Well I was told by my agent before building that my homeowners company (Travelers) would insure this barn even though its on a vacant lot,,agent said it would be covered as an endorsement on my home owners policy..
Build the barn now the agent said she was wrong,,wtf...I even have a letter and a binder saying it would be covered...
Any of you guys have a barn insured that is NOT on a lot with a home ??

State Farm added a rider to my homeowner policy to cover my shop which is about 8 miles away from my home. I think they call it an "off premises structure". It added $12 a month to my policy.

If you really want to rattle her Cage ask her if her Errors and omissions policy is current! Most states require agents to be insured - so when they make a mistake it is not your wallet that gets hit!

Is it a separate policy or an endorsement on your home policy ?? Cost and coverage ??

Mine is listed as a dwelling extension on my home, with an $87k estimated value.

Don’t remember how much the bill went up, but my house bill is in line with a couple of other properties we have.

Your state may have different rules than Michigan does.

So her boss knows he has lost a customer and that's it?

Time to go shopping. State Farm, Farmers, Chubb (IMO perhaps one of the more expensive but better companies)

Any particular state you are in?

I wouldn't give State Farm a dime. I was a customer of theirs for ten years. We had a large hail storm go through a few years ago. All of my neighbors got a new roof. State Farm came out and had a look. They drew a map of my roof to one lone shingle so many rows up and so many columns over and cut me a check for $13.50 to replace the one shingle that had hail damage. Then they dropped me. It was the only claim I had for ten years. The new insurance company paid to put a roof, gutters, and window wraps on, even though they weren't covering us when the storm went through. State Farm is a joke.

I have a farm an hour from home and my agent said she could not insure it. I went to an agent in the small village near my farm, and they insure lots of farms, so they insured it. The next year that agent asked to review my home, umbrella and auto coverage, so I took my policies to him. He insured everything and saved me $500. The old agent didn't like it, but too bad. The moral of the story is to shop around.

How do you have a vacant lot with a pole barn on it?

Same question.

The county refused my request for a building permit to build the detached garage on my property before building the house. The code here says the house must be built before or concurrent with any detached permanent structure. They are worried about people operating an untaxed/unlicensed business, or so they say.

What is the zoning of your land. If residential then house first sounds right. If agricultural then no house required and buildings to support the AG process are allowed. This is in Oregon.
