Gman I’m glad to see the vise is intact as Morgan swivel jaw vises seem to be rather on the rare side. Here is a advert showing your 3 1/2 swivel base swivel jaw.

I’m moving my bench which is up against a wall where I used to store half of my vises. I’m going to build a shelving unit out of 2x10s I already have. I’m thinking only 4 foot wide. I have thought of a simple design but I would like to see what everybody else has built.
Can you guys post pictures of your vise shelves made from wood?

Bagged, here is my shelf solution. I was going for simplicity to make, inexpensive and quite strong. I did not put a backing as it wasn't for fancy display, and the open back allows space for longer vises.

Lower rows with bigger vises have 2x10's, upper rows with smaller vises I used 2x8's. Very utilitarian but it is strong, took maybe 15 minutes to put together. Pics aren't great but I think you get the jest of it.

The backside is connected to my shed wall so it won tip over and I used "L" or "T" bracket to make sure the supports won't move. Simple deck screws hold everything together as the weight is supported by the wood.

This isn't anything brilliant; I hope it helps

Shift: can you tell me (us) if your Morgan 335 actually has a 3rd mounting hole to be a swivel or non swiveler mounted vise? when i sent you the email letting you know I didn't think it was a American Scale cause they don't have #'s that big and that i thought it was a Morgan made more sense especially when Rusty posted his AWESOME Morgan with the bigger #.

the think that was throwing me off besides the terrible picture was the lack of enough letters to spell Morgan and the jaws that look like homemade aluminum. congrats on picking it up and are you going to maybe spiff it up and start building another shelving unit since it looks like you are full up already and this one looks like a KEEPER?

as i mentioned i think it's maybe late 1910's or 1920's, but i'm not certain on that and am willing to hear otherwise.

Rusty: thanks for the catalog pages!!

Meatsis: NICE WORK on 007's Craftsman!!

Current project: Bonney Farmer Vise #300 ?
Weight without the base + parts 13 lbs.
WIP; with non original parts 16 lbs.
3" jaws, hand cut striations.
At opening 4" the screw starts to disappear into the body.
Needs some more work, painted then mounted.
Only visible number is "S 3" on one of the badges,
anything on the other badge long hammered out.

On my Morgan 335, there is no “extra” hole for mounting without using the swivel base. There is only one hole... the one for the swivel lock.

akasrick: That's a fairly rare vise. Most Bonneys were clamp ons. The ad you attached evens tells you that it was painted a "bright maroon". It should look good when you're finished. Here's some information about Bonney Tools.

That's what I'm trying for. Paint will be "Mythical Maroon" Testors spray enamel.
Thank you for the Bonney info.

I picked this Prentiss #52 up today. Used the company car while working to save money. Guy said it was his Grandfathers and had been in his basement for the last 30 years waiting for me. Jaws have dirt and rust but look good.

That Prentiss looks like it was well cared for and not abused in any way. I would have been proud to have my grandpa’s vise. You’re lucky to find it. IIWY, I would clean and lubricate followed by a thin coat of Boiled Linseed Oil to keep the rust demons away.

Nice, found complete with a wingnut, Theres one on eBay with a square nut for the handle. no handle.
This one tightens good with a wrench.

akasrick

Is there some kind of mark on the vise?

akasrick

Akasrick Are you concerned if it is some kind of serious damage or repair? It seems that there is something there but again it could be just rust or surface blemish as well.

While sometimes even in a photo the issues are fairly obvious, there is nothing like carefully inspecting it in person.

The one here looks like a keystone mark with the middle scratched out.
I was hoping yours if it had one was more legible. Probably just the cast.

Millers Falls No. 3 hand vise, essentially new old stock. My first hand vise, this should make bench grinding small parts more enjoyable and productive.79f9eb9b2b14a7d0aada07a294d012f7.jpg

Looks very nice. I’d give that a date of around 1915 or earlier because of the replaceable jaws and the large round screw knob.

This post is continuation of the let's see your weld (not your vise) series

The photos speak for themselves and one can not help but admire the extra heavy duty beautiful weld job. And as for the vise, the condition is rightfully listed as good :lol_hitti

Can anyone provide a catalog page showing the 4 bolt flat base Craftsman's built by Reed. Or if not I'm specifically wanting to know specs on a Craftsman 5181 (jaw width and weight). I have the Reed catalog pages so even if someone knows which Reed 10? model it cross referenced to.

Thanks.

chris: Here's a page from a 1947 Craftsman catalog. The 45 pounds given for the 5181 is shipping weight but the paragraph above it says that actual weight is the same as shipping weight.

Awesome! Thanks for the page. Would I be correct to assume a 5181 with the long "C" underlined Craftsman logo would be older than the version with the riveted on badge?

Chris: yes Long C was prior to Heritage in the Craftsman family so Long C is older.

RG: man that 100 ish year old Prentiss almost looks new. NICE FIND!!

007: I had my hands on my little GRAND quick release clamp on vise and forgot to take a few pictures. it's a very nice vise and the quick release lever works great. I also own a GRAND quick release welding clamp that works great and it is 6 or 8 inches so not a little thing.

That IS a rare Monarch, but did you see the pitting on the back of the slide? Looks like maybe it was buried in mud for a few decades before it hit eBay.
Seller says “light pitting in a place or two”

I've been a few weeks looking for some new pickups, and on the 27th I found a KMC 4" and a Columbian D 33 1/2.

When I brought them home, I discovered the 33 1/2 had the same base as my Sears vise I restored last November. The beams are different dimensions though and the 33 1/2 jaws are much thicker and more aggressively textured.

I also had to use a 1/2" ID depth stop collar for the lead screw.

Yea, saw that.---Looks like it was standing strait up with the slide buried in dirt for a spell.---That detracts from the vise and don't know if that could be rectified with out creating a lot of slop.---I have one kind of like it with the swivel base.

BeardedOne I believe a lot of the lower end Craftsman mechanics vises were made by Columbian (based on their D series). So the similarity and common parts might not too surprising.

Overtime Columbian seems to have played around with some of the dimensions of their "beams" over various generations of D series. For example in the attached photo the vise on the left which is my older D44 is slightly heftier than than the vise on the right which is my newer D44 M3.

So the variation in the "beams" might be something to do with different vintage (generation) of the Craftsman and D33 1/2.

PS
BTW base on my personal observation the older versions seem to be generally chunkier than the newer ones, I suppose may be for cost saving??!! Sounds like what has happened to cars! Both vises and cars seem to have been put on metal diet (thinner) but at least unlike cars they did not replace most of the metal with plastic

Just picked up a Polish Turtleback. A 100mm FPU vise. On top of that, beautiful day for a 200 mile road trip. This one has a date code on the front jaw of March, 1975. Ive never seen a FPU with a date code.

Mark: looks like you've found the FPU honey hole. I think i recall seeing a date stamp on my 2 or 3 FPU's, but i'll have to take a look when I see them again.

ALL: I was moving a few things including a couple cabinets of vises and noticed this Grand quick release clamp on vise. are these rare or just very old and cool cause i think i like it a lot?
