the weather turned damp and chilly overnight, i had planned on cleanin the **** off my workbench in the garage, and putting away the tools ive just left laying around since late fall...

i decided after the wife and i went to grab some lunch, that i'd clear the **** off my woodworking bench in my reloading room....

2 large and 2 small bags of **** off the bench and surrounding floor :eyecrazy:

wifes been hinting she wants to go shooting, (a new indoor range opened up close by back in the fall) since i had an available flat surface i pulled my reloaded ammo out to do an "inventory" my plan is to start shooting steel plates and USPSA matches again this year.
looks like its time to order some more bullets. :shoot5:
i havent had to have bullets shipped to me since i started shooting USPSA back in the mid 90's. bullet caster was local enough to me back then i'd just take a 90 minute drive and pick up my order of 5000 or so bullets. i had a guy locally that would cast my bullets, but it took over a month for an order of 500, and he said he wasnt going to do anymore of that weight, it was too time consuming..

even lead prices have gone up quite a bit :shocking:

Yesterday afternoon, the garage had warmed up to almost 50, so I decided to brave the elements :D and see if I could figure out the running issues on my Aviator that's been sitting in the back corner since early November. I was too pissed at it back then to work on it...now I've calmed down enough to give it a go, as long as it is kinda warm-ish in the garage.

Two hours later, I wasn't really much closer to getting it figured out. I went in to grab a beer, noticed a cool show my son was watching on TV, sat down to finish the beer & fell asleep in the recliner. Oh well, it was a good nap.

Not today, but Friday my son & I replaced the timing belt, idler pulleys and water pump in his '11 Outback. Not certain that the water pump was a real necessity, but he wanted to do it while it was apart. A couple of the idler pulleys felt a little rough, however.

After that we left for the Sno*Drift rally in Atlanta, MI.

Making good memories with my kid. :)

Buttoned up the valve covers on the 928 after getting distracted by cabinets, peg walls and assorted other garage based shiny objects.

Gave the upper Garage the midwinter floor scrub. Bought this Floor Scrubber off Craigslist about 8 years ago. $200 with 6 boxes of pads. Guy said it was too hard to push.

Got it home and the front Casters we completely destroyed. Got online, found new caster wheels on McMaster and it runs like a champ.

Now off to the wash bay in the basement with my Pick-Up. It needs a bath.

What a great way to clean the garage floor! Might have to add that to my searches on Craigslist!

Trouble shooting an ABS code C1226 in a 2004 Impala SE. Did an ohm check on hub, and no open circuit so it should be good. Looking like the harness. And what a pain ... need to check wires from hub to ABS comp, one at a time.

I didn't get much done last night in the shop. Arrived home from work a bit late then a friend stopped by and was asking me about cutting the end of his new to him trailer off and beaver tailing it. Ended up sitting around and BSing for about an hour or so then called it a night. Hopefully will get something done tonight.:dunno:

Picked up some 20 bin HF parts trays for more storage, but really did not have space for another cart at the moment, or wall space. I built this as a free standing rack I can put on top of my bolt drawer units. 20 feet of 1" angle, another 15 feet of flat bar and some misc cutoffs I had handy. Should hold up well and does not flex.

Wood and I don't get along, but give me steel and my Hobart hot metal glue gun and I can weld up what I need.

Now waiting for paint to dry so I can use it.

The Maggie on my Trailblazer leaked water into the intake Thursday at work. When I got ready to go that evening, it hydro-locked on the first key bump.

The city is still reviewing my re-submission for my Garage plans, so my buddy was nice enough to let me use his garage for an emergency engine rebuild.

I got the engine out & disassembled.... now to go make a parts list.

I just noticed that your engine has those newly designed "offset" con rods.;)

Rare.

Hope it goes back together well for you.

Finally got around to building a canned food storage rack, which I first sketched out over 8yrs ago.

canrack.jpg

Long story short, we 'buy it cheap and stack it deep' / 'store what you eat'. Wanted room for more canned goods. Chief problem just as with a deep freezer is keeping things organized / rotated so the oldest stuff gets used up first.

This design has a double layer of sloped shelves. You put the new cans in on one side, you take the oldest cans out on the side facing the door to the kitchen. 1/2" OSB backer board, middle divider and face are pegboard, shelves and end stops are OSB.
Sized to fit several common sizes of soup and vegetable cans. The bottom sections are sized to fit much larger No.10 / commercial cans (same size most freeze dried stuff comes in)

canrack04.jpg
canrack05.jpg
canrack06.jpg
canrack07.jpg
canrack08.jpg
canrack09.jpg
canrack10.jpg
canrack11.jpg
canrack12.jpg

I'll probably make some hinged doors to cap the ends.
Several problems, mostly related to the thinness of the OSB, and using OSB at all. Should have got plywood. The thin OSB made brad nailing problemmatic, too many deflections and too much chipping, trying to nail the glued shelves at their ends.
And even though I tried to compensate for the slope of the floor being opposite of the slope of the shelves, I cut it too fine and sized things too tight. I had to cant the whole unit a bit and jam some door shims under it, to get the cans to roll all the way. I was trying to jam one mor eshelf in the available height and making the shelves steeper would have prevented that. It works well enough now.

eta it's smaller than the sketch, footprint is 3'W, 10"D, 84" tall. I figure it will hold just over (200) smaller cans, (18) big cans. Call it 60,000 calories when it's full.

Saw bench is nearly complete, short of a melamine top and some finishing touches (the placement of the cord for the saw irks me, and will need to be prettied up some - Ideas welcomed).

