MAN!; you guys are killing it!

Pretty dead here! I got to an estate sale yesterday, and not a tool in sight!

Some garage related, but over all, a mixed bag...

These people apparently were into their coffee and Tea, as they ahd a lot of related stuff. One of these Turkish coffee pots "Cevrze" is the real name, caught my eye, the other tow caught SWMBO's eye. the teapot, (I think that one is purely decorative, as the spout got knocked loose and looks like lead solder...)

The aluminium funnel and I think the other is a tea strainer will go into my shop. been times could have used a "funnel" like that...

attachment.php

Brass bud vase, some glass knobs. I think these are from a faucet, the spline on the big one matches, and the long shaft on the smaller could have been a drain actuator... And a bronze sleeve bearing for the "stock pile"

attachment.php

A NOS cruise control; seems to have all the parts, but man they made some of the bracketry klugey! If I can get it so it connects well on the linkage I'll probably put this on the DD Rig, (not sure a samurai ever came with a CC)

attachment.php

Lastly two small plane pre-flight inspection "Steps" Now I have three and still have not come up with a good reuse, for these...

$15 all!

ALL: maybe part of the reason i'm having to empty one of my 20x20 storage units is i just can't easily pass up a good deal. i went to pick up a few pieces of FREE LUMBER that weren't what i needed and i had to ask if they had any old tools or stuff to sell.

here's what i found in their carport's shed that ended up following me home. i'm on the run and i'll take more pictures (and put them right side up) if anybody has questions just ask.

I probably didn't need any of this, but now that all my kids are homeowners or will be soon i'm sure a care package will find it's way to their garage soon after they move in.

cheers

drives, cool licence plates. did they tell you anything about them car/country?

There were only two sales out there today, but I made them count!

Started with the estate sale that had a Craftsman tool chest listed- the chest turned out to be modern and bottom of the line, but inside?
I found my first Plomb wrench, plus an extension! And my first Barcalo! Also Craftsman nut drivers screwdrivers and wrenches, a punch down tool, some S-K wrenches, one Snap-On wrench, Midwest magnesium snips, a MAC punch, KD pliers and a couple of pocket knives. Left the toolbox, took the tools.
The garage had a few consumables I always grab- zip ties, storage hooks and a twist lock extension cord. Also got a set of drawer slides, cheap magnetic socket tray, a small tripod and a single mag molle pouch.

After that I figured I swing by the other sale- not expecting much since it was day 2 of a 3 day sale. It should have been picked clean, but.....
Walked in the door to see a full box of Craftsman tools just sitting in the kitchen! Almost a full set of metric and sae wrenches and sockets- no ratchets though. Plus a tape measure, some pry bars, pliers and other bits. I headed to the basement to find a Prentiss Bulldog 264 swivel vise bolted to the workbench- I walked right back upstairs, bought the box of Craftsman and used the wrenches to liberate the vise. I poked around some more in the basement finding a Craftsman staple gun, some saw blades, Crescent pliers and another old wrench or two.
Plus- in a coffee can I found a few super rusty sockets with familiar shapes- a handful of Snap On, some S-K and some MAC. Now I have projects for the Tool Polishing thread!

I'm glad I took the time to make that second stop- just goes to show that you never know what you can find!

Like you said, second stop turned out pretty good. Your first Plomb wrench huh......well, not sure I want to congratulate you because now you'll want to complete the set and that will take time to say the least.

That Bulldog vise is a great find! So what did you pay for all the treasures? You did not include your costs......no costs posted equal no opportunity for a "you ****".

Welcome to GJ.

Another good weekend for me, and now I have workbench space to show and tell with.

First the GF texted me on Friday about an estate sale she stopped by at. She had already pulled out all the USA pliers and a bunch of SK lectrolite wrenches and asked me if the P&C set was good, I asked her what was inside and she said it was BE craftsman! All but 1 socket is non BE and the set was $10 and the rest of the tools were $5.

