But how did you know to paste after you hit printscreen?
I usually have an image editing program already open, paste, then save as a JPG.

Google docs is free and supposed to be compatible with Microsoft.
I use both at work, and they're pretty compatible, but when converting between G-Docs and Word, it's not 100% WYSIWYG. The advantage of G-Docs if the ability for multiple people to edit, which is a huge time saver when I'm working on a scientific manuscript with co-authors.

Andy I used open office which works with documents from Microsoft office. It was a free open source down load. It appears it is still available but no longer supported.

For open source, you could also check out Libre Office. I've used it a little and it seems pretty good.

But I've pretty thoroughly drunk the Google-aid.

Ditto on the young guys thing.
A young friend of mine I met 14 yr ago when he was 12 siphoning diesel out of my service tank to put in his lil honda 50 motor bike, just called me and stopped for a visit today.. Hes now out of college and wanted to introduce his future wife to me.
One of my best friends even if he now lives 1200 miles away.
He introduced me as the best teacher he ever had.
He is now a mechanic for a European luxury car dealer and loving his life, told his girlfriend if I had not have taken his cycle away and made him tell his mom what he did, take it apart and clean the carb and fix a few other issues we found he would probably be a jail bird like one of his best friends at the time.
Gave me a right proud glad to be alive feeling
today was a really good day to be me

Andy: sorry to hear about your Dell laptop issues. i've got a half dead 2011 one sitting next to me currently that 2 years ago the IT (computer geek for expert) guy at a company where he keeps 300 or so Dell laptops running smoothly or as smooth as possible has always helped me if i asked and 3 years ago he said my 4 year old laptop at the time was not worth spending money on to fix.

so I bought a new Dell laptop and my bride talked me into getting the $300 3 year extended warranty where I could call/email Dell (in INDIA) about any issues. well getting Windows 10 to work right when it first came out was a huge issue, but finally resolved that after many many calls and learning who at Dell knew what they were doing and who tried to play the BLAME GAME.

then i'm like you cause i've bought several versions of Microsoft office since it came out so i have a box full of them (BTW I loved MS WORKS and haven't even tried to use EXCEL much). so the latest version was 2013 and getting it's OUTLOOK to work correctly with my emails took another bunch of calls to the smart guys at Dell in India.

I was going to buy a IMac, but like you i'm not a fan of change. i still might buy a IMAC the next computer cause i'm liking my new IPhone. if you do buy another Dell you might as well buy the warranty and get them to fix the bugs cause mine runs pretty well now (knock on wood) for my internet and emails which is about all i use it for.

one of these days i'll probably try to use Excel for spreadsheets on cool subjects maybe like old tools, but with all the touch screen and other cool computer upgrades in the last 20+ years Microsoft 10 is just another crappy version of Windows 95. Windows XP might have been the best one for me personally and when they went to Windows 7 and quit supporting XP was a sad day here in the PNW for some of us old guys and gals.

good to hear you are teaching a local young man cause you've been teaching us for a while now.

have a great SATURDAY getting ready for a real one!!

Hmmm, my laptop works so good except I can't turn it off. Well, I can, but it's a one way street.:willy_nil

My religion does not allow extend warranty purchases. So I never consider them. I call myself self-insured. Surely they will fix the issues under their standard warranty.

I liked XP. my last laptop was XP, I think. The monitor quit on it so I bought a free standing monitor and patch wired a docking station. It then became a desktop. I might still be using it, it's sitting there. The fan started roaring regularly. I had plans to build a cardboard duct and use an external fan but I was taking a lot of photographs so I got this laptop with a terabyte hard drive. It's at 45% full now. It was nice to be able to carry it around but now it's hard wired into the grid too. And it needs a battery, only has about 15 minutes of battery life. But since I leave it plugged in continuously the battery is kind of a UPS.

I didn't care for Works. I've looked at Mac's but they are so expensive, and I've got that Microsoft tattoo...

And it's not worth trying to make Outlook work. I just use web email access and haven't ever accessed Outlook on this computer.

Back when I worked for The Man, I often ran PC fleets and one of my areas of expertise was running them until the wheels fell off. Just like any other machinery, you need to carefully pick your battles.

My current PC is seven years old and due for a replacement. At some point, security and backups become an issue. With Office 19 coming out late this year, perhaps a holiday upgrade is in store for me. Costco, here I come.

