spent the evening disassembling and polishing bicycle parts for my new to me 45 year old road bike...
Campagnola shifters. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
State of the art when I was a kid, and a few years after that.

yep, it's an old Colnago that I'm restoring....frame went to the painter and parts are all being cleaned and polished.
Hoping to have the frame back next week and can start putting her back together....

Because of our wonderful Congress I had a little free time today. So, I first fixed the broken stud on my head, welded on a nut:

Then did some assembly of the bike, I got the panniers, both fenders and the fairing on, then set the side panels and seats on to see how it will look.

I need to work on the tank, assemble it with new parts and put the roundels on. Then the rest of the bike with new brakes, all new fluids, plugs and a tune.

Bike is looking sick Jim. I'll bet you can't wait to take her for a spin.

Let me see. Sold off top 42” chest, paid off the GF 20% of what I owed her. Bid on a job for next week with hopes it goes 4-6 weeks of days, oil/filter change on the little black hot rod in case I get this job.

Now to find a block heater cord as this car doesn’t have one at all, then an oil change on the gf’s car.

Pack up my camp bag later.

Thanks Mike. I am definitely looking forward to a ride. I only rode it once before taking it apart. It was a pig. Very heavy, especially at low speeds. The tires were low too. I removed over 60 pounds of stuff from it, and added a narrower front tire in hopes of making the steering more acceptable. In the end, it is a project bike that is 90% likely to be sold in the spring.

Either way Jim, project bike to be sold or kept, building them is the fun part. Almost as fun as riding.

Years ago I bought a Franz Kuhlmann pantograph miiling/engraving/copy machine. I had intended to use this top of the line engraving machine to cut names into dipstick knobs and lids for coolant, ATF and oil. Life gets in the way of some of the best made plans, sometimes. I spent part of the day in the shop locating all of the bits and pieces and dedicated tooling for this machine. If I remember, there are about 6 sets of New Hermes brass fonts for this machine. I also have a small jeweller's engraving pantograph from Franz Kuhlmann, complete with Old German fonts and punctuation.
I am sorry to see this stuff go, but I need to narrow my focus for the things that matter the most, to me. These things are old engines and old IHC trucks.

So, with some reluctance and much regret, I posted this stuff on our local Craigslist.
Worst case scenario, I can put it in my section of the basement and let it all collect dust.

Took the tractor/snowblower out of the garage early this morning to clear the 8" of snow / ice pellets / freezing rain we got last night.

on my 3rd pass down the driveway...BANG !

Uh-Oh...didn't sound good...engine running on 1 cylinder...I slowly backed it into the garage...turned up the thermostat and let the snow thaw off the machine...went back an hour later...pretty sure a connecting rod let go in my V-Twin...partially ventilated the block.

Called the local power equipment dealer and ordered a replacement...should be here tomorrow...once I get the machine back up & running I will tear into the failed engine to find out exactly what happened.

Sure is nice having a warm dry place to work in when the weather outside is the sh*ts.

I bet if you contacted some local gunsmiths there would be great interest in that. It is a super nice setup.

I watched a You Tube video about cutting oil filters open for comparison. This mechanic showed that Fram was not in the same build quality as WIX and NAPA GOLD. The WIX had more than double the amount of filter paper and a better spring loaded by-pass valve. He suggested that WIX make NAPA GOLD. The internal bits and pieces appeared to be the same. I, at this time, do not know what Mister LUBE drive-thru use on my 24 valve Cummins. I am going to NAPA to buy a half dozen NAPA GOLD for my truck and bring the NAPA GOLD with me at the next oil change.
Back in the 1970s, I went to an evening tech session on Porsche 911 service and oil changes. The Porsche mechanic had a 911 and FRAM for the 911 cut open for comparison. They were the same. The tech guy had other filters cut open for comparison. I do not remember any of the other brands, 30 years later. After that I only bought filters from the Porsche parts.
I am guessing that few things stay the same over a few decades.

Thanks for the tip. I want to see how the ad works first. Maybe one of then will call. I may make "that call".
If I cannot sell this pantograph for a reasonable amount, I know a struggling artist who would appreciate having the machine and I will give it to her for her studio.
BTW. this machine feels like top GERMAN quality. I have wanted one of these for decades but I could not justify the nearly $10k they cost years ago.