Then today I went to another estate sale and picked up the early =V= craftsman ratchet, Nicholson USA files including a chisel/file combo, a bunch of wrenches, a craftsman BE 1/4" breaker bar, and a stanley handyman plane all for $9

The second estate sale was a private one where they were doing 50% off. Thats where i got the adjustable wrenches, serpentine belt pulley wrench, proto phillips screwdriver and fuller robertson screwdrivers, 1 gal gas can, craftsman allen keys, hammer, and a penens 1/2" speed handle all for $6.

Then sitting in the backyard was this beauty that was originally $30 and was now $15, a Craftsman heritage logo cantilever tool box. Amazing piece to me.

Overall I spent $45 on the entire thing plus a $2 slushy for finding the box :rocker:

$15 all!

Some casters and a tractor seat and you'd have a nice shop scoot.

My first purchase in a long time. With a 2 and half year old and 9 month old, there is little time to get away.

It's the not the best drill press, but I'm with it for $40. It looks like it's only need used a handful of times and he threw in sanding drums. 46c5d5a1c1f6ff437b4599c34bcc6880.jpgdd9dd660f4c6f45b510699a0e143b018.jpg1dadc63d8dfcd770da06b8700713fe9f.jpg

I forgot the funniest part. There was a man running around the market asking vendors if they had any tennis balls.

A little while later I caught up with the guy. He was doing a good deed for an elderly couple installing two tennis balls on the bottom of the husband’s walker so it didn’t scrape the floor. Guess what, the elderly man’s wife complained the two balls didn’t match. We all had a good laugh.

Outlaw how tall are those steps? They look cool.

Corndoggeh nice P&C and Craftsman boxes.

Thanks KZ! I was pretty psyched to see the Plomb- I'd let one go last year because the seller wanted way too much for the pile or wrenches I'd gathered. I really do like the logo and design of those- so I think you're right... I need more!!

The costs? As a FNG here on the board I'm not sure what 'policy' is with that- I do flip my fair share of finds to fund the hobby so I don't want to shoot myself in the foot there. They were asking $40 on the vise, but told me I could have it for $20 if I removed it myself. I did my best to not *run* down the stairs after it.....

Shadow & CF: yep those German plates are what caught my eye and started the pile and then it was in full CLEAN OUT MODE. I asked the grandson if he wanted to keep the license plates of his gramp's car and he said NO a couple times. The owners are 90 and were moving to a rest home. they either came from Germany during WWII or just after and they'd been living in this house with a view to die for the last 40 years. sorry i forgot to snap a picture of the view, but imagine sitting on a cliff a few hundred feet above maybe one of the great lakes and seeing islands and mountains on the other side.

ALL: I don't need more MOLE TRAPS, but finding 3 maybe vintage ones still in their original box was interesting and i picked up the Coleman lantern JUST BECAUSE somebody on here seems to like them a lot. check out my Drivesitfar's WTF thread in Vintage tools for some of the cool things in the boxes like a SWEDISH hand warmer about the size of a coffee cup for one.

as some of you know i'm trying to eliminate one of my 20x20 storage units and FSD (flat surface disease), but these little distractions are fun and what some of us like to do cause we can shop and it's not going to break the bank.

cheers all and great finds for JANUARY!!

I could be wrong, but you're all new to (or at least not long time regulars on) this thread. It's great to see an infusion of new pickers! I'm looking forward to learning more about you through your finds. Truth be told, that's always been the draw for me. My M.O. and my preferences are proclaimed in my signature block, but even if they weren't, it wouldn't take anyone very long to figure me out by the stuff I come home from flea markets with, or the stuff I tend to comment on, or the side-stories I tell. And it's the same for all the others. So, welcome to the Garage Sale thread! And happy picking!

Thanks for checking in, Corndoggeh! That's one name I can scratch off my list.

EDIT: I may have missed them, but unless I'm mistaken, I'm still hoping and waiting for some of my favorite and so far absentee pickers to check in!