I started using Excel with Windows 3.0 in 1987 and like Andy, have become quite fond of it.

Office 19. Is that the one they only lease to you, for a small but not guaranteed monthly fee? Can I have my tattoo removed? Is that painful?

I think I started with Excel 2.0 when Excel came out. It was a breath of fresh air from Lotus 1-2-3. I used Lotus OK but Excel seemed to be intuitive. Die hard Lotus fans never liked Excel until Lotus died and they had to use Excel. I remember liking the upgrades to Excel 3.0.

It may be time to buy another Big Chief tablet and a fat pencil. I guess I could just use carpenter's pencils.

I usually have an image editing program already open, paste, then save as a JPG.

I use both at work, and they're pretty compatible, but when converting between G-Docs and Word, it's not 100% WYSIWYG. The advantage of G-Docs if the ability for multiple people to edit, which is a huge time saver when I'm working on a scientific manuscript with co-authors.

Ha! You knew to paste.:pimpflash

Boy oh boy did I like it when WYSIWYG came along. What a relief it is.

I've done a little group edit, and in Word with five people editing and everyone making notes it gets pretty messy pretty quickly. And usually nobody is willing to incorporate comments until the last minute.

Andy I used open office which works with documents from Microsoft office. It was a free open source down load. It appears it is still available but no longer supported.

Dwight

I din't like Open Office much. and several of my old spreadsheet still have (compatibility mode) permanently on their title because I tried to move them to Open Office to save a few bucks. I went back.

For open source, you could also check out Libre Office. I've used it a little and it seems pretty good.

But I've pretty thoroughly drunk the Google-aid.

I tried some Google stuff but it makes me uncomfortable. Especially in this environment guys get in trouble for googling. And all they have to do is accuse you. You're out:willy_nil

I guess I'm enough of a peeping tom I do like Google Maps and Google Earth is my friend and as such has saved my **** more times than I care to count.

And I have gmail but balked at macros, no gstring for me.

You think the Google Kool Aid would dissolve my tattoo?

Where have I read about that before? Were there three of them and the red headed one turned around? My memory is fuzzy, but you're not on YT are you?

Your effort there is the best that life has to offer, helping another find his way.

Wish I could be you today...

Somehow we've wandered off topic, is Mom watching? Regardless, what great ***********! Thanks for stopping by. Guess I'd better fill the old Coke machine. Speaking of same, I may have come across a 50's Coke delivery truck. We'll see. Don't know what to use it for. It is apparently coming with the 57 Chevy cabover.

Busy day today. I started making more hammer handles and a friend stopped by to give me an adjustable angle drill press or light mill vise. Give. We haggled over price but he would not budge off his first offer.

attachment.php

I like to call him my Right Hand Man. (He's not as sensitive as Bob) He is a guy with a great attitude, all the time. He likes to give me stuff because he enjoys seeing my shop not be so empty, I think. This little vise is solid, very well build, replaceable jaws, adjustable gibs and almost no rust. No name on it.

He stayed until lunch so I invited him to go to Yale to eat at the new restaurant there. We met my son on the way up. My son was going to come through Yale anyway so my wife got to eat at her favorite restaurant.

Then we worked until dark mounting a new HF 12,000# winch on his trailer. I talked him into putting it on a receiver hitch (which increased my work) but it turned out Ok. It was getting dark.

attachment.php

Also added a 2-1/2" wide lug 1" thick on the back of the trailer for a shackle and ****** block. Will help him pull low until the load is close to the trailer.

attachment.php

They went to Sand Springs and my grandson bought an 85 High Sierra (GMC). Nice truck for $300, it has a 6.2 diesel from hell in it. I smell an engine swap. I suggested a Duramax bu the is thinking a six cylinder.

Thanks for the visit:bowdown:

Andy, you should buy a new(er) laptop -- I like to buy refurbished for a lower price but that's just me. I keep my old laptops and PCs for longer than I should. My old Gateway laptop is too wimpy to run anything newer than XP but it still works just fine in my workshop. I keep a lot of owners manuals for my tools on that machine and it's handy not to have to come up to the house to look things up. My 'new' laptop is a refurbished 2010 model Gateway that came with Windows 7 and is upgraded (free) to 10. I did hold last rites for my IBM Thinkpad 701 last year. That's the laptop with the 'Butterfly' keyboard. It still worked but the plastic was turning sticky and I was tired of trying to clean it up.

