A fairly productive day in the shop today:

1) placed a few more sections of slot rail on the North wall for wood storage. Ran out of brackets, so we will have to find some in the next day or so to complete the wood storage phase of the shop build.
Eventually the tool chests will be moved to the rear North section of the shop that will become the mechanical area, leaving the south 2/3 of the shop for woodshop.
bdc0aa79ff175881b650b20ac576e293.jpg

2) while staring at the last few pieces of lumber that needed to be put up on the wall, we decided to build a bench for the patio (less wood to rack if you actually build something out of it, lol). We were going for the unfinished "rustic" look for the bench... Or so I thought. Dad went a little nuts with the sander and what was left over was some pretty fine looking hard maple, nice grain... We now must plane down the top and finish the bench to a more polished appearance.
6c60398c08aea0a3ad66a7d09bcb9852.jpg

Legs are 3×5 maple (hard enough to finish off my already fairly dull kreg bit) top is 2-3/4" rough cut pine.

We'll run the top through the planer tomorrow and I'll go out to grab a new bit and some screws as I've got about 32 more holes to drill before the project is completed.

Cheers folks!

I have a two car garage, a small space, I tried to find room to be able to creatively store things. Today I made brackets for being able to put the legs of a cherry picker engine hoist up between the two front single-car overhead garage doors. It turned out okay, it's in there solidly, I don't think I have to worry about the pieces coming down.

I used the overhead garage door tracks and screwed two-by's in between the left and the right inside garage door tracks and then made wood brackets to hang the feet of the cherry picker legs/feet off the brackets.

I don't use my cherry picker that often so this storage will do well for me to get the stuff off the floor out of the way and allow me to have safe storage of it.

The bottom of the cherry picker legs fit into square wood pockets and at the top there is a rabbeted two-by-four that has a half inch all thread which allows the two-by-four to pivot 90° to be able to unload the legs. No tools are needed to be able to load the legs and lock them in place, or to remove them.

I cannot load pictures tonight I keep getting a code that says security token has expired. I tried several times to upload the pictures. I'm going to stop, I haven't been able to do it. Maybe tomorrow it will work better.

Ok I re-entered and had to load the pics 1 at a time, what a pain in the ****.

I changed the oil in my '06 325i. I had the jump the battery yesterday so I planned on picking up a new one. Then I saw that you have to register the battery for the BMW Intelligent Battery System !?!. It ended up being less hassle to just pay ATU (the local version of Auto Zone, Pep Boys, etc) the $30 in labor to swap it out and reprogram the computer. As a DIYer with mainly older cars, I never thought I would get to the point where I couldn't change a simple battery. It's not cost effective to buy the program and code reader for this car since it's already 12 years old and likely won't outlive the battery with the strict German TUV inspections.

Hosted our annual Pinewood Derby Workshop this year in the shop. Got the mezzanine done just in time and came in handy so that the families could design the cars up top then come downstairs to use the tools. I worked on finishing it up all week and was stressful. It made it all worth it hearing the compliments and watching everyone work on their cars. 5b7c8348547b1fa8d04d546a7565d290.jpg3690f0defb3e9ec239804a934dc49b9e.jpga8fc1529377f8c93ce07629271336170.jpg8d608f7379f95c7bda19b90063287639.jpgb3ed646982d5046582bc71c8715800a6.jpgdb67476171b60113fac2900be3d0c2ff.jpgd0844d2372b5173dfe95b427175e230e.jpg

Taking apart an older CMan 4"x36" Belt/Disc sander that I acquired in a partial trade... It is filthy, filthy, filthy!!! It's missing parts, most notable the table and belt cover, but it is a cast-iron base and 2/3HP motor...

Bearings in the rear roller were shot, surprising enough I was able to find some better than original ones at Fastenal for like $1.50 each. The bushings in the front roller were okay.

Going to check capacitor, it was having trouble sometimes getting things turning initially. I think it was probably due to the belt bearings though. Motor spins smooth. We'll see....

Not going to dump a ton of money into this old thing, too many parts are discontinued and the others are overpriced on SPD... Hopefully it will run okay though and I can use it until I find something better...

Oh yeah, apparently the guy had a problem with the disc not sticking, so he used JB Weld! Argh...

That's AWESOME that you hosted that! Many years ago I helped build the track, and I assembled a computer for the electronic timing we bought. We told the parents if they wanted to build a car, We would have "open competition" for the parents, separate from the boys cars. (urging them to let the boys design and build their own -Help teach them, sure, but let them build it...) It was fun both ways.

Pulled the wheels so I could check the brake pads and rotors. I noticed my 28 year old MX5 is still riding on OEM shocks.

After a quick trip into Sarnia to buy a new drill bit and some screws to finish the bench, we finally finished the bench. 5f6257d2ae1de4aa864ddb4f72f3c20b.jpg
Also put some use to a few other items that were taking up space in the garage, because you know, free is always a good price.
3acf1f65948679725a57132a987e8613.jpg
The material is spare canvas from a friend's tent trailer that I believe was left over once they replaced some of the other panels. Simply cut it to length/width, screwed it in to the bench frame rail and weighted the bottom with some spare stock we had to keep things relatively taunt.

That's all for now, folks.

Took out the plasma cutter and cut the feet for the welding table and said screw it and cut the holes for the wheels with the plasma cutter too. Welded the feet on and bolted the wheels on. Pop riveted the gang box on one of the legs and wired it up and couldnt find the Damn recepticle cover.

