Thanks, I may have to give it a try....

I have a couple of those (the top one). One is stuffed with tools that I tend to use a lot or tend to misplace (a bit of weight). The other stores electrical stuff (lightweight). Each is on a shelf.

IF you are concerned about the sturdiness when mounted under a bench, you could make a bracket so that it is supported underneath.

I thought about a bracket, but, not sure that I'm that invested into making them into drawers. I'm currently getting the shop more organized so we will see where they end up.

This one popped up on letgo, trying to get him to letgo for less.

But it’s a cool cabinet and I thought I would share.

Well, I didn’t buy the cabinet above. We agreed on a price, then the seller “discovered” that one had sold on eBay for $150, and decided he needed at least $75.

I guess I’m old fashioned, but once a price has been agreed to, the deal is done. Oh well, I wish home the best.

Fowl: sometimes the FATAL NEGOTIATING FLAW is not paying the FULL FAIR ASKING PRICE up front. since $50 was fair maybe he saw your $40 or $30 offer and decided to just see what they sell for. not saying the cabinet was worth the $150 cause I don't recall seeing the size or inside, but those are not common or very often for sale up here and I think we have a bigger market than you do.

better luck next time!!

I don't disagree Drives, but it wasn't worth $50 to me. It may be in some markets and I have no doubt that it might sell at an auction or ebay for much more with the right people going after it.

I would have taken it for $40. Probably should have for $50, but it's not something I need, just something I thought was cool, and I'm trying to save up my "shop money" for a jointer and a planer and a set of Dado blades for a project I have planned, so I'm in "too good of a deal to pass up only" mode.

He might, based on the messages he sent if I had some homegrown "Oregon produce" to trade, I probably could have secured the cabinet. He was more interested in that than cash. Like I said above, I wish him the best, and I truly do, he still hasn't increased the price on LetGo, so if somebody wants it let me know, I can pick it up and store it for a bit, I can probably even help arrange shipping. The guy was pretty sketchy in the messages though so communication would be up to you.

NY: sorry i don't know the ages of your cabinets, but guessing maybe 60's and 70's. nice group and good buy too.

Fowl: funny you mention having funds for other STUFF and mention that the $50 for a planer or other tools. if that hanging tool box wasn't something you NEEDED and something you might have liked to own or even trade or flip i don't blame you one bit for maybe trying to negotiate on it a bit.

that other tall cabinet does have the COOL LOOK doesn't it?

ALL: anybody else have a few metal cabinets in their shops or maybe at work that are interesting and maybe look better or more unique than a basic toolbox please post up the pictures.

thanks in advance!!

PB changed there policies and ruined a LOT of threads that used PB hosted pics. There is a browser patch that mostly works, but those are browser specific. What browser are you using?

Arrowhead: I love all your metal cabinets especially the one with 18 good size drawers that is a smaller version of my cole cabinets with 33 drawers. thanks for sharing.

if you'd like to post up your vintage Mac or Proto toolboxes over in the vintage toolbox thread i for one would like to see more.

I think you might have won the MOST STICKERS AWARD and a bit too busy for me, but happy you like them. i like the old parts book on your bench really gives your bench a COOL LOOK.

also WELCOME TO GJ!!

Thanks Drivesitfar. I added the decals to cover some of the surface imperfections on the wall cabinets. I had a decal collection and thought, why not? I like it, lots to see. The base cabinets were in really good shape and only needed a fresh coat of paint. I've had these in place over 25 years now come to think of it. They wrinkled their nose at me when I dragged all of these cabinets home on my trailer.

The Mac tool box was my first tool box I purchased used, back about 30 years for the huge sum of $200 top & bottom. Added the mid and side box along the way.

Arrowhead: nice story and BTW who is THEY? cause if they didn't like it i'm glad you followed your instincts and brought them home and installed them cause they look great and useful too.

is there a brand name on your 18 drawer cabinet? i have the 33 and 27 drawer versions with those size drawers and i'd love to get a few smaller ones cause that drawer size is about perfect for my STUFF.

in case you want to post up pictures of that cool old MAC box here's the vintage toolbox thread link and I for one would love to own one like it so take lots of pictures if you have time to and post them up.