Eventually there will be a few more totes under the 8' section that will house misc stuff like paint/drywall tools, plumbing stuff, electrical, etc.
1372cce230cf25205a8734fd18f37fc0.jpg

Next on the list is to sort through the wood stock in the back room and determine what's going up on the wall above the bench, what's being discarded, and what is going to be relocated elsewhere, what will stay where it is, etc.

Going for material maximization, so at least the two larger pieces of 3/4 will be used somewhere - clamp hanger is a possibility. The smaller bits will likely become kindling. cf7062d193865cfe81fe70e2ef795f6f.jpg

Need to source some by the foot airline to relocate the hose reel that used to be on the floor, for now we're just working with the small coil line until that gets addressed. I'd like to do rapidair or a similar system, but not sure that's in the budget just now, maybe come spring.

That's all for now folks. f14021c7dc4fe7c6a49edd9dc5311f7b.jpg

Second application of Ragg Topp vinyl protectant today. This is the original top on my 28 year old roadster. I'm pleased with the result.

Got bored. Made a rolling stand for my buzzbox so I could easily move it out of the way. Ironically I smashed my finger setting it in.

Took some scrap and made a bench grinder stand. It has booger welds because of how the square tubing sat in the rim. If I were to do it again id cut one plate out to fit nicely side of the rim and weld the verticle tube to that and I would do the same for the grinder itself. The angle iron slipped on the weld because I left the rubber boots on the clamp And they melted and shifted. D'oh.

I think I'd be tempted to put in a new outlet tied to the existing one and put it right behind the saw so you have a short coiled up cord for a clean setup. Could put in a pilot light as well and switch to let you know it's live, and if you have small kids, you could add a lockout. Even surface conduit would make a nice tidy install.

Started this tool cart yesterday and finished this morning. Bought the wheels at Menards and the rest came from the iron pile (metal storage for those not with a farm background). It will telescope to 4 1/2' to slide over the fender of the pickup. The tray came from the scrap at my local sheet metal shop. I may add some more tool storage on the out side for screw drivers etc. later but for now it's done. It may get a coat of paint if it ever warms up enough.

Suggestion: Apply foam pipe insulation or split some garden hose to go over the tray's sides. You don't want those hard sharp edges anywhere near your car's paint, even by accident. Don't ask how I know.

Played with the laser some more. Made a couple of cool edge lit signs. Also engraved 10 baseball bat mugs. Here are a couple links to the sign. These are really cool in your garage or man cave.

I love my laser engraver after all the mods to make it reliable. Edge lit signs are really cool, but I haven't found a good source for the lights/bases to do it with. I guess I could use some led light strip tape and make a base out of wood, but I'd rather use a premade one with the controller. What do you use?

I was making my own bases out of acrylic, then using 5050 led strips from ebay. But I found some pre-made ones the other day on Ebay. They were pretty cheap, but took a while to come in. They showed up the other day an are pretty nice. They don't have a remote, just a touch button. I'm sure you can find some on Ebay with a remote. Here is the ones I bought. https://www.ebay.com/itm/3D-7-Color-Changing-Touch-Switch-LED-Night-Light-Lamp-Base-Dock-with-USB-Cable/173021610719?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

ezriderga,
That top looks great for its age. I'm glad you posted this as I've been looking for a good convertible top, care product and, had not heard of Raggtopp. I just read their web site and some other reviews and it's a highly recommended product. I guess I'll have to order some and give it a try on my Mustang.

If you don't plan on moving the saw maybe you can notch out the bench to run the cord straight down out of view, then across and back up?

Or you can get those plastic cord protectors / channels to stick to the wall and run in there to make it straight & hide from view (kind of)...

Cord channel of some sort was kindof what I was envisioning, I can't see Dad being ok with cutting open a wall just to move an outlet because a cord is running funny across the bench, lol.

Restored a new toy for my son. This was my Dad's, then mine, and now it has new life.

Here is a video if you want to see how the sausage was made, the restoration process I mean.

Got a freebie filing cabinet into place yesterday. Also went dumpster diving for a piece of 3/4" plywood to put under it.

Moved a few power tools into the top cabinet. Nice to have things not only out of visible sight but also hopefully keep from dust building up on them...

I had an interesting day in the shop. After the usual turn on the heat and lights, I waited tor the compressor to build pressure.
1) I added a new MILTON "M" air fitting to my new DYNABRADE 15075. A little air tool oil in and it was time to make some sparks. This cut-off tool is the best I have ever tried. It has just enough mass to resist bucking and kicking and at the same time it has a comfortable weight. I ripped the end off of a 19 millimetre piece of DOM tube. Next victim was a piece of 16 gauge cold-rolled. The 16 gauge cut like butter.
2) The auto club tow truck arrived and took my Ram 2500/Cummins to a Diesel shop for diagnostics and possibly a new VP44 pump. Suddenly I felt trapped. My go everywhere RAM was away.
3) I got a call from the garage door shop that sold me a door and installed that new door in my shop.. The female voice wanted to know if I was still considering having one of their roll-up doors installed. I am not sure this person understood me when I told her they had installed the door 6 months ago. She was insistent that I set up an install date because I had paid for the door 6 months ago. I think the "coin finally dropped" and that subject was terminated when the voice discovered her mistake.
I told the voice that I want someone to tell me how to program the remote controls. Eight email replies later, I was sent a pdf with the instructions. I am OK now.
We are having home-made hamburgers for supper and my wife made cinnamon buns for afters.
