Hand vise for holding small parts like JP said. Probably before vise grips to hold parts against a grinder, sander or buffer...

I agree with you. No "normal" person needs a C3. So I sold my C3 and bought a C2! LOL But who on this thread is "normal"?:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

C2 is a damn good size but honestly I like my c1 the best. The c3 is so big it won’t get used much. Price was fair for the work that needs done. Only reason I picked it up. The c2 will more than likely venture down the road. No sense in hoarding vises like some do. Lol

Anyone know what this little baby vise is? My grandfather gave it to me today and he wasn't sure exactly what it is. It has "No 3" marked on it.79dc33291b6b98429ea2cfa09ceb7e89.jpg77e133513e1158f23b6951bc8e6b1486.jpg3689e1a60622704288812866f71667f3.jpgc954ee193166df34bc5ca4dbc2d9bbaa.jpg

When I was growing up we just called it a hand vise. Never saw a makers mark on any of them. I use them for small parts hand work, like grinding and polishing.

Huge haul today at the auction, yes, the wilton gets to ride in the cab, while everyone else sits in the back 9b7525427985d4bd31fb214b38d3f251.jpg3231b600fa08f7f0eb9d109c75a02f92.jpg

Hitthewall, is the dynamic jaw support missing from the rock island? Hard to tell from the pictures.

From what I've been told it is, however I think it will still make a very solid stationary for someone. Thing is a beast though, and is very heavy

Picked up my first Wilton today, a C2 I think (it's a 4" bullet). Came bolted to an old steel work bench and cost me $150. I think I got a decent deal as it appears to be in good shape.

This is the best picture I have at the moment. It's still bolted to the bench top and in the bed of my truck. I'll take some more tomorrow once I get it in the garage.

PT --- That is a Wilton Machinist Vise...

They are the ne plus ultra of the Wilton World...

And are much more expensive...

It is an "S" model, meaning it is a "Swivlin' B@#tard"...

Measure the width of the jaws to tell what you have...

i.e....4 inch jaws --- a 400S, 5 inch jaws --- a 500S...

See photo for the inner workings of a Wilton S series machinist vise...

Oldldh says it like it is! ^^^^^^^^^^^

Drives: C1 = 4 1/2 inch wide jaws

Pt: Most all of us would pay $150 for that vise without a bench.

Meatsis:. Great haul! Interesting little post mount there...any markings?

Thanks you guys for the info. I'll get it on the bench and dusted off tomorrow and get a better look at it. I was so excited to get one I barely looked at it!

Unruh: you're right cause those old Craftsman vises made by Rock Island and Reed are on my radar, but Rusty's good eyes saved us both a trip. just to let you know i'd emailed the guy last week for more pictures and he never returned my email so guessing he knows it's broken too. it's also a little on the small side so i'm not really needing any more vises that size.

here's a picture of Jeremy's Craftsman 5186 so you can see what the bottom support should look like

Speaking of classic Craftsmans, here is a pic of the one I brought home this week... a 5197, the second to the largest from their “Industrial” series the maker of which is still being debated amongst a few GJ vise aficionados.

It was the result of some long distance (415 mile) horse trading that I came to own this one, very nicely restored by loydski29.

That is for sure one good looking vise and expertly restored. What an eye candy
Ps
A question to the bible scholars among us here, is lusting after thy GJ neighbor’s vise a sin?

007: Thanks for the compliment.
I am not qualified to absolve you of all of your sins, but I will say that good trades are made up of a little bit of coveting on both sides. Somehow balance that out and you’ve got a deal!

I am afraid there are several mysteries in American history that will never be solved, JFK assassination, Amelia Earhart disappearance, and who made the 5197 craftsman:bounce: and for us at GJ, the one that really matters is the later one.

Gman, lust is lust, whether it be for a man's vise or his wife.---One might actually result in a trade of sorts and one will get you kilt.---But which one you ask?:headscrat

The subject of lust was clearly stated as the vise but you have a good point, what if the wife has whole bunch of good looking vises? :dunno: now you have complicated the situation even more :lol_hitti

Liz and VA She would not even know what to list the vises under to sell them! Once sometime back she asked me exactly what the heck is a vise used for that I need so many of anyway! I said they are like a exceptionally strong super human extra helping hands to hold a piece. She said that sounds useful but exactly how many super human helping hands does a man need to work on a SINGLE piece at a time? All I could muster to say was this is a man thing and something a woman would not understand even if I explained :D.

I am inclined to think that one day she might pay to have them hauled away as junk rather than sell them at supposed “face value” :lol_hitti

Man I want to go to an auction like that. You must have been the only vise buyer there. So you're going to have to divulge.... how much coin did you drop at the auction?

No, I wasn't, I had a few fights on some stuff, there were more vises that I didn't get, and some huge vises that just went out of my price range. All and all I spent around 530

Always interesting see vises owned by others - while visiting Joannes brothers house today - saw the family vise (her Fathers) - Craftsman 506-51811. Used, not abused, jaw inserts a little loose.

Did somebody REALLY sell this vise (looks to me like a big Prentiss double swiveller) for FIFTY BUCKS this morning?
Did one of my fellow Bay Area GJers bag this unbelievable “you ****” deal?
Why did I waste my time picking local garage sales instead of sitting in a chair checking offer up and Craigslist every 10 minutes all day long? :)

A wise man once said you can have good quality, cheap, or fast. Just not all 3 together.
A GJ member if I recall...just can’t remember the name. :dunno:

Shift: thanks for reminding me that the Wilton C1 has a 4.5 inch wide jaw cause i thought it did and was having maybe a Senior moment. i also don't own one any more even though I think i had 3 or 4 at one time.

just say to yourself that you CAN'T BUY THEM ALL and to make you feel better assume since that old prentiss swivel jaw was on a made in China stand that the slide was cracked and the jaw was frozen and it was fairly small even though it looks PRISTINE.

Hit: i call that old Montgomery Wards vise the IRON or IRONING BOARD vise and it's not very rare or a great vise, but it is unique. how are the jaws on that little Rock Island? was it just a bad picture you posted before or was there a chunk out of the dynamic jaw? looks like you managed to wrestle a few old vises and things out of that auction.

ALL: interesting relationship and vise chatter that's going on and i'm just reading and smiling so carry on!!

Thanks for the rationalization Drives

I missed out on the big Prentiss double swiveller.

So I settled for a different Prentiss that I DID find by prowling Craigslist.

Here is the picture from the ad. It is now safely in my possession so I can post it. I have seen GJ noobies post CL ads asking if they should buy something. That’s a dangerous move. Deals get swooped that way.
I Just got home. Will clean it up later.

Prentiss Monarch 401
The pipe jaws and the bottom “wing nut” are all there!
The post threads ( 5/8 - 11) are undamaged. After just a touch of oil, the heavy wing nut spins up and down with one finger. Amazing for a 100 year old vise. Paid $75

Good looking old through the bench Monarch. Someday I want to own one solely because I dig the lions head.

If it makes you feel better Shift I saw a 6" Athol on Offerup this morning near where my family lives in Socal. Looked like a 626 in good condition. It was listed for $150 and marked sold already.