Picked up a General Fireproofing two drawer filing cabinet that weighs more than I want to lift for $8...at my local ReStore. Unmarked, but got it priced for $10 and they were running a 20% off special.

Even though it was < $10...I still left with a sick feeling. There were three General Fireproofing (vertical opening) glass door three tier bookcases that were marked "Sold" there for $60ish bucks each...and that was before the 20% off.

TRS: I'm guessing Diddle is pulling yours (ours) legs with his thoughts on your cool box. :bounce:

it's looking to me like maybe it was for tools for a lathe or something like that. can you post up a couple more pictures and does that tool or handle come out that we can only see the head of or do tell?

DF: JOKING OR SERIOUS ??

Merc: I love General Fireproofing cabinets too cause they'd probably survive a nuclear blast. that said weren't you saying you have TOO MUCH STUFF a month ago or did you decide to finally lease a warehouse or storage unit and step up your game?

nice find and even if you couldn't buy those other cabinets if you are going to tease us about them you could have at least posted a few pictures for us to drool too. :dunno:

He accepted our previously negotiated price and apologized (too much). There is a story, but I have dinner guests so it will have to wait.

Fowl: yep that's a clean little cabinet and for $40 or whatever you bought it for since the handle is not broken and the paint is in good shape if you can't find a spot for it i'm sure you can sell or trade it and get some value out of it even down in paradise on the Coast.

i read something about your bride putting the Kabash on your tool buying until you moved and guessing now that you've got a bigger mortgage maybe it's a self imposed no buying unless needed rule?

nice find!!

Drives, you have an incredible memory. The tool ban was lifted, and I'm just trying to make a couple of bigger tool purchases. I need to pick up a planer, a dado set and a jointer for a project I have planned, so I'm trying to take it easy on the smaller purchases. But this cabinet was too cool to pass up for $40.

But it's a fun story: So as you all know I started trying to buy this cabinet a week ago on Letgo. The guy was trying to get me to trade for weed, and is fairly insistent that we've hung out and done vodka shots. I don't smoke weed, or drink, so I didn't have anything he was interested in trading for. Last minute, the guy decides to do his research and increase the price (the only other one I can find online sold at an auction for $150, I'm sure he found the same one). I declined on principle, we had already reached a deal.

jdoe predicted that he would contact me the next week, which he did. Since the guy was insistent that we knew each other and seemed more interested in vodka and weed than anything else, I insisted that we meet in a public place. So we meet at a local grocery store. I pull up and the guy is sitting there on a bench, immediately I know it's the guy, because I tend to attract crazy in my life. The guy is dressed in tattered camo, has a pile of fresh cigarette butts at his feet and is glancing around the parking lot nervously like he is waiting for the 5-0 to come flying in to break up our deal on the napa cabinet. As I get closer, I recognize some tell-tale signs of methamphetamine abuse, he has open sores on his face and arms, one of his pupils is completely blown and he smells faintly of cat piss (indicated that he's probably cooking as well). I walk up and the guy literally says to me, "do you have the cash?" I introduce myself, first name only. (I have never seen this guy before, I promise you). He says, "I know who you are, we used to hang out all the time, do you want to look at the cabinet?" I tell him that I do, I look it over, it is as advertised. The guy is getting more and more anxious, looking over his shoulder, I'm trying to see what he's looking at, but I'm getting a little sketched out, and glad that I only brought the $40 we agreed upon. I hand him the money. Then, he asks for a ride, he wants a ride back to his trailer. I decline. I'm thinking the guy is going to get pissed, but instead his shoulders drop in defeat and he tells me it's not a big deal. I wait until he starts to walk away and I go the opposite way to my vehicle, I load up the cabinet, and climb in, start the suburban and he knocks on the window, scaring the **** out of me (figuratively, not literally). I roll my window down a quarter of the way, and he asks me if I want to buy an 8' truck shell...(remember I'm driving the suburban). I tell him no, but I'll keep my ears open. He asks for a ride again. I just look at him, and he says "still no?" "Still no", I reply.

