Saw an ad this morning on Craigslist for this 58" box, asking $500.

Rushed down there to check it out. Box looked good, a few scratches and scrapes, but in good shape. Very nice Griplatch drawer action.

I was getting poised to grab a HF 41" box on the January sale, but could not pass this deal up.

Did I do OK :bounce: ?

Thanks guys!

I'll pick it up on Wed, and see what TLC might be needed - mostly cosmetic stuff, I believe.

Christmas came early this year .

I believe that part number on that box is CTB-CAB5824BL with a 2008 list price of $3695. Did it come with keys? You **** really doesn't convey the value of this find, perhaps you need to have your stomach pumped maybe a high enough of a tribute.:bounce:
Did you have to hold a gun to anyone's head?

It did come with a key, although some drawers could still be opened when the box was locked. No biggie for me, as it will be in my home garage, but I will have to investigate what's up with that.

Did you have to hold a gun to anyone's head?

The guy told me on the phone that he "guarantees that the first person to see it will grab it", and he was right :). I was fortunate to be the first, although he told me that while I was en route, he had guys calling him and telling him they'll be there in 5 minutes, but to his credit he told them I was en route and had first dibs.

He's a really nice guy, works on custom/concept cars for Mercedes and Lexus, had a cool looking Kia in the driveway that is destined to the SEMA show next year. He was happy to be rid of the box, and I was thrilled to take it off his hands. Win/win.

Have to say that is one of the best box deals I have seen on this forum, and I buy/sell a LOT of boxes from CL.

Nice score indeed.

Chris, coming from you, that is a big compliment. I've seen your posts about your great CL tool box scores all around CA, so I feel pretty good (and lucky) to have grabbed this one.

That ***** I didn't see it first. I would have raced you there.

Hi neighbor .

I gotta tell you, I had so many CL misses in our "cozy town" of 10 million (the KR1000 for a grand last month, the 41" Waterloo for $350 last week), that I was beginning to lose faith that I'd ever be able to beat out the rest of you guys on anything worth getting. But I obviously lucked out on this one.

So as others have said to me - be patient, keep looking, be prepared to show up cash in hand. Oh, and don't settle for any of the many overpriced boxes that seem to pervasive around here - a good deal will eventually show up.

Not really, other than it was an extra box he no longer needed. I got the feeling that he didn't want to have it sit around for a long time, so he priced it "to move", and move it did!

very nice deal for sure. Of course if you've been searching through the 3 or so craigslist sites for "so cal" than you deserve it. It gets so frustrating seeing things close to retail all the time, it gets hard to want to keep looking.

You aren't kidding. I did get into the (frustrating) habit of looking up not only LA County, but also Orange, Ventura, and even Inland Empire. Then I got frustrated when I saw some promising items and realized they were 3-4 hours drive away...

Ditto on the "retail" pricing by many sellers in this area. I saw a couple of tool boxes last week where the guy wanted $1500+ for old not-so-good stuff. I told him the boxes were worth closer to a grand, and he said he's sure he'll find someone to pay the 1500. Problem is, in a city this big, there are bound to be some fools to dish out such dough, so that just rewards sellers like him.

Probably nothing, but were you nervous at all paying him without taking it home yet? Did you ask him if you could pay for it when you picked it up?

I did ask if I could just leave a deposit, but he said he wanted the whole amount to hold the item. He seemed like a trustworthy guy, and I don't see him as pulling some kind of a scam. Of course I have misjudged people before :lol_hitti...

And of course, the obvious question; did the seller actually own the box or was it being paid off? (and not necessarily by him)

I can see his side of it...but I wouldn't have given him the money before picking it up. Seems like it would be an awful good scam. Advertise something like that at an unbelievable price, insist on the full amount to hold the item, then disappear.

I'm not trying to scare you...honest!....but just wanted to relay my concerns. People aren't always what they seem...and the best con men are going to put you at ease, aren't they? He could've insisted on a $100 non-refundable deposit and if you didn't get it in seven days, he'd put it back for sale.

Only thing with that scam is what about the guy that shows up w/ a truck ready to load it. Then your scam is just over. I was lucky in the fact that the box i just grabbed fit in the back of my 4runner, otherwise i would have had to grab a trailer.

If you're running the scam and someone shows up ready to take it, you just make up some b/s about promising to sell the box to someone else who offered more money. Scammers think of all the angles. No...I'm not a scammer....I just think of how to protect myself when I'm a buyer. Nothing against the OP...he's probably fine BUT he definitely left himself open to being scammed...did he not?! :shocking:

i'd be reluctant to open the front door for the next year. Cops would ask me if i had recently bought a blue toolbox? and if they could check the serial number. But thats my luck. Good buy no doubt

Guys, all good points, and I would probably say the same thing if I were on the other end of the keyboard. And I may still be proven wrong, we'll find out tomorrow.

But, regarding the "scam" aspect, I told him that I'll take the box and he said OK before I told him that I will need to come back for it later or asked him to deliver it. So he had no way of knowing that I was not going to take it right there and then when he accepted my money.

As far as the box being paid off, I actually asked him and he looked at me like I was from the moon or something (or like I have been hanging around suspicious guys like you for too long :) ). I guess you had to be there and see the whole shop and the setup - the guy is running an impressive car business in the back of his house, he is not some (forgive me) nosepicker selling a tool box on a street corner. At least that is my assessment.

I guess we'll find out tomorrow morning. Good thing I scored a night shift at work tonight and so won't have to lose any sleep tonight over this "scam" concern you guys brought up!
