So my Dad bought this 48' Raven Semi trailer in 2003-04 when scrap and aluminum prices were up. lucky for us we had a friend that owned a scrap yard and bought this before it was cut up. The trailer was completely stripped down of all steels and sold as clean aluminum. So Dad Rigged up a hay wagon to it and drug it home. It has been sitting till time to start this project. He wants a 30' dual tandem Goose-neck trailer. and told me i can have whats left so 18ft car-hauler it is.

Just curious about the design, I saw you notched for the tires, is that going back as just a flat plate again or under fenders?

Also I saw that you cut the big "I beams" in half across the web into a "T" shape. Are you going back with the flanges or is it so heavy that none are needed? It seems like it might be the latter but working against the structure, there are big notches for the cross-channel which seem to weaken it.

Just curious about those issues and your path thru them :)

Yea it will be 102" wide with drive over fenders made from 1/2" aluminum plate the tires are 235/75/16 on ford aluminum Alcoa wheels
i had to cu the side of the frame and the beams to get the trailer as low as possible i am planning on going back and finishing out the bottom of the beam once i get the axles placed and setup i plan on trying to close up most of the holes where the channels are however the hole where the c channel is going thru the beams they are 1 piece the places that they are not are 3 separate pieces if you click on this link this trailer that Gas monkey garage has in very similar to what i am building but also i am coping my Goose-neck that i currently have 20141011_1735321_zpse98899e3.jpg

One thing you should be aware of, the steel directly to aluminum will corrode like crazy. I would put something between the parts, you could use wood, but I would use delrin, nylon, or even electrical tape. I have always wanted to cut down an aluminum semi trailer, so this is cool to see.

yea i will most likely be using a thin polymer to separate the two i have done a lot of digging to find what to use because of the the 2 dissimilar metals

I just pulled apart an aluminum trailer that had been repaired in early 2017 with steel, it was awful. This looks like a fun project and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Aluminum would be my choice for a trailer. You are doing a great job! It always impresses the hell out of me what guys like you can do with different metals. A skill one day I might have the time to learn even if it is a only a mere fraction of what I see on the GJ. I’m going to watch this thread as I am sure I won’t be only one.

yes if i get the chance i will take some pic of the parts that have already suffered this process

thanks I just got done with welding school, and i have learned a lot about welding aluminum but I always love learning new things
Very interesting build. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Kev
thanks

Very Cool Project!
thanks
Did you consider making it tilt?
Yes and personally I don't like tilt trailers so much mainly because if you have to load more than 1 thing its a pain. I am mainly building this for my lawnmower as it has a 72" deck on it and wont ft on anything but my goose-neck trailer. And Well its cool lol

I did an Alloy deck/ Steel frame trailer build thread on the GJ.

The glue to use is Bostik [or Simson] ISR 70-03.

available here:
https://www.ellsworth.com/products/...yl-modified-polymer-sealant-gray-290-ml-tube/
It needs 12 hours to dry but continually cures over a couple of weeks.

You need to be careful not to squeeze the glue out from in between the materials.
A normal trick is to use dabs of double-back tape or little 1" pieces of line trimmer string to keep the 2 materials apart while the glue is curing.

This **** is the Best there is. [and cheap]

Awesome project! I was looking at making a tilt trailer, googled it, and that’s how I got on Garage Journal!

Yep, galvanic corrosion.....materials science 101....the closer two items are on the chart, the less they corrode, the further away they are from each other, the more likely they are to corrode. Check out figure 2: http://www.ssina.com/corrosion/galvanic.html

BMS5-45 or BMS5-95 are aerospace grade sealants that I use at work all of the time. They are what we use at Boeing to solve the galvanic issue. Boeing sells expired sealant occasionally on eBay or their company ran surplus page. If you can, I would choose that over anything else every day of the week.

Those sealants and chromate primers, get them from Rodda or Sherwin Williams, will protect your metals from each other.

Nice job, is the pintle hitch so nobody will borrow it?
Somewhat the trailer Store I bought it from said i need to have a heavy hitch than my Axles but i can change it to 2 5/16 later but for now no one can borrow it
I really like that design. It's like a mini deckover.
i didn't want it that high but i was not totally against it

So i got the Taillights installed not wired up yet. Got a Small toolbox for straps and jack in and finished up the jack so it can be removed once hooked to the trailer
