Moose Presents A World First!

As a way to say thank you to DaMaN for helping me ship all my tools, i asked him what kind of handles he prefered, so i could transplant one onto a THL72 for him. He told me that he likes Snap-on hard red Instinct handles, so i set to work!

I started out with a SHDP301. (Mini tip No. 1 Phillips.)

Out came the shank.

The handle was then drilled out to 7mm, and was drilled 62mm deep to accomodate the ratchet's metal shaft.

New handle vs. old.

I then wrapped cardboard around the upper part of the ratchet handle to protect it, and clamped it in the vice. With a wrench (10mm) and a prybar the old handle was gently removed.

Handle off, new one ready to be fitted.

A quick few taps from a nylon hammer and the world's first (Recorded, as far as i can tell.) Instinct hard handle ratchet is born!

Yep, i've swapped out a few that just didn't want to come off, so i either forced them off or cut them off. They were being swapped anyway so it didn't matter. This one came off nice and easy.

I guess it'll be added to the pile of spares when i pull all the other shanks out my donor handles. I'll either keep them as spares or make things out of them.

Slip the ring end of a wrench over the shank. You'll need to find one where the ring end is as close to the diameter of the round "recess" on the handle that's around where the shank goes in. (this prevents leaving marks, and if it does leave a mark it won't really show.) Then clamp the shank in a vice, wrap something around the shank (Like a cloth or some cardboard.) to prevent marking it. then gently lever against the wrench with a prybar to pull the handle.

I'll make a proper tutorial soon when i swap over another one.

I think one of our former SO Guys once said that he puts the driver in a vise and puts the open end of a wrench over the shank, then hits it with a hammer.. I suppose that might leave a mark however.

I use an open-end for ratchets and things you can't use a ring-end on. But using a hammer would leave a mark.

I'm assuming the 7mm provides a tight interference fit, correct?

Nope, 7mm is the diameter of the ratchet shank. Still a tight fit, the "wing tabs" on the shank are what hold the handle in place.

So you're saying the handle slides on fairly easy until it gets to the wings then, huh?

+1. The last soft grip ratchet handle I swapped out for a hard handle was a real mother. I ended up butchering it with a utility knife until I got down to the chrome shank.

I don't think so, the fit alone is somewhat tight, but you can't pull it off once it's pressed on. You need to put it in the vice and pry it off.

You need to give it a decent shove to get it on, then you need to whack it on with a plastic hammer to seat it properly over the wing tabs.

For the th737 I used the same handle you did. For th shlf80 I used the handle off of my phillips #4 that I never use.

Oh, I just realized that you meant how I like them. It really shines using it on the roto ratchet when its being used like a nut driver. Also nice on the big one since the grip is now bigger and more comfortable,

What size is the shank of the SLF80? I have an SHF80 with a soft grip that's being swapped for a hard handle, i feel the need to buy a reduced-shank drill bit for the 1/2" ratchets.

You need a long bit when drilling out the big instinct handle, and I believe it was a 1/2", I will double check at work tomorrow.

Looks good. When I did mine, it was the opposite, as I was making the ratchet fit the handle, but I did it with a .010" interference fit on the 1/4" and 3/8", and .005" on the 1/2". They didn't have the wings like the ratchets that come with the handles, though. They won't be coming off without destruction, the 1/2" one took a 2.5 lb rubber mallet at full bore to go on.

I've never not been able to get the handles off a ratchet that came with them, though.
