Went to one estate sale today specifically to buy this:

1543057efcd7a546acc83da1077bf1e3.jpg

I got there later in the day and was surprised to see it was still there but someone pulled off the quench tray and it was no where to be found. I’m guessing someone purchased it separately. Grinder was was marked $50 and they would have taken less but I didn’t want it without the tray. Argh!

So I gathered a 5 gallon bucket of stuff. They asked $20 and I countered $15. They came back at $17 and cash was handed over.

Mattblast I can't believe you passed on the grinder! You can get a water cup but those nice glass eyeshields are hard to find!

Neither one, Dave. Just "Lufkin MADE IN U.S.A." Does that mean something in terms of age? There's no model number on it, either. I have a 1942 Lufkin catalog, which I plan to consult later. The business part of the T is a brass plate, if that helps. I don't normally collect carpenters' tools and I know nothing about these. Total impulse buy. See thumbnails.

According to
http://www.roseantiquetools.com/id92.html

Lufkin Rule founded in 1869 in Cleveland by one Edward T. Lufkin, a Civil War veteran. HQ moved to Saginaw in 1890, Cleveland works closes by 1892.

I have seen only a few Lufkin tools marked Cleveland, mostly log scales. I have a full page Lufkin ad that came in an industrial catalog of some kind, that shows the Cleveland address.

According to the timeline, machinist tools weren't added until 1919, so they should all be Saginaw.

Wow, the hauls are heating up with the weather. Loved the old Delta grinder and BB's Wilton steal.

Answered a CL ad after work yesterday and finally scored a block grinder. It's a basic 1/3 hp model (no light or tray) but this thing is mint. Glass is perfect, runs as smooth as silk and has what have to be the original wheels. Date on bottom is 67. PO said it belonged to his late FIL who bought new tools every paycheck but hardly used them. Only defects are couple dings in the finish and the FIL's name and ssn on top. I bought this to use, so I don't really mind. Not a steal at $60, but I needed a new grinder.

Hit an estate sale for his morning. Most of the USA handtools were priced at $3 ea but I looked down and saw this basket with a $4 tag on it.
25578b08132db5afa9d9441153fd7358.jpg
Snagged that and. 25' 12ga extension co d for another $4.
Contents of $4 basket
cf2d90aaed127a6e548ec474164ff5c6.jpg
Highlights include unused USA CM hose clamp pliers, Klein strippers, Crescent compound pliers, English made lineman's pliers, Petersen vice grips, etc. Not shown are a USA Lufkin 16' tape and 2 B&D 12" high speed steel bits.

Quick trip to the flea netted a complete OTC double flaring kit for $5, Irwin vice grips, SK Metric line wrenches, large Proto DOE's, safety giggles, CM 1/2" extension and a few super clean 3/8 Indestro Supers to round out the top of a set that I'm building. $35

You guys are killing it! I had a Good/Bad day...

It started bad as I hit a sale on opening, and they had opened early, and the Effing reselling scavengers had cleaned house... I missed on an early large fixed base REED, as well as a couple of early Coleman lanterns one in a tin case... Just to really piss me off...

All I got were leavings... Not bad for leavings, but leavings none the less...

Craftsman Saltus wrench and Torx driver set from T10-T27 (dupe T10), LONG wood handle driver, small BluePoint DOE, Small Williams Spud wrench (good size for the welding/fab bench), Victor Tank wrench (Also heading for welding), Indestro Drak link driver, Yankee, driver, (Not a trace of plating all brass, shell, and a apt. date of Dec 11, 23, so possibly pre Dec 7? Plating materials restricted but Brass not so much? :dunno:, the Odd DOE marked "ROME Vanaduim" with SAE (large) size makings (as does the Spud wrench), and an odd centering device - No clue on this one...

attachment.php

A German helmet! It has a rust hole and was probably buried. its condition isn't great and may been WWI? The only clue are the two pins on the outside. have to do some Googleing...

attachment.php

Hidden hinges (Austria) and these have a brake for shutting, so NO slamming these!