I am not a fan of Microsoft so I keep Lotus SmartSuite on all my PCs. I am forced to use Office so I buy older versions. I got rid of the diskette versions but have CDs for Office 97, 2000 and 2010. Those really old versions have different file formats than the Office 2010 so that was another forced purchase. I haven't found a good reason to buy a newer version.

Andy, it is hurtful that you choose RHM over me. Now you know why mom liked me better.

After all the stuff I've given you -- oh wait, I only gave you one thing and it was nowhere near as cool as a vise. Never mind.

Andy: I'm with you on thinking that once you buy something it should work until you don't need it again. hell they've had INTERNET for 25 years and if you just want INTERNET AND EMAIL you should be able to use a COMMADORE 80 or whatever was the first small computer to run the internet. these are like cell phones where you are forced to buy a new one every 2 or 3 years and if you go longer you take a chance of terrible service or getting a virus or having somebody hack you.

that said i know it's expensive for a new computer, but as much as you like GJ i bet you and your bride would benefit from a new DELL OR MAC.

speaking of ORGANIZING AND COMPUTERS one of my To Do's might just be to gather up all the old computers and the stuff that goes with them that i now longer use and find a good place to donate them. i bet i have enough stuff to fill up a 10x10 shed and i need some good lumber storage.

hope you are enjoying your rest day (SUNDAY FINALLY) and I actually had a rest 1/2 day yesterday just hanging with my bride while she binged watched a few shows on Netflix.

cheers

BOB: I still say the BOB & ANDY show might rival RED GREEN in comedy and fun stuff cause it's the best show on the internet. thanks again for finding the time to give us a little snippet of your humor!!

BTW since i've got a lot of holes in gloves and the other matching glove is maybe like new which hand did you want me to save for you to pack in your box of goodies? Right hand gloves only or do you actually use the left ones too for some re purpose?

I did have a great day. He's a nice quiet guy, always willing to help. A genuine gentleman.

Bob: I value your opinion on computers very highly. My opinion on refurbished computers is right up there with saving money on a moderately old car which will soon become useless dues to electronics failure. I wish Vladimir were my neighbor...

So I had never considered buying a refurbished one but if you see wisdom in it I will probably give that a try. There is a good sized company in Tulsa that refurbishes them. I also never thought of getting an older version of Office. Brilliant thinking! My main reluctance for a new computer is not the cost, it's the software. I guess a good geek could transfer what's on mine to a new one.

I do still have my Excel 4.0 package and diskettes. While verifying the version I see I have the full 123 from 1985 but it has the big floppies. I also have a small floppy drive with a USB cord so I could reload Excel 4.0...

Thanks for the ideas, it may just be newer computer time.

Andy, it is hurtful that you choose RHM over me. Now you know why mom liked me better.

Well, you know what, he came by and you didn't. Why don't you ever come see me? Talk about hurtful.

Actually the one thing you gave me is very nice and I cherish it. When I get my paint booth finished I may even use it.

Funny thing about my Slot Machine friend, I knew him before the you know what happened. His name is Acie. Always positive and when he turned a tractor over on him, which should have killed him, he was cracking jokes to the ambulance staff as they were loading him up. He was positive the whole way through it all, seemingly no regrets. Until I started replying, because I've known him before his accident, it never really hit me how his name, Acie, seems to fit with only having one arm. He was probably 70 when he lost his arm, and lives alone (Acie, again) so I don't know whether his loss would be more traumatic than yours. Not that it's a contest. But I admire both of you guys for the attitude that you are going to do what you want to regardless of how many hands you have. I have to admit (order a larger hat, please) that I am really amazed at what you accomplish. I can't keep a screw in a screw gun with both hands whether I have sheetrock balancing on my head or not.

Go ahead, keep making fun of me, just remember when we shake hands I still have a free hand to slap you with.:dunno:

Oh My God Bob you are the bees knees!

BTW, Mr. Hide:bounce: (I love that term), if you do donate your old computers you know the hard drives can be read and someone may know what kind of bread you like...

