$100, wow, nice find. (Good thing my garage is full.) Someone should definitely check it out:

Ha! Nice work!

I'm surprised the "lol" didn't irritate him. CL seems have people touchy about "lowballers," or that don't want to answer questions.

Since this isn't a discussion forum, I'll post what I think is a good deal that illustrates this:

https://newlondon.craigslist.org/tls/d/waterloo-magnum-mechanics/6442217603.html

A clean looking waterloo magnum set for $500. I texted to ask if he knew model numbers, or just width, and where in CT it was. I got back a one-word "no". wtf?

It was too far for me without knowing something about it, so I moved on.

facebook, not craigslist, but . . . . .

west warwick RI 300$
...
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/533222197078502

Cool, thanks. I'm not on FB though, but maybe I'll have my wife ask if there are more pictures. (She's never NOT on FB).

Craigslist seems to be rife with scams (both listings and responses), and I refuse to use FB. I've started looking at letgo, thinking maybe there are fewer scams. Search is weak though.

One tip on CL: if a deal seems too good and has pics, do a google image search with the image URL to see if it was scraped from elsewhere.

the one thing that faceplant's marketplace has is that you can see who the lister is, how long they have been on fb, stuff like that. i think that, as a result, there are less scams.

i watch a few specialized things that i would buy for the right price. one thing i have notice is that when things appear on both fb and craigslist, often cl is more expensive.

There are similar ones now on eBay for that kind of money or less.
This one ended a week ago and brought a high bid of $61 with extra for shipping.

Probably thought you were a scammer or just difficult to deal with. A lot of sellers on CL and Ebay avoid buyers who ask questions, as that group often includes problem buyers.

No verification of identity or information though, so scammers just set up accounts with fake names and info. Don't think it really helps much, might even be worse since no real contact information is required to complete the deal.

ok, let's compare:

CL creates a throwaway email address for you to use. you dont need to put any information down, and can list the item as being located anywhere you want.

FB uses your existing account. you can see when they joined, and how many "friends" they have. you can even see if you share "friends". you use FB's messaging service, which is archived. the item is listed in the location (town/area) they listed as their home when they joined.

so, while it is possible your FB account got stolen, and someone is using it to scam people, they will likely only get away with it once. when you complain, FB will look into it, and (likely) freeze the account.

or, you can see that the FB account was created last week, and there are no "friends", and you can (should) be skeptical about the deal.

while neither system is perfect, the FB system appears better as relating to trust. i have read an article by an unaffliiated person who said that FB appears to be ramping up, and CL is losing listings, and they are getting concerned. sorry, i dont have the refrence.

Sure, I get that. But it was a text message from an active mobile number, and asked a valid question. (width or model #, and where he was to go see it.) It wasn't a non-specific question about "the item." :)

Anyway, it was/is a reasonable deal if someone closer was interested. I'm guessing it's southwest CT.

But have to provide a phone number or some real information to arrange the sale.

FB uses your existing account.

Or one of the many fake accounts the scammer set up years ago, located wherever they choose, and "seeded" to make them look legit and to add many friends. Bots do the rest.

so, while it is possible your FB account got stolen, and someone is using it to scam people, they will likely only get away with it once. when you complain, FB will look into it, and (likely) freeze the account.

More likely the account was set up as a scammer account and, as in most cases, FB will "look into it" and do nothing, as they usually do. Really hard to get your FB account frozen.

the FB system appears better as relating to trust.

I'd say just the opposite - FB requires no real information and is easily used to set up scam accounts, CL requires at least a little real info to make the transaction.

In reality, both are heavily used by scammers, and I would advise caution when using either one.

FREE Vise and BENCHES. GONE

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/zip/d/free-work-benches/6519488875.html

I hope one of you guys snagged this deal. Today was one of those rare days where I didn’t check the local C/L until the evening. :(

I emailed the seller but I hold out no hope at all.

Free workbenches and vise. (I added the red comment)

Edit - I heard from the seller that it was gone in just a few minutes. DUH?

Friendly hint... if you modify a picture you lifted from C/L you can get around their automatic blocking for such activity and post the pic to GJ.

I finally scored one of these "unicorn" CL deals today. My lesson learned is that you've got to be ready to drop EVERYTHING in a moments notice and get in the truck and go in order to have half a chance. For $100 I think I did pretty well, love the heritage stuff.
I already have a top and bottom and have been wanting 2nd set to match for a long time, now just need a 2nd bottom.

Personally I wouldn’t pay $95 for that vise in that condition. Rusted stuck bullet vises can be tough to get back into A-1 condition. (Ask me how I know...) The broken off mount really limits the resale value if that’s what you’re thinking.
This is a project vise for somebody with a lot of experience.
With that being said, I would pick it up for $40-50 just for parts and maybe someday the challenge of making it whole again. The 3 1/2 inch jaw model bullet is fine for most users. For a user, the 3 mounting ears will be fine for mounting to a bench. Lots of good vises only come with 3 to begin with.