Also ripped a lot of *** in my bibs and Damn near choked myself out.

I re-furb’d this old Grinnnell Automatic Sprinkler Alarm today. I was able to buy it from the proprietor of the original Old Crow Distillery in Frankfort, KY last year. For those who don’t know, OCD was a major player in the early days of distilling spirits and the property is now owned and named Glenn’s Creek Distillery. If you’re ever in the area-schedule a visit and see the massive undertaking the venture is to get segments of the property accessible and partly operable. Anyway-here are the pictures. Just gotta get a brass or stainless Acorn nut for the center and hang it up. For reference-it’s about 18” across and 70lbs..

Your wall alarm looks great, put a speaker in there, and use it to broadcast your own 'alarms' or maybe hook it to your landline so it 'goes-off' when someone calls.

I have a bunch of brass and copper soda-acid extinguisher tanks, just waiting for being worked-on. I may leave the patina, and just clean them well.

Just tidying up as garbage day tomorrow.

Shop is done short of the air lines ran around perimeter so Focus has shifted back to the basement development. Third bedroom got emptied and now is getting 6 outlets, LED **** light and short LED strip in the double deep closet which will be on an occupancy switch.

I think that's what's known as a Water Motor Gong. Mounts on wall on outside of building where sprinkler system riser is inside. Plumbed into the riser, water flow rings bell.

Clean up and repaint looks really nice!

Shop is done short of the air lines ran around perimeter so Focus has shifted back to the basement development. Third bedroom got emptied and now is getting 6 outlets, LED **** light and short LED strip in the double deep closet which will be on an occupancy switch.

An LED **** light?

Pretty much spent the day listening to top gear and road kill and cleaning and rearranging the garage. Just the work bench and a pile of stuff to go through

I think that's what's known as a Water Motor Gong. Mounts on wall on outside of building where sprinkler system riser is inside. Plumbed into the riser, water flow rings bell.

Clean up and repaint looks really nice!

John

Yep. Also referred to as a "water motor-operated alarm" NFPA 13, 8.17.1.1: Local Waterflow Alarms A local waterflow alarm shall be provided on every system having more-than 20 sprinklers.

8.17.1.5.1: For all types of sprinkler systems employing water motor-operated alarms, a listed 3/4 inch strainer shall be installed at the alarm outlet of the waterflow detecting device.

Broke my cordless drill by accident...

Waited for a parts order but never got notification it was ready for pick up...

Decided it was best to do as little as possible to prevent breaking anything else or personal injury...

From..

Oh-and I hung up all of my old plates-well almost all of them.

I sure wish I knew people collected them, as a sprinkler fitter, I’ve thrown many of them in the dumpster.

More of late into the night last night than today, but some work done on it today. Long list of small time consuming stuff to do to it.

Not really in my garage but didn't want to create a whole new thread...

Just got home from running errands. Went out back to set a mole trap I bought and one of my neighbors caddy-corner to me asks if I can come over to help her. I asked if she could give me a few minutes and she tells me her husband fell down and she can't get him back up! :eyecrazy: So I said I'll be right over! I drop everything and go running around the block!

Poor guy she said he was laying there outside on the porch for over an hour! Thankfully it was a warm day today (72F) so at least he wasn't freezing out there. He's 92 I think (and still drives is the scary part)! We got him up into a chair and he had a pretty good scrape on his head but it didn't look like he would need any stitches. She said didn't see any neighbors cars around and didn't think anyone was home to help. :(

We are literally in eyesight of the local fire station, it's about 2 blocks down the street and one block over. I don't know why she didn't call them or drive over there sooner. I guess some people are stubborn. :dunno:

... and I thought catching a mole was going to be the exciting part of my day!

Now off to go set that mole trap...

Maybe she didn't think it was urgent enough to bother them...or she may have been embarrassed to have them come over for something so simple.
Glad you came along when you did, though. Good on ya!

After twenty years of BS luck and not getting hurt by flying stuff, I called MAKITA to see if I could buy a guard for my GA7910 grinder. They stock that part and many other bits and pieces. They sent the guard to a local Makita repair shop and I picked it up just after lunch.
It too longer to clean the mounting place on the grinder than it took to mount the guard.
I am a dumb *** for not having the guard years ago. Two years ago I was custom grinding a high-speed tool for my lathe. I left the BALDOR grinder running while I test fit the tool bit. Very suddenly and without warning the new green grindstone split but remained inside the heavy cast-iron Baldor guard. The grinder stalled but did not sustain any damage.
This is the only Makita I own, all of the other power tools are Milwaukee.

I will probably regret this;

I have a Husqy lawn mower with the tuff torq k46 axle (the one that doesn't last). It has a minor problem at this point, and I can overhaul it for $500, replace it for $650. Instead, I bought a different transaxle from surpluscenter for $275. It came in last night. So let's see how far I have to go to get that to work.

I've got a handful of old fire alarm system components. The sprinkler bells I have are the typical 120v 8" and 10". I should have snagged some water flow switches too. Could have rigged up something for the nephews and nieces to play with. I still might get some pressure switches...
I do have an old pull station I grabbed out of a hospital. It has the whole ratcheting mechanism inside. Looks like an EST 270-SPO on steroids!

While I have my ranger's valve cover off figured I'd paint it.

I already had VHT engine enamel burnt copper from what I had planned on painting my AMG calipers but decided against it. Figured use up the can since I won't use this color for anything.

I should have taken before pics. Just your standard aluminum. Turned out nice. In the oven curing.