Seriously, donating electronics is a good thing but I do have a little concern over some of the stuff on mine. I've got a bunch of them around too, and for the most part, I think they all still work. I've got my dad's old Gateway he gave me in the 90's that my wife used for several years. It has the same malady as this computer, it may or may not boot up when you want it to.

But part of my computer need may be negated. When my grandson brought back my 3D router has also brought me his other grandfather's computer my grandson had planned to drive the router with. Assuming it fires up I may just use it to store gcode.

On the gloves, Acie and I tried trading, and Bob probably knows this, Acie has left gloves but I was surprised to find my stack of worn out gloves (of course I keep them, duh!) all have the right hand worn out, even though I'm left handed. I guess I hold the trigger with my left hand and the work with my right. It kind of surprised me.

I'm having lots of fun and trust nobody is offended.

I know Bob well enough to know we could spar and have a good time with quite abusive language, all in fun, but most everyone else might think we were mad at each other. It is never my intention to offend.

Irfanview is a free ad free graphics viewer that I use for printscreen and paste, cropping, resizing, creating slideshows and many other things. It has a media viewing plug ins too, but VLC is probably better.
Whenever I retire an old PC or laptop, I remove the HDD. Not for security. I have an USB to HDD adaptor that fits small ide, large ide and sata. Not only don't you have to spend time transferring all your files immediately, if the drive is healthy, I end up with a large backup drive as I always have the cover off my PC to access the power cables.

I may not post, but I do read here every day! Happy Saturday!

It's a whole new universe I didn't realize existed. I've spent the last 48 hours watching Kato...

:willy_nil

Actually it was Fusion 360 and not Kato that has kept me away.

attachment.php

Yeah, I watched a few Kato videos too Andy, she's very talented!

I highly recommend Fusion 360 too, and it looks like you're picking it up quickly.

I'm still a rank amateur, but I managed to build a model of my house when I was designing my pergola.

This is from my thread from about a year ago...
Here's the 3D model I've built in Fusion 360, showing the proposed pergola addition hanging off the back there...
View media item 62493
I've also discovered that Fusion 360 will let me share the model online, so you can twirl it around and have a proper look. Here's the link if you're interested...

http://a360.co/2b0uQWV

The first person walkthrough view, and "explode model" options are particularly impressive...

Your Fusion 360 files are all stored in the cloud, but they are cached locally so you can work on them if you're not internet connected.

My view on storing things in the cloud is that it can be as secure, or more secure than keeping them on your own PC if you're careful (depending on your threat model).

My favourite definition of the cloud is "somebody else's computer". Keeping your files on somebody else's computer can be a good thing if that somebody else has a dedicated worldwide team of thousands of people making sure that computer doesn't break down, get viruses, get stolen, or get dropped off a kitchen table.

If what you're worried about is somebody hacking into your computer and stealing your secrets, then the cloud is probably better too. Unless you're a cyber security expert, your home PC is almost certainly an easier target for hackers than a cloud service that has lots of security experts looking after it.

Unless you're worried about the government getting your secrets, then you shouldn't put them on anybody's computer!

For the VAST majority of people and businesses, their data is safer in the cloud. Everybody's worried about hackers getting their data, or Microsoft/Amazon/Google using it for nefarious purposes, but the biggest problem most people have with computers is losing data because their PC got stolen, or they got crypto-malware, or their hard drive crashed, or their toddler put their laptop in the dishwasher.

:D

And it's not worth trying to make Outlook work. I just use web email access and haven't ever accessed Outlook on this computer.

Office 19. Is that the one they only lease to you, for a small but not guaranteed monthly fee? Can I have my tattoo removed? Is that painful?

Microsoft are definitely making it harder to buy anything outright (they obviously want everybody paying a monthly fee forever), but it's still possible. For now anyway, not sure what's going to happen when they release Office 19!

This article outlines how to find the full purchase options, and you can actually just buy Excel and Word individually if that's all you want...
http://download.cnet.com/blog/download-blog/microsoft-office-2016-buy-vs-subscribe/

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/Excel-2016/CFQ7TTC0K5F3
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/Word-2016/CFQ7TTC0K5D7

However, if you've still got your CD and licence key from the last full version you bought, you may be able to install that on your new PC. It will probably complain that the licence has already been activated, but just call Microsoft on the number that is displayed in the error that is displayed and tell them that your old PC died and you're installing it on the replacement and they will read out a big long activation code and you'll be good to go.

