It shows a shipping charge for me. Auto calculated @ $106.03 to Arizona. Not that I'll be bidding on that bad boy but there is no mention of local pickup when I view the listing in the app.

Shipping to me even further away is quoated at the same 106. Personally, if I paid over a grand for a vise, I would want to pick it up in person. If the shipper damages it, how would you handle insurance anyway??? I’d do not plan on bidding.

Just for kicks, does anybody want to predict the dollar bid that will win the auction? I say $2500

This has nothing to do with vises. I just ran across it while doing some research. I recently bought one of these bolt cutters but that's neither here nor there. Read the last two lines in this 1906 ad.

Well hello there folks! It’s been a while! Well I can promise everyone that my vise collection continues to grow. Which brings me to the reason for writing in.

I find it challenging to understand why it’s necessary to post items like this that haven’t sold yet...If you post an item that’s on eBay....and you aren’t a player for it then you aren’t doing anyone any favors.....all this does is run the price up for the ones who are trying to procure the item.

Rest assure that it will be a fight to the end for the new owner of this vise so the additional exposure just makes it more difficult.

Now I’m speaking up because I am a player on this vise and I’ll pay real money for it. Trust me. So I’m not crying because I’ve been outbid. I’m simply speaking up and saying leave well enough alone. Post it up after it sells or whatever floats your boat. Just have respect enough for the ones who are ready willing and able to take down a serious item like this vise.

P.S. here is a look at my Holland’s 19 vise! IMG_3462.JPG

VISEs, long time.---Sorry if our goofing off rubbed you the wrong way.---Guess you got a point about over exposure on an item.---On some vises I'd have to agree with you, we're guilty.---But this one is kind of different.---A one of.---With or without positive or adverse attention, this one was destined to get exposed.---It's like when the Pope got shot, you try to keep a lid on it, try to keep the press out of it, hope no one finds out, but a thing like that is just bound to come out.:headscrat

Good luck.

I agree with you. I wouldn’t have brought it up. But now it is out there. I promise not to bid against you. Good luck. My popcorn bowl is ready for the final seconds of that auction.

LOL! This is probably the most popular vise thread in the world. There's no reason why anything relevant to the vise community shouldn't be discussed.

eBay holds not secrets, all the serious vise collectors knew about this listing without ever seeing it here, including myself.

I predict this one sets a new record...$3k+

Jesus guys, it's on a public forum, just like this one. ViSEs, you know what I do when I have a rare/unique one because you were part of that process. But this one's already on the Bay. Tobs of of pre-sales links posted here before, it's just part of the territory. Put on your big boy pants and open your wallet if you want it. I'll do what I please thank you, but do appreciate your thoughts.

Amen! Should be a good finish. I spoke with the correct owner tonight. They picked this vise up at an estate sale for cheap cheap cheap. I assured them their ROI would be well worth the initial investment!

On auction items it sure does **** when guys who would never buy it exposes it to a potential buyer who may have not seen it and then they drive the price up. Seller sure is happy

CRS You are as usual a great source of interesting facts!
Wow, Chinese were at it even then! What is even more amazing is that at the time China was a subsistence agricultural economy with no industry! Also international trade was not free flowing like today, so who was importing this imitation shxt in to US?

I love it! Thanks for the opinions guys. I'll start collecting them for a book entitled either: "Vise Vice: The Tool Tools" or "Ms. Manners - Vises. Do the Right Thing or You'll Get the Squeeze"

That was what struck me too. China was very definitely NOT an industrialized nation then. I'll have to check in my old Asian History textbooks. (I suspect the British had something to do with it).

By the way, things then were more globalized than people realize. Some of the late 19th early 20th century American industrial journals I have read had monthly reports on industrial commodity prices from around the world. I even read a very early report (1820-1830) in a British journal about the copper mines in the UP. For all you non-Michiganders the UP is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Raw copper could be found lying on the ground.

Ain't that something!---Joe ain't going to get his hands on that one on the cheap.---But he'll be in there swinging.---I might take the Hobo Express myself, just for a ways of course.---Hate to get caught with my britches down and have to take out a second mortgage.:bounce:

That's going to be a wild ride.---We are getting ever closer to finding that 700 pounder.

