My dad died a month ago . I've been going through his tool box that looks a lot like the first picture. My mom tells me take whatever you want everytime I go to see her. I've been taking anything that says Craftsman or Stanley. Have come across some very interesting things. Is this a good site to post pictures to find out what it might be? I'm sure my husband is tired of me asking what is this.... I want these tools because all's I remember is him working on something. I especially love the ones he has engraved his last name, initials, or a series of numbers on. My husband thinks the numbers may be his badge number from work or something. would love to know if that is correct.....

Barbee,

Not sure folks here will be able to help you with numbers on the tools but there are a lot of wise people here who are very willing to help. I'm sorry about the loss of your father. Glad to hear you're finding solace in his tools. Please post them here and we'll do everything we can to help.

Nice Ledman! Not trying to be critical, rather asking because I've been trying to figure out what comes closest to the Craftsman red paint. In your red & gray wall, the set on the right has a more vibrant red that the other two sets. If I had to guess I'd say maybe the set of the right was freshly painted while the others look like they might be original. Is that correct? What brand/color did you use to repaint the set on the right?

Thanks!
Mike
The red and gray are really hard to match, it has been a hit and miss proposition. I changed the red I was using to the Krylon Farm & Implement "Massey Ferguson Red". It was a better match but I noticed the color changes when you use a red oxide primer underneath it versus going over the original or bare metal. Same goes when you start adding multiple layers. And yes you go through a lot of cans of paint, especially if you're doing all surfaces of the drawers (+/-3 coats of paint are needed).
For the small 6 drawer top chest I switched the gray to the Rust Oleum Hammered Gray and put it on in very light coats to avoid a heavy texture. So far it worked better than the Dupli-Color "Precision Gray" I was using.
The only issue I have now is I have multiple chests and boxes that are slightly different colors than each other; I have to choose whether it bugs me enough to go through a re-paint of the others or just live with them.

And yes, I keep buying more of these things.

On a related note: does anyone have a spare Craftsman emblem they would be willing to part with? The latest set I bought (10 drawer lower and 10 drawer top chest) is missing the emblem on the lower box.

Vince,
That line starts behind me! Needing a CM Chevron (lower left side) for awhile now. :)

You know I need one as well and was looking forever for one that wasn't an arm and a leg. I found this guy on eBay and took a shot at it. To my surprise it is fantastic. Super impressed by it. Beggars can't be choosers how I see it and glad I took a chance on it

Here it is attached to the box. The back of it is flat, no attachment for it. I took a 2 flat head small machine bolts, super glued them on and boom its attached. Worked out perfect

I saw that posting also; I suppose if I get desperate I will jump on it.
But I want to see what I can find from the used tool merchants at the next antique swap meet (for me that's Long Beach, CA on the 3rd Sunday of each month). It's a long shot but if I'm going there anyway, might as well try.

I picked up a red/grey roller bottom that has the garage door bottom . The garage door is open, but the lock bar is up and of course no key. I removed the lock clip but can't pull the lock forward and out. Any advice for removing the lock? I tired all my craftsman keys but none worked. Are these locks easy to pick? I don't want to destroy the lock if I don't have to. Thanks for your help.

You can try and pick the lock now I have done that with a long pair of small narrow tweezers or if you take a small Dremel tool and grind down the little tabs that hold the bar on you should be able to grind enough just to get that piece off then take the lock out

Why not order a new key from Waterloo Industries?

When I had mine I was missing keys and such so I grind tabs off back, pulled lock cyclinder, pulled out tumblers and made it so it could all my top chest could be one key and bottoms all another. This worked for me having 12 different keys sucked. It was cheap and easy but if plan to resell or locking to make all original than I can see going through all the hassle.

I'd rather get a key then break the lock. Anybody have the contact info for Waterloo handy? Thanks !

I've posted it before in several threads. Easy to find by googling Waterloo Industries. I've purchased close to half a dozen different keys and have had zero issues. 800-833-4405 is their # for replacement parts. You'll need to give them the number off the lock. I believe the red & gray should start with "LL".

