The first new vise I ever bought was a Craftsman 51856 6" about 20 years ago. I thought it was really nice at the time. It was mounted where the 500S is now and I used it a few weeks ago and although it clamped just fine, it moved so crappy compared to the Wiltons I had, so I started searching for a replacement.
In my searches, I noticed the Amazon pricing algorithm was dropping the price of the 600N by about 5% per day, so I sat back and watched the inventory. When it hit $495, the inventory dropped by 1 unit (someone else bought one) so I jumped in and bought one as well for $495. It went back to almost $1000 a few minutes later. The next day it started dropping again...
When the vise arrived, FedEx refused to deliver it with the tracking info only saying "improper packaging". I drove to the Fedex Depot and found a vise with no box and a shipping label taped to the base. I assume it broke out of the Amazon box somewhere along the way. The dust cap was dented and it was generally rough. I refused shipment and Amazon sent a replacement. (When Amazon sent the replacement, the price stopped dropping and went back up again)
The replacement came in a box, but with a bent handle and lightly dented dust cap. I complained to Amazon and told them it really needed a pallet, not a carboard box and sent them pics. They offered $100 off bringing the total to $400, or to send another replacement. I called Wilton and asked what to do since I was trying to buy a vise from Amazon, but they couldn't figure out how to ship it properly. Wilton was super nice, and said if it was purchased new and damaged in transit they would send replacement parts. I gave them a copy of the receipt and pics and they sent out a new handle assembly and a dust cap. I replaced the handle and straightened out the old dust cap since the new one was unpainted. If anyone needs a 600 handle assembly that is slightly bent or a brand new 600 dust cap, let me know.
I bought a swivel base from eBay for the 600, and put the 600 where the 500 used to be and put the 500 where the Craftsman 6" used to be.
I do still have a few open bench corners...
