LED lights lights in wood beam

I’m finishing up a bonus room (about 850 sqft) that will have vaulted walls with a flat ceiling peak of 11’. At about 9’ I’ll have 5 wooden beams about 8-9’ long crossing the room spaced out fairly equally.

Could I install bright dimmable 4’ led strip lights (say 2000 lumens each) facing upwards on each of the beams (slightly recessed into the beam so you don’t see the fixture) and still have sufficient lighting in the room? I do not have a preference on a strip light, puck light or whatever is suggested.

This is a bonus/TV room so it doesn’t have to be very bright. We just need lighting. We are considering not having any can lights in the ceiling or in the vaulted walls and this was an option suggested to us

Would 10000 lumens shining upwards in this fairly small room provide sufficient lighting?

I’ve included a picture to give perspective on the room.

Lights like these are 2000 lumens, 1 inch x 1 inch. You could mount them to the top of the beam. Would it be enough light? Only you can answer that.
Good luck,

I see those lights often on the web. They appear to be a fluorescent ballast bypass tube in their own fixture. Is the quality OK?

I have been hoping someone would chime in with their examples of bouncing light from the top of beams. Seems like an aesthetically pleasing idea.

Same quality as the bypass lamps. Just need to be mindful that those pins on the end are live and must be capped off.

It's not a new idea, but it is a good one. I think I'd prefer a dimming option just to kick the cool factor up a notch.

I definitely want a dimmable solution. However all of the 4 foot LED fixtures like the one pictured above don’t appear to be dimmable

Everthing just has to get more complicated and throw a "gotcha" in the mix. I suppose a standard GFCI breaker would make a capped off fixture safe from accidental liquid contact?

I have added a Lutron dimmer (with a ten year battery remote) to some dimmable LED cans in the house. I haven't really felt a "need" for dimmers yet. But, the install was easy.

Slowbra - Have to find the lamps that have external dimming drivers. I know CREE makes some ridiculously expensive retrofit lamps with external dimming drivers.

You are looking for "Type C" LED solutions. Type C means that they have an external driver. There are several out there, but only a few of them are dimmable. Those that are dimmable are likely to be 0-10VDC, although you can find some with a different style than normal ones.