Hey.I'm here and reading very often.Work has been busy, picking has been non-existant.You'd think with Rickster moving to PA it would open things up ,but frankly I just have not had the time/nor the space.I did just sell a big Kennedy box and tools so the shop has a bit more room. Thanks for thinking of me ,know I am alive and well

Cool find, Macduf. Never heard of Blue Island. Is that a U.S. dime on that box?!! Maybe it's a Lilliputian pipe threader! :)

She had already pulled out all the USA pliers and a bunch of SK lectrolite wrenches and asked me if the P&C set was good
She has a good eye! I don't see much of it out here, but I love the P&C decals. Somebody else - probably one of the Pacific NW'erners on the thread - found that same or similar box late last year as I recall with the same or similar decal. It's a striking design.

You're probably right. May we all be around 25 or so years from now to find out! :)

Guess what, the elderly man’s wife complained the two balls didn’t match. We all had a good laugh.
It does sound like something out of a Seinfeld episode.

As a FNG here on the board I'm not sure what 'policy' is with that -
There is no board policy. There is no thread policy, either, if you're wondering. It's certainly not mandatory to reveal what you paid, and there are many ways to get interest, approval, admiration, and congratulations (including a "You ****!") other than reporting a bargain price. Sometimes a single tool or a whole haul is so good, price is irrelevant. Here what I said on the subject in the Intro...

As always, How much? is encouraged, too. Personally, I am more impressed by the quality of a find rather than the difference between its actual value and its purchase price, but everyone loves to hear about bargains and figurative “steals”. Or not. You can keep that to yourself if you want. (Your 2018 Thread Host always does!)

19" (big step up!)
I was thinking you could wrap some burlap around the legs and step and it would make a nice rifle rest, but that's an odd height, in between prone and kneeling.

We might need a ruling on this! In the past I've posted "found by the road" item in the Annual GS Thread with no complaints. With a new skipper on this thread the rules might have changed.

Anyway - I saw this crumpled by the side of the highway yesterday morning and thought "I'll have to come back for that later". On the way to a family dinner I stopped and grabbed it.

It's a double sided "WIDE LOAD" / "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign that appears to have fallen off a truck. It has a "Made in China" tag on it and will become wall art in the garage.

Cheers

Jim

Nope. Found for free on the road, on the curb, or in a ravine in the woods, or anywhere else for that matter, will always be appropriate! :)

I could have some fun with those.

The only thing I have to report falls in the LEFT BEHIND category. Nifty little NU-WAY STOVE CO. heater. Guy wanted $40, told me he paid $35. I hate when vendors do that. First of all, I never believe them Secondly, it cuts off all haggling. Thirdly, I want to say, "it's a flea market, buddy, not fleaBay or your bric-a-brac antiques shop." This guy in particular always brings his picks from other places and wants top dollar for them. Pfffft.

Drives, The Coleman lantern is probably a model 220 at a guess. What letter follows the Model No; and what is the date code on the bottom?

What's more interesting to me is the funnel in it's original box. While not rare, even in boxes, they do bring a decent price when boxed, sometimes about what the more common lanterns (like the 220) bring in average condition.

With the box in that condition, and the funnel box looking like it's also near new, has the lanterns been lit? I have a few unlit/NOS lanterns and those bring a premium.

Other than brakes or tires, I don't do a lot of sitting while working on cars/rigs, and for that it would be a bit high.

I was thinking you could wrap some burlap around the legs and step and it would make a nice rifle rest, but that's an odd height, in between prone and kneeling.

Great minds! I already sat and tried to decide if it would work for that. As you said, a bit short. Possibly with a saddle/riser added? Hmmm... I shoot/hunt with handguns generally, so that could have possibilities.

Outlaw: thanks for the 411 on the Coleman.

i'll post more pictures here or on my vintage thread. my bride's idea of camping is a hotel with no room service and i'm not a hunter (picker yes) so i'll probably move this down the road so i can maybe GET ORGANIZED.

i like your chairs/stools/stands too and wonder if they are stout enough to hold up a car or truck frame cause they do have the COOL LOOK?

