Sweet finds! They would make neat space age-y Go-Karts. How about fenders on a homemade Airstream-like camping travel trailer? Stickered up or painted with WWII insignia or fuselage nose art.

Now there are some ideas I had not thought of. One other would be a cool motorcycle side car. Thanks!

Lug: i'm pretty active on almost all the vise threads and i'm still learning. if you want to look for a Buggati that looks sort of like a Wilton Bullet vise i think the last one on auction that sold was for about $6,000 so not chump change and i heard one guy was asking $12,000 for his and not sure it ever sold.

you really can't go by $1 prices per pound any more unless it's part of a huge buy that has several big machines in with it and was headed for scrap which doesn't happen all that often, but it does.

you've got an idea and you knew that a big old Columbian for $50 was a great buy even though they are fairly common cause it's a good working vise.

as was said everybody's top 10 is maybe based on their personal use or the way a vise looks. i know i like the way old Reeds look and I wouldn't buy a newer one, but as you might know i like vintage.

RM: WTF?? Wow i like those too!! if you want to see a rocket painted check out Don Long's garage gallery thread cause i think in November he painted his to hang in his garage.

Outlaw: when i was a teenager that ring would have been THE ONE TO OWN! can't tell you how many times i forgot one wasn't a twist top or tried to pry the cap off even if i knew it was with something handy that could have really injured me.

Outlaw, Drives: Sorry, it was I who wasn't clear. I realize it's not strictly like the old days (by the pound), and I see, in general, the prices vintage vises, in general, are being exchanged at depending on condition, restoration, etc. I can see that from following the GJ vises thread. What I don't see, and what I haven't heretofore had the time or inclination to track, in a disciplined way, is if brand (Mfgr) is any factor above and beyond that. Even in your clarifications I'm still not hearing any brand distinctions other than maybe Wilton bullet and baby bullets trending lately. And I find that odd. Regardless of personal preference, brand does matter to price in the rest of the tool world. There are always exceptions, anomalies, etc, but brand does matter. So I find it interesting.

My first thought on seeing that ring was "bottle opener" too, but I didn't see it fast enough.

I only had a couple sales to check out today, none of which had anything garage-y left when I went; just got a few books at one. There was supposed to be a third sale on my list, but either they decided not to bother at all today since it was raining (despite the ad saying 'rain or shine') or else they packed up hours ahead of schedule.

You are correct that brand does matter, but most of the MFG's "back in the day" had different classes of vises with different price points.

Machinist vises were generally top of the heap, with pattern makers vises, and the "combo" vise that had pipe jaw inserts close to them. (Some place the Combos at the top.)

Next down were shop and garage vises, mostly with formed slides of of sheet steel, but still protecting the main screw thread. these were lighter in weight than the ones above

Next down were homeowner Vises - Exposed screws, light weight (15 Lb being fairly heavy in this class, some < 10...)

Generally IMO three brands stand out either high or low in the "commonly seen" Machinist vises: Wilton's and the Buigatti command a premium. Its all about supply and demand. Bugatti is in a class by itself.

Wilton is widely regarded as worth the premium, and despite a plentiful supply, command a much higher average retail price that most other similarly sized vises. (I like Wilton for this reason alone. I've bought and flipped or traded every Wilton bullet or Cadet I've bought with the exception of the Baby I got last summer, and for good $$)

Columbian is undervalued, and for a user is often a good deal. It is is not so good for flipping.

Most of the rest? Good to decent for flipping, if you can find them at a good deal.

If you can find them cheap, Wilton is the money maker. (I've made anywhere from 6 to almost 15X what I paid for them)

Last time I checked they sell for up to $50 each, and when you have multiples they go up in price. I had ten at one time but one was broken during a move... I got mine one at a time from thrift stores ($1-7 each).

Auction finds. Box of USA sharp drill bits $15 and a Wilton tradesman 6" $25. The Wilton came on a bench with a bunch of hardware and chemicals. The one jaw is broke and the ledge it sits on is broke too. Plus some grinder marks. I have some nickel rod I might try to make it a little better.

Sometimes, you just have to understand when you're being guided away from your plans. Today was one of those days, as I left home with plans for the morning, and ideas of a swing past the flea afterwards. A "quick trip" to McD's for food-like substance derailed my plans for the rest of the morning, b/c of what was involved when a...patron...should have had a spreadsheet to order breakfast ($95 worth!!!). 20 minutes later, when I finally got my order, my plans were out the window. So, off to the flea I went!

The GOOD:

1. Brand new GI steel toed boots were probably the best deal of the day. I'm surprised how well these seem to be made (pigskin leather and good cushioned sole).
2. I recognized the metal box from Connecticut immediately, sitting on top of a bunch of other tools. It contained a partial long-C Craftsman BE 1/2" dr. set, with some good trade bait mixed in. Ratchet works like it should.
   • Craftsman BE: 1/2, 21/32, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 12" extension & ratchet
   • Trade stuff: (Duro 7/16, Hinsdale 1/2, None Better 9/16 & SK 11/16)
   I had a loose BE in 11/16 hanging around, so put that in to replace the SK.
3. Multicam jacket for a buddy
4. 3AD old-style crests for another buddy who was in 3AD in Desert Storm
5. honey and pecans are already in my cupboards

The BAD:
Controlled steel DOE. It'll go with one which I picked up a couple weeks ago. Not sure what to make of them, but if I can put together a set, then....It didn't cost much.