You mentioned that your 1TB HDD is 45% full. Do you back it up? And take the backups offsite occasionally?

Please tell me you have backups!

Remember 3-2-1 for backups...

3 copies of any file you care about
2 different types of media (Hard drive, USB key, CD/DVD, cloud)
1 copy offsite

And you should get a new PC or laptop, you won't regret it. Windows 10 is a bit of a learning curve, but it's hard to go back once you get used to it.

I wish I was closer, I'd love to come over and help you out with your 'puter stuff.

M.

Andy, you know I can't come see you. I would be out in the woods buffing that '56 Chevy the first two weeks of my visit. Then I would have to check and change the oil in the tractors, eating up the next month or two. I have no idea how long it would take me to steel wool and BLO all those sucker rods and bridge beams but that could be years. Liane tells me (and I bet Sharon agrees) guests and fish start to stink after three days. Some people have regretted my presence before the end of the first day.
I'm having lots of fun and trust nobody is offended.

Thanks for the comments! I do have IrfanView. I got it to work with spherical photographs. However it pissed me off by labeling itself the only reader to use and I don't like it for editing regular pictures. and, I really don't like their red bear logo plastered all over everything. Am I sensitive?

USB to HDD now that is cool! I remember paying a couple of hundred bucks way back when to upgrade my new computer to a 20 megabyte hard drive. That's right, a full 20!:rocker: Man I was flying in style!! Maybe I could plug it into a USB port with an 18 meg driver.:willy_nil

Why do you have to access the power cables? Is it possible to jump start one?

Yeah, I watched a few Kato videos too Andy, she's very talented!

Talent is in the eyes of the beholder.

I highly recommend Fusion 360 too, and it looks like you're picking it up quickly.

I'm still a rank amateur, but I managed to build a model of my house when I was designing my pergola.

This is from my thread from about a year ago...

I remember that image. It is pretty cool in my mind, but had no idea it was Fusion 360. It's a small large world.

I'm not feeling very quick, really having trouble understanding the difference between a component and a body. But I think I will be able to use it. I need a bigger screen and a mouse. It is not track pad friendly.

Your Fusion 360 files are all stored in the cloud, but they are cached locally so you can work on them if you're not internet connected.

That is important to me.

:D

I was being a bit facetious. I would be proud if someone stole my stuff and made money off of it. If you read my post carefully, it is internet interruptions and a slow connection that makes any cloud work tedious. One of the perks of living in the country, but at least I have DSL, even though I'm at he limit of distance from the last hub. The provider is our local phone company, an independent that gets signals from a dish that suffers when there is heavy weather.

I really don't care if anyone steals about any of my 0's and 1's. I'm retired and regaining my identity would give me a purpose in life.

I've had only upgrades for years, and have installed an old version on a new computer in order to qualify for an upgrade. It might save me some time to call them and install what I have. Bob gave me permission to not go with the latest, and I thank him for that. You've given me some really good food for thought.

What do you think of buying a refurbished computer?

You mentioned that your 1TB HDD is 45% full. Do you back it up? And take the backups offsite occasionally?

Please tell me you have backups!

Remember 3-2-1 for backups...

3 copies of any file you care about
2 different types of media (Hard drive, USB key, CD/DVD, cloud)
1 copy offsite

I used to always take a backup to work. I screwed that up when I quit working. But my injet printer died (door is open, according to the computer, needs a switch replaced) and I bought a new one in 2013 while I was living through the week in Houston. Working 12-13 hours per day, flying Monday morning and Friday evening, I was tired and never unboxed it. It's still in the box:lol: I need to open it because a scanner would be nice, but I scan with my cell phone. I said all that to say this, all my printing is done on my LaserJet 4Si. Did you know cartridges for them are super cheap now? When I was Church Treasurer I ran several hundred sheets per month, now I'm down to around a hundred. So anything I need to print from the laptop goes on my thumb drive, and anything I need to email from the desk top goes on the thumbnail to this computer. That's my remote backup, in my pocket. It survives welding and plasma arc cutting in close proximity and has been through lots of airport scanners. It holds all my Quicken and Excel files easily. Photographs go on a 1T Passport.