After about a year of nagging I finally broke down over the weekend and pulled the wheels off my wife's honda civic, sanded down the rims and gave them 2 coats of rustoleum semi gloss black, and did the same thing for the flaking paint on the plastic hub caps. After a wash job and some detailing spray it almost looks brand new for 2010!

In regards to the filter conversation though. I have a 2004 powerstroke and I went back and forth between wix, fram, and sometimes Motorcraft. Where I currently work at we get a pretty good discount for napa gold filters and up until this one day I'd used them and never had a problem. I went to change the fuel filters right before winter like I had always done, and used the same filter (3899) got about 100 yards from the shop and noticed that the truck wasnt running right. Pulled it back in and put the old fuel filter back in until I could get a replacement. Looked at the napa filter and I couldnt visually see anything wrong with it. Put it back in and truck started running bad again. Went back to putting fram/motorcraft in it since that day.

A TON of this has been discussed before (not here) about how important it is to use Motorcraft filters only on the 7.3l and 6.0l powerstrokes. Spend some time on FTE and expect to go down the rabbit hole.

Cursed the hell out of my ************* hf abrasive chop saw. So much deflection, no power, and an in even hinge and it partially smoked a brush. Can not wait until I can get horizontal band saw.

Other than that started my fixture table.

Thankfully-no flooding occurred. I’ve determined that the oil in the pump housings are scented to alert you to the failure.. the **** stinks!! Replaced with new Wayne CDU800 unit.. (not technically in the garage-but it involved a roll of Teflon tape from the garage to install the new one..)

As much as I like trying to save my customers money, I'm starting to tell them bring me dealer only replacement parts. Had a few occurrences where aftermarket OEM parts don't fit like they should.

As for the filters, I generally use Motorcraft on my Ford 6.2L gas, and Baldwins were used on my diesels when I use to run diesels truck. Since I can get the filters cheap at walmart the motorcraft just seems like a better deal overall though.

I ran K & N oil filters in my 2002 7.3 for 10 years and 250K miles. Did periodic oil sample tests and all came out fine and normal.

Currently running Motorcraft in my 6.2 gasser and will probably switch once outside the drive train warranty.

Yesterday Dad comes home with my car (I borrowed his truck to pick up some lumber for a chopsaw station we are building) and says the engine light is flashing. I get out the code reader and it shows an intermittent misfire on cylinder 2.

That was job one.. While I was waiting on the plug to arrive (only changed the bad one seeing as they were all done in July) I began on job 2, which was to play some Garage Tetris in order to make room to move the Table Saw out into enough space to rip down a couple sheets of plywood for the new chopsaw station that will go on the wall where the cabinet was. I'll try and start a remodel thread a little later.

Napa Gold are re-branded Wix filters...

Yesterday was take two of trying to strip off the paint of a little Wilton vise when my neighbor asked me where he could dump a lot of trash he had from finally cleaning out his garage. I pointed down the street at the new home being built with the huge roll-off dumpster... lol... (Note: He didn't have *that* much trash, just a couple large cardboard boxes really, guess he was too lazy to break them down for recycling.)

While over there he asked me about the air compressor I built for him, a fitting was leaking some and he was worried it might explode or something, lol... I told him nothing bad would happen but I could fix it pretty quick. Had to pull the motor off to un-thread the tree (old sanborn parts) going into the tank. For some reason I used pipe dope on those threads, but everywhere else I used teflon tape... Cleaned off the pipe dope, wrapped teflon, and re-installed everything. Built up pressure and all was well, easy fix.

Eventually made it back to my garage and managed to polish up a couple parts and strip more paint from the Wilton.

Oh yeah, also managed to kill a couple hours on Amazon looking for some consumables (wire wheels for angle grinder and polishing compound).

Dayum! What a mess of a motor!

OUCH.....that is a mess

OMG that camshaft...
Yep, roller rockers don't work so well when they turn sideways... It came out of a van. The guy said it never ran right since it was rebuilt. You think?
It's already punched .030" over and I was planning on putting a new cam and lifters in anyway. As long as the crank can be turned, I should be alright. I'm planning on building it for my 69 Camaro.