The UGLY:

1. no plug for the BE ratchet, so I'm now on the hunt for one of those.
2. the crud and rust in the box which came from New Britain. No Craftsman label on it, but some WD-40 and a couple paper towels to clean the box, a little straightening, and a couple hours working on the condition of the tools in it and the set looks very different.
3. Fairmount 8" pliers (I should have been looking for 8" LINESMAN pliers....). Not expensive enough to be an issue.

Actually got a week end off with 70 degree perfect weather! hit the small flea market early and saw stuff from the parking lot! more on that later.... I ended up buying a few small things here and there. Then hit a few estate sales. Once again a tool box fulla stuff followed me home. Asked the price for the entire box got $25. Looking through it saw at least three snap on tools. Made the deal and brought it home. Tons of stuff in there. That's a beauty! I assume from the ruler that the toolbox itself is from 1930 as well? Even with the more-scuffed-up outside, it's looking great for 88!

I actually have no clue about this box but thought it was a good buy and in good shape. that ruler and some other literature were in a couple of the drawers and a few tools that I have no clue what they are.

Rory: sounds like you have some good welding skills so maybe you'll be able to fix that old Wilton that must have been hit with a hammer or something pretty hard and often.

a few of the guys over on the Vise Repair 101 thread would love to see how you fix yours so if you have time to document it and post over on that thread in vintage tools here's the link:

also a few of the fixes for that are maybe to machine the faces and maybe cut in slots for new pieces of steel is one i can think of. post up the damage and your thoughts and ask for ideas and maybe a few of the welders and machinists will see it and comment.

This one came in the mail today. I put in a bid on it on Eprey, and won it for 51c above the initial bid! (Who bids, 1c over opening?)

These were made in Solengin Germany, (I'm not sure how long ago, but certainly in the 60's possibly earlier...), and the steel is great and takes and holds an edge well, you do have to watch it for staining/rust however, but I've carried a relation to this one for well over thirty years as my main skinning knife.

I have plans for this one; to modify it into a gut hook knife. Shorten it s bit as well and curve the edge so its a better Skinner.

Something like this: The middle one is an older (but not to old) Old Timer and factory ground.

The top one I bought with the tip busted off and started to make a gut hook out of it, but the hook edge needs a LOT more work for that use. The Edge on this one does NOT need any work! It is scary sharp, and did most of the skinning on my son's deer this past fall.

I marked up the proposed curve and hook but will let this simmer a bit before starting on irrevocable grinding.

Why another? I mentioned my similar skinner. It's the small skinner; not even 4" of blade. Its also the one I pout through my left index finger thirty years ago... I also have its big brother, the Uncle Ax, and soon the gut buster Cousin. Here is a family portrait:

Picked up a surprise CL purchase yesterday after work. A surprise meaning when do you ever expect to find two WWII era airplane belly tanks for sale at a reasonable price in my area of the world. I've searched and kept my eye open for just one for a long time but seems like everything is far away from me. These were an hour drive down just over the Ohio border and after a little negotiation they were loaded in my truck. They actually came from Michigan and this seller (antique dealer) bought them out of a barn where they were sitting.

They look to have been sitting in dirt which rusted through the middle section skin. Someone years ago had cut them out for what looks like seating and also welded some pipe through the front and back to mount them somewhere. Not made for real axles even though it first looks that way. I'm guessing they were a kids ride or maybe on display in front of a typical VFW Hall.

Anyway the front nose sections and rear tail sections can be saved. In my goofy way future thinking one of these could possibly become a tribute type belly pan streamliner. I have always admired the shear ingenuity of those cars and the courage of the guys who built them. For now I will be their caretaker and keep them from rustling away or going the crusher.

Man you ****! Wondering how much you paid since you said you got a good deal on them ! I am guessing you paid $400 ?

Follow up on small Snap On carry box I picked the other day.
It is a KMC921GB.

It was a party box with chips , cards, dice and cribbage board!
And it's no toy, built as solid as a full size box.
Bought it to flip, but it's neat as hell.
Might end up being house box so I dont have to run out to the garage every time I need a tool.

Found the Harley wrench, Mac pliers, non spark Vaco screwdriver, and Snap On awl at a yard sale for a total of $4.

hah nah it was for the whole box. I did some research last night and I think it was made '40-'42 by the pulls, hinges, and foil covered label. Just need to figure out the best way to clean the doors felt it has a stain on one sire. the rest of it is in really good shape! Seems the Leatherette boxes are a lot more rare, only see a few of those. the leather handle on top is shot though... I found you can order one from their website though! I also found out the backs of the drawers all have handwritten numbers in pencil. Marking each drawer, mine are 6HH in the bottom of the box, then each drawer is 6HH-1,-2,-3 ... and so on. which should mean it has all its original drawers.