SS Tray

Old Coleman mantles and the top for the tin & lantern I missed on... :pimpflash I offered to buy the lantern in the tin, he said "No!" and left. So I bought this...

A second Carpnters box:

attachment.php

Some of the stuff from the boxes; the hammer handle is Vaughn, and has perfect grain!, Lathe tool handle, The lufkin is a carboard chart for NC. tap/drill sizes from 1/4 to 2". Bridgeport Wood handle driver

attachment.php

Putting the tray to use: the remainder of the usable contents of the boxes. several odd/orphan hinges, the yellow one is heavy brass and I'l have to find a use for that... Other wise, brass hardware, drills of various kinds, yankee adn bit brace bits, mixed bag...

attachment.php

All for $20, I was into it for ten and then asked about the boxes while they got change, and they were good for keeping the change and selling the boxes.

Lastly one other stop (been there several times over the years), for a fiver, a licorice power (laxative?) tin and the orange tin is old points and condenser from Sears under a "Cross Country" branding.. two glass stoppers, 2 SK sockets.

Been a long time since I’ve found anything worth posting, but today was a pretty good day at the 2 Estate Sales I found.
...Can’t believe I found a piece of Craftsman amber!

Very nice haul Jammer! I've never even seen or heard of the Craftsman amber. What are the years this stuff was available. That is really cool! What is the story on those nails? You picked up a bunch of nice stuff today! Congrats!

Late this morning I went by a small woodworking shop that was closing. He opened his shop at 11am. I didn't expect to buy any machinery. Kind of looking for small stuff, maybe hand tools. He didn't really have any he was selling but I picked up a few things. I was there 30-45 minutes and no one else showed up. I really didn't see anything I needed but kind of felt like I couldn't leave without buying something. I picked up the 2 casters for a buck. $1 each for the clamps. The Nabisco Animal Cookies ad sign was 50 cents and he threw in a block of walnut to make it an even $6. The sign turns out to be made by Ande Rooney out of NY. There's a paper label on the back detailing the sign and maker. I see they sell for $20-$30 on ebay. Not a bad pickup. It'll go on the shop wall.

The helmet appears to be the common M35 German helmet, probably the most common variant.

Nothing on the wrench - Sorry for the typo on Rome: it's "ROME" (not Roma..) It has a Forged CV (Chrome Vanadium?) inside a circle. SAE 7/6 (5/8) on one end, SAE 1/2 (3/4). Secondary markings roll of the edge of the back. Pat. App. For on the back of the 7/16 end, and 2729...

I noticed Boofer's grinder looks like the same model as the one mattblast passed on - and it's missing the tray too.

Ahh. Looks like a modified Bonney.

I see some scuffs in front of the "ROME" that makes it look to me like there was originally a "CH" there (thus spelling "CHROME" as usual), lost in whatever bizarre transformation that thing underwent. ;)

Ditto. My reply to Outlaw, including a catalog excerpt of an original right-angle wrench, on the DOE wrenches thread, is here.

3Bay, the 2729 number ties back to Bonney (or is that just size in 32nds? Nope, they are odd numbers...); but while it has a couple of grind marks on it, I'm certain the heads were forged as we see them, (at first I wondered if someone had welded this thing up) and the shank was not ground to that shape.

Confirmed on the CH ground off.

Whoever modified this was good. Hardly a grind mark shows, unless you get a magnifier on it.

Outlawmws: The "2" in "2729" is the model number (2XXX) for right-angle wrenches. The "729" is the ISN for a wrench with 5/8 x 3/4 openings. The series went from 2721 (5/16 x 3/8) to 2033 (7/8 x 31/32). By the way, that thing is cool as hell as a novelty!

No hidden message there, just thought it was an interesting coincidence. And kinda surprised Matt passed up his just for that. :)

Agreed. I obviously paid more for less. My grinder still has the knockouts for the tray and light so it was sold sans both.