And you should get a new PC or laptop, you won't regret it. Windows 10 is a bit of a learning curve, but it's hard to go back once you get used to it.

Or a new refurbishment? I switch between 7 and Vista:rocker: on my desk top easily but will 10 and Vista play well together through the thumb drive? Windows 7 always wants to clean it up, but I deny it the pleasure of keeping Vista from reading it.

I wish I was closer, I'd love to come over and help you out with your 'puter stuff.

Boy oh boy I wish you were closer. All my friends her can help with what's wron gwith a cow but aren't much on the magic boxes. Except JB, but he's busy.

I've got land for sale...

M.

I store all my sensitive information and backups on an Equifax server.

You are a cunning devil. That way it gets lost in all the other stuff. Brilliant!!

As an aside, I had an aunt whose husband started with Retail Credit Corporation in the 1920's. They bought stock. She gave it to her siblings. It changed to Equifax. I inherited Equifax. I took a beating when they stubbed their toe. Easy come easy go!:lol_hitti But apparently there has not been much of any fallout from their breach, I keep watching the news for any reports.

We need to get on with the Studebaker!:rocker::rocker:

BOB: I still say the BOB & ANDY show might rival RED GREEN in comedy and fun stuff cause it's the best show on the internet. thanks again for finding the time to give us a little snippet of your humor!!

BTW since i've got a lot of holes in gloves and the other matching glove is maybe like new which hand did you want me to save for you to pack in your box of goodies? Right hand gloves only or do you actually use the left ones too for some re purpose?
Drives, I enjoy the time I spend on Garage Journal and feel like I have made friends with a great group of people (and found a couple of long-lost brothers).

I am trying to control my glove addiction so please don't add to my problem. I buy gloves at Harbor Freight because they are cheap but I also buy gloves at Costco and even Amazon. These are the garage work gloves (there are some in the workshop as well), including a dozen cotton gloves for working on automotive paint (keeps the oils in the skin from getting on the paint).
attachment.php

When I took up welding, I bought thick insulated gloves for the MIG welding (on the left) and thin gloves for the TIG (on the right). The TIG gloves are like wearing skin (they are) but relatively expensive so I turn the lefties inside out so they are righties.
attachment.php

Then there are the rubber gloves.... I started buying them at the drug store but those are so thin they rip just putting them on. Harbor Freight sells those really thick ones (9mm) for a good price.
attachment.php

So I don't forget, I keep a box of nitrile gloves on the side of the steel tool chest right next to the man door. I grab a glove when I'm going down to the workshop.
attachment.php

I think sending gloves to me is like sending coal to Newcastle (or Andy's forge).

^^X2^^

You might be surprised what fun we would have. Just tell Liane she can have the house to herself and she will know you are stuck out in the sticks and I suspect she'll book the flight. Sharon don't care as long as we don't hang around the house. And who wants to do that?

Interestingly I have plenty of old oil to change the tractors with. I've been saving full oil cans for many years. With the price of oil now so high the empty cans are worth as much as the full ones and the tractors need API SA or higher. What's not higher?

I like your X2. Reminds me of a mathematical notation system I invented. If you need a large number, like x^2^2^2^2, I decided to use brackets to indicate the number of times the exponent string is repeated. For instance, x^3^3^3 would be notated x^3{3} so you can handily write a large number such as x^4^4^4^4{10^10^10^10} without using up so much paper.:bounce:

Bigger is better, right? That's what the girls always told me...

Very interesting. You're being so coy, Bob. I think we all should demonstrate the power of the internet and our love for Bob by sending him all our unwanted gloves. I can pass along his address by IM:evil:

Maybe Bob should get a caboose or something to store all his gloves I think that would be a great use of that space or something?

just my thoughts for today!

Well he can't have my wife's big caboose, and that's final.

I need some help. My new computer for the CNC router does not have a 25 pin printer connection, and the router has a 25 pin cord.

Can I take just any printer card out of an old computer and install it in the new one?

What are the options?

I did find an adapter cord on eBay and it's on the way, but if I should be able to install a card from an old computer that would be cleaner.

First you need to find out what card slots you have on your PC. Laptops don't traditionally have parallel ports on them. Newer PCs have PCI and PCI-E slots. An adapter card for a parallelport is not expensive and finding one for a PC is still possible. An older ex-lease or refurbished PC with a parallel port is actually a good alternative too.