That's pretty much the end of the story, but as a reminder to everyone, meet in public places and don't carry extra cash to deals like this.

Also, the cabinet is super freaking cool and I need to find a cool place to hang it in the shop.

fowldarr,
That's quite the story of your cabinet purchase. I agree and also try to meet in public places for CL type purchases unless the item is not easy to move or I've thoroughly vetted the person I'm meeting. Too many whacko's out there. If the purchase involves higher dollar amounts I do not carry it on my person but rather leave it locked up in the truck so that after inspection of the item I always have to go back to the truck to get it. That way no one sees me handle it and count it out or if the situation is sketchy it allows me to back out and jump in the truck.
Many Police stations now allow purchase transactions in their parking or lobby, both of which are usually camera monitored. Some will even provide an officer to be present for safety.

Glad it worked out and you got the cabinet which is a cool one. Under those circumstances I'm not sure if I would have gone through with the deal.

RM: great tips you shared that is for certain. I've had good experiences with almost 100% of the buyers and sellers on Craigs or in Real Estate as i sold full time for almost 30 years, but there is always a few that think they can pull a fast one so you have to be prepared.

FOWL: you had me laughing out loud last night with all the detail and YOU STILL BOUGHT IT. OMG you have some KAHUNNAS DON'T YOU? i bet the knock on the window as you were leaving was a surprise for sure.

thanks for sharing and like RM i'm not sure i would have bothered for that little cabinet, but it will look great in your shop. also i hope that kid finds some peace in his life and maybe picks his *** up out of the gutter and starts cleaning his act up. i'm sure you didn't ask where he got the cabinet, but how in the heck did he get it, and he wanted a ride so how far did he walk with it and how long did it take him to spend the $40?

cheers and hope you find a good spot for it.

Yeah, I didn’t ask where he got it, but he mentioned his girlfriends deceased father when talking to me about the shell, so I assume it came from there.

I don’t know what he did with the money, but the liquor store was across the street and he didn’t go there. He did mention that they were trying to get to Alaska, so maybe it went to that fund (one can hope)

TRS: what am i missing cause the last picture you posted isn't the same cabinet that you posted before that Jeff said was for old locks? I like this last cabinet and if you maybe can post up a few more pictures of it with the drawers or door open please do.

ALL: some of you might know that i like (maybe that isn't a good enough word) metal cabinets so thought you might like to see how i use them. I started a thread cause i really need to scale my buying and get rid of a few storage units in case you want to see more, but here's a few examples of where i put some of these cool cabinets.

please excuse the mess as i'm GETTING ORGANIZED and take a peek at my thread in garage gallery as you see me stop playing Dance of the Cabinets or Garage Tetris and get my garage in shape again.

cheers and have a great weekend

BTW I'm able to download 7 pics per post cause it do it 1 or 2 at a time cause until GJ's transfer to their new site is completed if you try to download 3 or more pics at a time you get a security token notice and it kicks them out!! Slow and steady for now is the best way.

Hey Drives! I posted these in the 2018 Garage Sale thread as I went to my first garage sale in years yesterday. Here are a couple of cabinets I picked up. I'm hoping you or someone knows something about them.

The green one looks like a military issue to me. There are tools in all the drawers. The stencil on the side looks like gold paint so probably not military issue. Love the retro look of it though.

The gray Equipto has half the drawers missing. Do you or anyone know if it's possible to find replacement drawers?

I paid $5 for the Equipto. The green cabinet was part of a pile of stuff I bought at the garage sale for $20. On the day spent $30 and came away with a real haul!

Thanks for creating all the cool threads you have here at GJ.

Mike

Aha! I was hitting that trying to download 7 pics on my garage sale haul last night. Tried 5 with same results. Found I could make it work doing one at a time. This little tidbit should be a sticky until it gets resolved. IMO.

Thanks!