Jim: yep I agree FREE is free wherever you get/find your stuff. i have a vintage wood one like that sitting out alongside my shop that i probably should pull in out of the rain so it doesn't rot before i find a good spot for it. thanks for the reminder.

ALL: enjoy your SUNDAY PICKING ADVENTURES or just smell the roses while you stay warm if you are in the frozen part of the world. i had time to straighten one picture. if any of you might want to see what's in the boxes before i stuff these away just ask. there is a SWEDISH MADE HANDWARMER in there somewhere that i will post on my vintage tools thread that i'm not sure how to use or if it works, but as you know it's easier to own it and try to figure it out than leave it behind.

Drives the steps are aluminum, so no go on car stands. Possibly display stands if the item is light enough. I would say these could possibly get overloaded if the guy standing on it was too heavy...

Went to a sale this morning because I seen vices in his post on cl. Some other guy beat me there and bought 4 vices for 15 bucks
I bought this thing for 5 just to buy something. It is a weird clamp / vice. The handle has teeth on it so you have to press the lever to be able to turn it out.

Someone say Free Lumber??? I went dumpster diving at a couple new homes in the area and managed to scavenge all this in a couple trips. Lots of 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x12's and a couple cut sheets of OSB... Some had nails in them (temp bracing), some were partially cut, most had rough edges (lumber yard won't take them back).

Loaded up my truck with it as you can see and hauled it down to help a friend's brother out that was trying to fix up his house (used to be their grandparents). After loading the lumber I had a cabinet I refinished to put on top and a few other things, it was a full load for sure.

Next home that gets built I'm saving those scraps to build me a shed when the weather warms up some.

ALL: maybe part of the reason i'm having to empty one of my 20x20 storage units is i just can't easily pass up a good deal. i went to pick up a few pieces of FREE LUMBER that weren't what i needed and i had to ask if they had any old tools or stuff to sell.

It moves back and forth pretty well without any hang ups. As for its use I am clueless for now.

Jason, I built my shed with about 1/3 to 1/2 recycled/saved/Yardsale materials. Would have been even higher if the Garage door company I had a deal with for old garage doors had come through!

All the foundation blocks, the entirety of the floor structure including the 3/4" ply, a quarter to a third or so of the framing ALL the roof ply, over 1/2 the roof shingles, All the gutter, the window, the double doors (sold core house front doors with glass)...

It's a Coleman catalytic heater. Works similar to the "sunflower" heaters that clamp onto the top of a 20# propane tank. See attached:

I've seen the propane units before, but never an old Coleman like this with attached gas tank (looks similar to the single burner stoves and lanterns).

That being said, the link you posted shows one of these right at the top of the page, then goes on to say they are safe to use in enclosed spaces. Maybe the propane ones are, but I wouldn't want to do that with one of these!

Hey Outlaw, know anything about these? This popped up for sale locally on Letgo, don't recall ever seeing one before.

Yep similar to the propane, however, they are NOT pressurized, it does use Coleman fuel/white gas, and has a wick to feed the catalytic element. The burn concept is closer to the old Jon-E hand warmers than the propane units.

Caution: there is a dome cover for the catalytic element. if it is missing you cannot "turn it off" the dome cover smothers the catalytic element to stop the burn... I see then missing from time to time...

Startup is you drizzle the Catalytic element with a measured amount of fuel, and then light it. it will burn with a flame, then die down and the catalytic element glows/heats.

I would NOT use a burning anything in an enclosed space without good ventilation...

I got this McCrosky Drafting Light and Dominion Fan for the shop at an Estate Sale. I got them both for $8.

Now if that fan doesn't shoot sparks and smoke when you plug it in and turn it on I nominate you for a "You ****!". We will need a second for the motion . . .

Around here that fan would go for $50 - $75 in beater condition and more for nice condition. $8 is a steal.

Technically $4 since he got both for eight! I'd definitely call that a USUCK

I would strongly recommend inspecting/replacing the cords on both as needed! Check the interior wires also...