Old old computers had onboard parallel ports, the connector might be in a slot but the cable runs to the motherboard. There were some that were PCI but you really didn't find them too often.

You can still buy PCI & PCIe cards with parallel & serial ports. They also sell USB based ones.

USB based adapters don't work for CNC as you loose the realtime signal control via USB which messes with the CNC controller.

Thee is one or two USB and NIC based parallel port interfaces specifically designed for CNC the are realtime controllers and will work but they cost more than a cheap refurbised PC with a parallel port.

Thanks for your response! But I don't understand fully. I have a couple of old desk tops with a parallel port in the back. I don't know what PCI or PCI-E means.

OK, I guess I need to look for a PCI parallel port.

If the parallel port in one of my old computers plugs in, I guess it should work, meaning it would be a PCI and not cable based?

I'm assuming if the parallel port is vertical in a tower computer with the slots horizontal I'm out of luck.

I guess I could switch computers, take my desk top to the shop and bring my son's father-in-law's computer to the house, but I would have to check the software on it.

Nothing is easy anymore.

Thanks for the help guys!

If you have desktop computers with parallel ports already available, any of those should work.
I would recommend using a desktop with the port hardwired into the motherboard.

Any machine with a parallel port should work provided it is fast enough and new enough to run the software.

PCI(or newer PCI-E variant) are just expansion cards that fit in the bus slots on the motherboard where you can remove one of the blanking plates(horisontal ones on a tower) to fit the card bracket that holds whatever socket the expansion card provides. You should be able to look up the brand and motherboard serial# to find out what bus slots it supports if needed.

There is some test software you can run on older PCs to see if they are powerful enough. Provided the CAM software supports it and the OS.

I've had success with USB ones by turning the buffer setting all the way down, or disabling completely, in the Windows settings. But I do agree that the card based versions are the way to go if at all possible.

It really annoys me how computers today don't have these legacy interfaces when there is so much tech that still uses them (old & new). It's as basic of a connection as you can get and near bulletproof...

Thanks for the reply!

Well, I don't really have one with parallel port to use, unless the newly inherited one has Excel I want for my office desktop.

What is the disadvantage of a PCI parallel port?

My old PC is a 486 I think, the one with the 20 meg hard drive, if I'm remembering right. I may have gotten lucky, it has three parallel ports, one I assume is hard wired, one is male pins PCI, and one is female PCI.

If I'm understanding right, it should go in one of the slots in the new one

The new computer is dated 2012, CORE i3, so I'm feeling good about it.

attachment.php

Unless, of course, the old one and new one don't match. I'm surprised by all the cards in my old computer, but I think I upgraded it several times trying to avoid buying new. But I have no idea why all the parallel ports. I guess I'll see if it will boot up, just for fun.

Seems designers think we should be pushed to their latest and greatest. However I'm sure a USB is a lot cheaper than a parallel port.

The driver box for the router should be easy to modify

attachment.php

That's it on top of the computer. I wonder if the monitor will light up? They're cheap, anyway.

Here's the router, the bed has sagged but all the pieces are there so it could be reinforced or rebuilt easily.

The parallel card should work if it the correct size. They shrank right around PIII, so your 486 may be the wrong size. A card may be recognized as LPT2 rather than LPT1.

As for the red roadkill Irfanview association, you were a silly boy and at install when it asked if you wanted Irfvanview to be the default file association, you said yes. That can be changed back without uninstalling.
Considering the windows default is the utterly useless windows media viewer, I'm not sure why...

There is a 6.2 82 square body on my cl, only wants $1800. I'm moving to your state, everything is gold around here, even when you can see lengthwise through them they as so rotten.

486 is probably ISA slots (even older tech than PCI or PCI-Express).

Can you take the case covers off both the old & new computer and snap a picture of the inside slots? That will put an answer to if it will work or not right there. Worst case, ordering a new parallel port card is easily less than $20...

The 9-pin & 25-pin "male" connectors are serial ports. The 25-pin "female" connectors are the parallel ports.

+1 on posting pics of the un(der)covered towers.

Heck, if Andy doesn't have the right parallel port card, I'm happy to root around and see if I have one in the "old stuff" pile. I think I saved the 5.25" floppy drive from my folks old 386 for sake of backwards compatibility.