Oddly enough, I went to an estate sale last weekend and the guy said I had just missed a bench grinder. I ended up buying the contents of two garage cabinets for $30 (anyone need 4 new cans of 3-in-1 oil?) And what do I find in one of my cabinets? The side guards for a block grinder. Doh!

So now I have two sets. If anyone needs a pair of 6" side guards pm me.

Oh, I forgot about this little long C craftsman Hammer head I picked up at the same sale. It says "Vanadium - AM" under the Craftsman logo. Is it 1930s or 1940s?

Been walking around this thing siting on the kitchen floor all day... one more thing I got at the Fist stop estate sale:

I love the play on words for the ad on the front! Nothing quite like tweaking the competitions nose!

That would be my guess. Not war years though, I don't think they let them use vanadium for other than essentials.

I found a spot for my new cabinet. But geez, it took me right about 4 hours and 24 minutes from when I rolled it into my shop until I had it set just the way I wanted it....

Here's a before picture when I first rolled it in.....

Here it is as soon as I called it done....

Went to another sale, this one a good 45 min. away, with the add showing some interesting old Craftsman. After that, I hit several thrift stores, junk shops, Restores and and an old dude who was 80 if a day, clearing out the yard and shop of his small engine and appliance repair business. Must of had 50 vintage lawn tractors in the yard, with outboards, vintage fridges and all kinds of cool old stuff inside. But he definately knew what things should be worth. So, over all I pick up the following:

That flare set was from the Estate sale and cost $20.

Picked that up from the old guy, Burt. It was $10

Hey all, great finds thus far in the year!!! I've been busy and haven't been to many sales but the ones I did get to did not have any tools to speak of, nothing I bought. I did score some new shocks for my truck on the cheap though. Good luck fellas!!

It started to ice, sleet, and snow Tuesday here in north central Texas. the day after it was 75 of course. I worked the last few days, so was kinda bummed to see that as all the ice melted off yesterday, rain was in the forecast for Friday and Sat! I decided I'd try the local small flea I always go to. ZERO... not a single person there... and it was 45 at the time I got there. Completely devastated and having TPW's ( tool picking withdralws) I decided I would head to the big Decatur swap meet. Its every 6 months but this is the bigger one. I usually find some neat stuff there amongst all the old car stuff. It was a mud pit.... Seriously. Barely made it in and out with my pickup. But, I did find a Littlestown vise on the first row of vendors. $5. Good start! I walk around and found a few more things. There were only about half the amount of people there because of the weather. But I think I came out ok for a total of $43.

Littlestown no 112 Vise $5
Columbian No 504 1/2 vise in good shape. $30

Indestro Super 6" & 8" adjustable wrenches
Plomb WF82, Early Tappet $5

Snap-On M44 9/32 speedster $3

RT that mud track reminds me of getting in and out of the dirt tracks in the early spring races... (And wheel packing the track when they are trying to drive the water in deep. that was always fun! Learned more about going sideways and actually controlling it wheel packing than anything else I ever did in a vehicle!)

It was actually fun getting in and out. I was a little worried more than once. But they had several big tractors pulling people out. :} Id would have liked to of has a Razor side by side out there today!

I went to a yard sale last weekend and purchased a box of misc tools to include these to.
This is my second set of both of these that I have found. Rich

Correct. 1930's to 1941. I've never seen that "AM" maker's code on anything but pliers before, though. Interesting. I wonder if that adds a clue. How many mfgr's making pliers made their own hammer heads?

Maybe they thought they needed to reduce it’s weight by just a, um, CH.
 I see what you did there - and without vulgarizing the thread! :)

Is that a pair of pliers with a wrench on the back end of one of the handles?? Wow, that is unusual! And to have found two of them! Perhaps they were made in your area? I see there are some markings but the photo is much too small to read anything... Who made it?
