Arm and Hammer Anvil

Arm & Hammer anvils were made from wrought iron with tool steel tops and they have very good rebound. I have a 150 lb one that I recently paid $375 for which was a very good deal where I live. It has a 90 percent rebound. Sales prices will vary according to location. Check in over at iforgeiron.com, you will get a lot of replies with guidance but people will be reluctant to give a price as like I said price is location dependent.
Although not a Peter Wright, the A&H is highly regarded and should bring a higher price than other less desirable brands. They are not as refined looking as some other brands of lower quality but don't let that fool you, the quality is there. Look for a serial number on the front of the base near the bottom.
There is another anvil called a Vulcan that has a arm and hammer logo on it but has nothing to do with the Arm & Hammer company and is not anywhere near the same quality. (see pic)
If you have a true A&H, in my area anyway, I would price it at $3.50 to$4 per lb to start. Just because it's a great anvil. And people are paying it.

Vulcans have a logo that sticks out, evidence of being cast, and are very very prone to chipping on the edges. If the logo is stamped in, it's an Arm&Hammer.

Thanks for the info guys. And of course it is for sale. I purchased a welding room at the Rockford Products auction in rockford and the anvil was in the corner. I always come to this site for good information on old equipment but was having a hard time finding a price comparison, so i finally joined the group to talk with all you fine folk. Thanks again. No but it makes me wonder the circumstances, it would be nice if the poster would tell us how he came into the anvil, is it a family hand me down, a storage locker buyout, stolen??
I mean that's the only payment we get for our time and advice! The backdrop to the photo is a bit odd.bigb56

Arm & Hammers were made in Columbus, Ohio, same place as the famous Trenton anvils were made. If you hold a tape measure and drop a 1/2 or 3/4" ball bearing from 10" that will tell you the rebound. A true A&H should rebound 90% all over the face, or pretty close. Good rebound is an important selling quality.

yep, I was born in Woodstock (IL) and lived in Crystal Lake for 13 years.
With the serial number an approximate year of manufacture can be looked up.