But I don't have anything to read the stack of 8" floppies (get your minds out of the gutter) that my dad gave me as a joke gift a number of years back.

Andy, when I suggested a refurbished laptop, I meant a machine from the original manufacturer, not a re-seller. As an example, this Dell laptop sold for $2,649. Refurbished, with a 1-year warranty, Dell sells it for $1,498. The memory and solid state drive along with touch screen make this a pretty fancy model. They have $200 machines as well.

  • Processor: Intel Core 6th Generation i7-6700HQ Processor (Quad Core, up to 3.50 GHz, 6M Cache, 45W)
  • Windows 10 Home 64bit English
  • 1TB M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive
  • 32GB DDR4 Dual Channel 2133Mhz N-ECC (16GBx2)
  • 15.6inch 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB GDDR5
  • McAfee LiveSafe 12-month
  • Dell Outlet XPS 15 - 9550

http://outlet.us.dell.com/ArbOnline...usXH3dvu0fVMuA+KOG2NT/TsO+3gQzyQFdpRPfIqT//8=

Amazon sells the same model with a smaller hard drive and half the memory for $1,659.

  • 6th Generation Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ Quad Core (6M Cache, up to 3.5 GHz)
  • 15.6" 4K Ultra HD Display (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge touch Screen
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M with 2GB GDDR5
  • 512 Solid State Drive with Windows 10 Home
  • 16GB (8x2GB) 2133Mhz DDR4 Memory Upgrade

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B9TQR7K/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I can't tell what the warranty is on this laptop from Amazon. It looks like it's 30 days but I might not be reading it right.

Obviously I did not say "yes", I just failed to see the box to uncheck. Does that irritate others like it does me? I usually look pretty good. I actually tried Google Chrome one time and it ddin't fit for me. I've almost requested it and a Google toolbar on several occasions.

Come on down, I'll sell you 5 acres to enjoy! I got pretty good at changing those 6.2 injector pumps. Still have my bent 14 mm wrench.

I think this is a newer computer. Maybe not. But here are the pictures of the old computer. The 2012 one is out in the shop and I went to Zumba tonight so I've got exercise clothes on.:willy_nil

I guess there's not much use for old floppies. At least CD's look good hanging from the mirror. I guess.

I'd be happy to buy a parallel port if the other computer looks like it will run, but I'm not opposed to donations either. What does the card above look like?

And I see the hard wired parallel port would be easy to install in the other computer. Any chance the ribbon would fit?

Why not? Do you only use the mini connectors?

Andy, when I suggested a refurbished laptop, I meant a machine from the original manufacturer, not a re-seller. As an example, this Dell laptop sold for $2,649. Refurbished, with a 1-year warranty, Dell sells it for $1,498. The memory and solid state drive along with touch screen make this a pretty fancy model. They have $200 machines as well.

Amazon sells the same model with a smaller hard drive and half the memory for $1,659.

I can't tell what the warranty is on this laptop from Amazon. It looks like it's 30 days but I might not be reading it right.

WOW! That Dell computer looks like a pretty sweet deal. I understand the difference of manufacturer reconditioned, and I like that even better.

Thanks for doing the legwork.

Andy: Do you really still have a 486 computer online and running? WOW and WOW. i bought mine in 1992 for $2,000 and it came with 4 megs and I upgraded to 8 megs which i think was about a $400 upgrade and you had 20 megs? i also remember my HP Laser jet printer was $1,600, but i bought a floor model for half that and if i wanted 2.5 megs of memory to maybe print color it was another $400. now we buy Terabytes for peanuts.

I surely can't say where my old 486 is cause i think i'm on maybe my 5th or more computer since then, but if yours is still running that's even more amazing than you repairing and using tires until the steel tread wore thru.

maybe i should ship you a container of all my old computer stuff cause sounds like if you can't use it Bob can.

good to hear you are back doing Zumba so i'm guessing you are starting to feel a bit better.

cheers

I pulled out the parallel port card

That looks like a PCI-compatible card to me. See if it fits in the new comp and is auto-detected.

I don't think I've seen through-hole-mounted, well, anything, on a computer in the last 10 years!

If it doesn't fit, put it in the computer museum. ;)