Or haul the box to a locksmith

Ok...where I live calling a locksmith isn't cheap, a key from Waterloo is appx $7 shipped. And that's cheaper than calling any of the other places (Sears included) that claim to have keys for Craftsman toolboxes.

I haven't run into that situation. Yet. But I do recall the first time I called that the cust serv rep told me they don't have ALL the keys. I need to ask them why that is the next time I call.

As many of you know, I'm in the process of moving into my new shop. As such, I still have quite a bit in storage - including 3 more gray & red stacks. What the hell was I thinking today?!? I came home with another 12D roller and 10D top chest (far right). I'm running out of room!

I don't mind a bit!

Here are the gray/red prices:

I paid $150 for the stack on the far right (acquired together). The second stack from the right, I paid $150 for the 12d roller and $40 for the 10d top chest (acquired separately). The 3d roller in the middle came packed full of tools for $80, half of which I sold for $50 (all import tools) and the other half I kept. The 3d middle chest was $40 but I drove 120 miles to buy it, and the 3d top chest was $20.

All came off CL.

I have been wanting one of these gray/red Craftsmans for a while, and they either don't come up, or I am out of town when they do and they go quick. This one looks to be in good shape (haven't seen it in person yet) - my question is - what would you pay for this stack?

This is very helpful for my question above. Thanks, Brian!

I have three 9 drawer rollers and five 10 drawer top chests like the ones in your picture above. Obviously, not all are together in my shop.

Here are my thoughts. If they're in rough condition, throw my comments out the window. 9d rollers are not very common, nor are they rare. I've paid as much as $125 for one, and as little as $100 for a 9d roller and 10d top chest combo.

I'm of the opinion that a 9d roller in average condition is worth $75-$100. More if in excellent condition (like the one I paid $125 for).

The 10d top chests seem to be on of the more common of the Craftsman top chests. I've paid as little as $25 and as much as $50. I've walked away from several that were $75 or more.

Best of luck!

9 drawer rollers are scarce in central Ohio. I've been looking for a couple months since I assembled my collection. There's a 10 drawer top with 9 drawer roller locally for $300 firm empty in average condition listed a while. I want to replace my 2 5 drawer rollers with 9 drawers, but they are just about non existent around here. I don't think the $300 stack is going to sell, should be $150 going by the prices you guys give.

I picked up a model 65336 Craftsman 2 drawer tote tool box dated 12 67. Didn't realize what a collectible it is till I got it home. A few dents and some surface rust but in good condition for a 50+ year old box that saw continuous use but little respect. Usually this box is grey with red drawers but not this box. It is blue outside with red interior (top cavity and under lid & drawer interiors). The top had a paper label that was just white paper with no writing so I scraped it off and found the grey metallic paint under it. I first thought someone painted the box blue but can't find any evidence of another color under the blue, just metal. The box looks like it came from the factory with blue exterior including drawer fronts with red interior. The puzzle is the grey metallic under the paper label. Did Craftsman make blue with red interior 65336 boxes or is my box just an example of an excellent owner paint job. I might restore the box or just clean it up and spray it with clear coat like is done with rat rods. If it is blue & red from the factory, I might go the clear coat route as it is original only once. If it was repainted blue, I will go with grey metallic & red drawers. Will post pictures if I figure out how.

Found the answer to my question. The blue/red 65336 was originally grey/red. Found the drawers were red under the handle and the box had the grey metallic paint inside the drawer cavity. So I will be restoring my box as grey box with red drawers. The blue paint job was well done but not original. Since the box was made in December 1967 it saw a lot of history having survived. Am glad to have it. My wife asks how many tool boxes I need. My reply is as many shoes as you need. However I can't catch up as our house won't hold that many boxes!

Your "story" about some "alleged" Craftsman toolbox is great but without pics it didn't happen! We like pics! ;-)

Gregaz, I saw that same ad recently but it seems like the seller was asking a lot. Instead, I opted for a 10D roller that showed up in Tucson. A bit of a drive but the price was right and didn’t mind the trip.

I can’t find that ad anymore, did you end up buying it?

No, I passed based on the advice here. He was willing to take $200, but I don’t know the condition.
