open and close and tools fit in it! And did I mention that tools fit in it?? I could put a Snap-On emblem on it and impress my mechanic friends as well as increase the size of my peter.

how does this compare to say the HF 72", quality, sturdiness wise?

I like the drawer layout better on the Husky, and the lack of those stupid HF latches, its also deeper. Would probably get adjustable top just for the thicker steel.

I just recently looked at both.

They seem really comparable. As a guy who has made his living turning wrenches for 30 years...I love a box with more shallow drawers than deep. **** tends to get lost/buried in the deep drawers.

The Husky box is 24" deep. Another small advantage.

I'm actually looking to purchase two of the fixed height boxes and use them to construct built in cabinets along one wall of my garage. I have right at 150" and two boxes would fit perfect. Toss the casters, build bases with toe kicks, add a custom full length top....

+1 on those points, 24" depth pretty decent and makes laying out tools more flexible/efficient and plenty shallower drawers keeps mechanic type tools easy to access .
Husky boxes work pretty good for static and lighter use. fair few do use them in daily pro environment and will do the job for right minded user .

Was at the Subaru dealer this morning and in the service department was one of the flat black Husky boxes (60" I'm guessing) in what appeared to be the bay where they do basic maintenance (oil and filter changes, tire rotations, etc.). Don't know how old it was but it looked to be in excellent shape. The goobers working in there weren't the most careful with their tools, either. One was spinning a long 1/2"-drive ratchet around by the socket and it ended up falling to the floor.
