Hi Don,

That’s what I’m talking about. If I had to guess, your 13mm x 15mm wrench was probably manufactured before your 22mm x 24mm wrench. I’m basing that on the appearance of the shanks, but that’s not science or numbers confirmed. I never really measured various wrenches from different eras to determine if that’s true or not. It’s just my impression/observation. I also failed to mention, that along with thinner shanks, the actual walls (for lack of a better term) of the boxes on earlier wrenches also seemed to be thinner or less substantial. I guess the only way to show you what I mean is to post a picture or two. I’ll try to do that tonight if time permits.

Jim C.
Thanks. Pictures are always appreciated. I think I'm starting to get it. Here are some -V- metric DBE wrenches.

FF, if that is the three drawer 20" "machinists" chest, I have one of those waterloo boxes.

Jim, Thx for jumping in with the details! Knowing Sears/Craftsman NOTHING is an absolute for determining years, But as you noted, you can usually get within a year or so of the start/stop years...

Jim, I was adding your comments to my notes, and 67/68 was also about when the change from Moore Drop forge to Easco happened. Interesting that Both A's were used on =V= and -V-...

Wait a minute Outlaw..... maybe I didn’t present my opinion clearly and I don’t want you working from faulty info. I’m sorry about that. Let me try it again:

All pointed A tools were produced with a double line (=V=) manufacturer’s mark. I think the pointed A was stamped on tools until about 1967 or so. Some flat top A tools were produced with a double line (=V=) manufacturer’s mark, and some were produced with a single line (-V-) manufacturer’s mark. I’m not aware of any pointed A tools that had a single line (-V-) manufacturer’s mark. So the flat top A was used with both (=V= and -V-) but the pointed A was only used with =V=.

Your right. I need to not post on markings (or at least double check) after a LONG day at work...

My examples a page back are as you said...

Okay Don,

Notice the two wrenches below. Both are 12mm x 14mm with a double line (=V=) manufacturer's mark, but also pay close attention to the shanks on both wrenches. The wrench on the bottom has a pointed A. See how much thinner the shank is as compared to the wrench on the top with the flat top A? Generally speaking it's been my observation that the pointed A wrenches (DBE, DOE and combos) all have thinner shanks in comparison to their flat top A counterparts even though both have a double line (=V=) mark. Also the shape of the DOE wrench heads on pointed A versions (pre 1967ish) is noticeably different than the flat top A versions that came later.

I'm only in town for another day but I may go pull it out too.

Let me know if you pull it out. I’m always looking to add to what I have if you’re interested in selling, but just seeing the older stuff is exciting.

It's out, post 8894. Can't tell from the post but it's a three drawer. Cheers!

Created a topic, but forgot to post it here.

1955 Snap On KR-56

Got off Craigslist for 40$. A lot of dents, dirt, scratches and missing paint. You could not touch it without hands getting black when I brought it home. Slowly cleaning up, taking off the glue from the stickers, fixed several dents.
Was recommended to polish with compound and preserve as is (thank you for advise). However, I sometimes feel that there is a chance that I will try to sand and respray it once it gets warmer...

Picked up a home made / shop made wood machinist chest the other week.
Look like it was made from plans out of a handyman's magazine (WAG) based on the construction: lack of box joints, wood trim drawer pulls.
Nicely made box overall, although the rear panel cracked all the way across.
So a little refinishing and new hardware and I put it out on CL.
Quick fun little project.

Tool box day today. Picked up the Kennedy for $5 at the first estate sale. The next one had three boxes on a bench. $25 each. I have pictures of the Par-X and the Duplex. The SnapOn KRA 58c is still in the car. For $80 I got the three boxes and contents. The Kennedy has fishing stuff in it.

First post here, be gentle!
Purchased a MBCentury top box today, 10 draws, (6off 1/3rd width, 4off full width). 31" W, 18"D. With keys, $60USD. Exterior has worn paint, plus a few "don't think about borrowing my tools" stickers. Interior is bright and shiny, as if unused. If I could work out how to post photos, I would. Help please! A few months ago $10USD, got m a 18"W X 15"D top box Hough, looks great from 3m.

I don't think that is shop made. I see a little square that was probably a makers mark, and many of the old cases (no top compartment makes it a case) don't have box joints. No idea who could have made it though.

Posting pics 101:

Start from the "Go Advanced" posting menus, or the "Post Reply" button near the bottom of any page, (Or hit the "paperclip" button to get to the upload popup); and at step 5 copy it into the URL field after hitting the "postcard" button: (Step 4/5 is optional; you will still have thumbnails)

Yeah I saw the square when a mark likely was, but the drawer pulls just looked non professional. There was one old nickel plated drawer pull on it that might have been original, I just dont know. It just didnt seem that old.

I have been playing with these boxes for a couple of years now, and just learned the chest / case difference within the last week!!

RJ: thanks for posting and welcome to GJ. nice looking boxes. I think you meant to say your little blueish color box is a HUOT and i love their old boxes.

MBC used to make Snap on boxes in case you didn't know so it's a quality box too.

that old ROYAL NAVY box is cool and where are you located? Europe? can you go in your GJ profile and put in your location and you might find it helps when asking questions to get better answers. also click on AVATAR and download one of your favorite pics so you can have it show up under your new RJ handle.

i just pulled out a BEAST OF A TOOLBOX out of storage that is built sort of like your dad's old box. mine has 3 boxes inside it sort of like those old Chinese egg dolls.

Dad was a Captain in the RN on landing craft in Singapore, box was a bit off topic, but thought it close enough. Not bad Nick, considering kept in the open of the LC. Contained everything needed to keep the thing running, tools and spares. Dad would never mention how he kept the boxes, once captured in Burma. Just that was the only belongings he was allowed. Quite a nasty place at that time. He finally got home in 46, with boxes, sans tools and parts.

Unfortunately, my main issue is not fixed. I use Tapatalk on my phone to access GJ, but it stopped working for me since the server upgrade. Right now, I'm working around the issue by using my phone's web browser to access GJ, but it uses up my data so I have to use it sparingly.

Riley: i'm not sure if you are a senior yet, but Tmobile has a 2 line rate with all you can eat data plan for $60 per month if you and maybe your brother want to be on the same plan.

ALL: anybody have a favorite chemical or wax to use on metal to metal slides without rollers other than beeswax? and will it work on wood and or metal?

That explains your diminished access recently. Good luck with getting the problems resolved. We miss your presence here. Hopefully when you get back full bore we'll get bombarded with all the new gray & red and other things you've added to your stash! :pimpflash