VA if I'm the Joe you're referring to don't worry, I have NEVER bought a vise on ebay. I prefer them wild caught! But I have to tell you I have been sorely tempted...

I wouldn't post a vise I think a collector is going to score a deal on, like this one I found last week https://www.ebay.com/itm/362252653969?ul_noapp=true&autorefresh=true , but when prices rise above $700. I think it's pretty safe to say the cat is out of the bag. Don't think the guys paying those kind of prices are looking for leads on GJ.

Rags, I know that seller well. He hasn't learned. I live 5 miles from him. I told him to call me first and I will pay more than if you put it on ebay, after fees...guy just won't learn...SMH

VISE COMPARISON
When I looked over the Meadville Yost 103 I recently bought, something about the model number being stamped instead of embossed began to nag at me. It seemed familiar. On most vises the number is embossed just like the lettering. That vague thought just sort of tumbled around in my brain until, quite by coincidence, I ran across this 1916 Columbian ad on Twertsy's site. Gilmore Yost was employed by Columbian in 1916! Columbian vises commonly had stamped numbers. Here's a comparison of a Columbian 503 and my Yost 103. They're not identical but the similarities are enough to get you wondering. What do you guys think?

NOTE TO TWERTSY: Thanks again for the incredible amount of work put into collecting all that information.

So this is what I came up with over the weekend to store my vises. Simple 2x4 and 2x8 construction. Nothing fancy, just glue, nails and screws. It does the job and fits the area without taking up a lot of space. 6’x18”x36.5”.
I moved a little over half of my vises here so far.

Bagged Very nicely done, simple but sturdy and functional. By the way that is one heck of nice vise collection that you have and that is just half of them!

CRS The contour and general profile of the vises seems to be similar but obviously some of the details are different such as T vs rectangular jaw inserts, Yost's much more substantial dynamic jaw support shelf , longer jaw neck of the Columbian, etc.

If as you have stated Gilmore Yost was employed by Columbian in 1916 it is plausible that Yost's design might have been influenced by his previous work at Columbian. But some would argue that his vises for most part were superior to that of his former employer :D.

Thanks gman007. My collection doesn’t compare to some of the big guns on here.

Here are my little vises.

The other vises scattered around in my shop include a Parker 956, , Reed 404, Parker 804, Parker 974, Heuer, 4.5” American Scale, Chicago Wilton 9400, columbian 804, Oswego 88, Parker 384-1/2, 4.5” Starrett, and there is at least another handful that I can’t think of.

Yea, you're the Joe.---Wished I could say that I never bought a vise off EBay, but there were a few that if I hadn't jumped on the them right then, I knew I probably would never see another.---A few that come to mind is the Baby Pittsburgh, the #208 Yost, the 2 Brass Columbians, the Wards Wilton, and a few others.---Of course, like you say Joe, I had to pay a heck of a lot more for them on EBay than if I had of found them at an estate sale.---But the estate sales around here are nothing but junk.---And the sellers still want 2 prices for their junk.:dunno:

XJ: I'd bet we've identified thousands of vises on this thread so post up as many good pictures and information as you can (size of jaws, weight, age...) and we'll give it a try.

Bagged: nice looking shelf and better looking collection. i've heard that having steel on wood could maybe prevent it from rusting if that is even an issue since you've restored a good portion of yours. that said the cardboard might collect any moisture and cause the bases to rust a bit where wood might not and just thought i'd mention it.

ALL: it would be fun if we NEVER TALKED ABOUT PRICING on this thread, but I really doubt that would happen. to some members $100 is a filter on their race car and to others it's a great night out on the town. and others it might be part of their latest Dr. bill they can't afford to pay. I'm very happy if you found a good deal or a great old vise and whether you are adding it to a collection that makes you happier or if it's your only bench vise that you needed for your garage/shop it doesn't matter what you paid for it if you like it.

Ok Drives, here is all I can see and know at this point:

00I0I_bwUEFqV3bMR_1200x900.jpg

"Vise is about 7" long and jaws are about 4 1/2" wide."

Looks like V96 cast in the front there.

What is it? Junk, Import, brand? You guys are the experts, you tell me.
