I find as I upgrade my tooling, the duplicates get thrown to the bottom drawer. Then once a year I donate the spare tools to the local highschool shop class.

I much prefer donating them to a good cause than trying to wheel n deal with the general public.

If it were me, I would donate them to Goodwill or some other charitable place. They will give you a donation ticket stating what was donated and what it was worth. That way you can deduct the donation from your income tax. You may find the deduction is worth more than cleaning up the tools and trying to sell them.

Couple of points in James-W post that need clarification. I believe that the charitable organizations can not put a value on your donation per the IRS rules. Unless you have a lot of other deductions it is going to be harder to get over the standard deduction. 24k for a married couple. So it maybe better to clean them up and sell them. just saying.

Did the IRS change the rules on that? We have not donated anything for some time now, but it used to be they would give you a donation ticket stating what was donated along with a price as to what the items were worth.

In the past we have always itemized, but now with the new tax laws I am not sure just what that will do for us. In the past we have benefited more by making donations than by trying to sell stuff, maybe now we will have to re-think that option.

Just thought I would show everyone what a little Evapo Rust and some time can do.

I am posting the after pix because the before pix are already on here.

I am about 25% done with the pile I have.

it does not have to be pretty to work. I have several old and ugly tools that will work circles around some of my new, hi-tech, pretty tools. Also, if you scratch it, you wont be upset.
I say go through a put a set together of the best brands to keep for yourself. Sell the extras, cheap-o's, and oddballs.

I am a tool addict, and sentimental, so I would clean them all up, organize them, and be proud to use them and remember the great man I inherited them from.

I just went through my extras and spares and put together a good basic tool set for my nephew " i don't have kids, just dogs". Nothing high-end or fancy, just simple and well made stuff like vise grips, channel locks, cresent wrenches, vise grip brand water pump plier set, 1'' insert screwdriver bits and a ratcheting driver, plus a purchased him a full set of Kobalt ratchets, sockets, and wrenches in a tool box that organizes them. Got the set for $100 on sale at lowes. Was a black friday sale, but I got it the week before the crazyness started.

My late dad left me his tools and I use them whenever I can. Just feels right. Hope to be able to leave them to my son.
