Netflix: Find it, Fix it, Flog it

So the big complaint I see on here about the shows that we would like to watch is all the fake drama and deadlines. I recently stumbled across a show while I was laid up with a back, neck, shoulder combo deal. It's called Find it, Fix it, Flog it. It's a british show, so besides the narrator in the background sounding like she is yelling at you, there is no real drama, and the deadlines are never talked about.

Just two guys running around, finding cool old stuff, fixing it up, and evaluating it. Some of the things that might interest people on here have been a cool old triumph (and a few MoPed style bikes), an old Castrol Oil Pump, and other smatterings of automobilia.

They do have it set up as a minor competition, but that always takes a back seat to finding the stuff and fixing it.

I do wish they showed more of the process of fixing it, but the show is pretty decent so far.

Anyone else watching?

It seems like the American Restoration show would be a perfect candidate for a youtube channel. Drop the drama/bantering and the the repeat scene BS that they all do and we have a winner. Surely there is a shop out there doing this kind of work that could fall into some extra cash pretty easily.

Hard to make money on youtube though, you have to get lots of viewers to get sponsors, but it could happen, there are people that do it.

I do remember when you could watch shows that actually taught you something, they were usually on saturday mornings, car shows and truck shows, they would show you how to install the lift, review products, etc, YouTube is going to be the "new" place of those things now, hopefully they get enough viewers to be successful.

Look at the RoadKill guys on Velocity and Youtube...

They know their stuff and have way too much fun. They do stupid
stuff and remind you why old cars are fun, not precious investments
to be auctioned while sipping champagne on a Monterrey golf course.

I will check out the show. I have been enjoying the guys at Donut Media lately, short sucint informational car stuff, great format I usually watch on facebook.

The husky guy with daddy issues is hilarious and very very good with the "everything you need to know to get up to speed on the XXXXXX" videos.

Which is like a video that covers all the history of the Porsche 911, or the Buick grand national, etc. The exact right amount of solid info (92%) and jokes/goofs (8%).

I've been watching, and I'm only a few episodes in, but I have a couple things I'd like to see differently.

The guys really don't always do the hands-on work. Aside from washing or brush-painting, the work is all farmed out. Sometimes its a specialty thing and needs to be (we can't all have large powdercoating booths), but often the item disappears and comes back later finished by another shop.

I enjoy seeing their ideas, and may steal a few someday, but its hard to look at all the cool places they go and not want to get more than the 2 items they are allowed....an entire warehouse full of "junk" and they take 2 items. Imagine if you were given a year and access to the building. Then they could really make some money for the owners.

Its like American Pickers but British with a twist. Just refreshing enough to put an entertaining spin on a worn-out show. Plus the owners benefit, or donate proceeds to charity, even better.

If that crazy craft lady paints over another beautiful piece of natural wood Im going to have to stop watching though.

Mostly RoadKill reminds me of the guys I grew up with; they have the benefit of digital editing, but without the beer. When we did those kind of things, hospitals and/or cops were occasionally the result. Been There Done That Lucky To Be Alive.

I had watched the first episode a month or so ago and on OP recommendation thought I'd watch the second.
I didn't even make it through the splash.
It ***** on so many levels.
The first episode they made a table from a wheel. There is no pride in that.
. They poorly polished up an old gas can and made a stink of it.
I saw the same coming in the second episode.

I'm looking for something like the Jesse James Austin speed shop, not some poofs doing grade school easy projects.

Others should try the show. It's to me, the worst of all tied together.

To each their own. I like seeing the smaller projects as it is all I have time for.

Same. Sometimes the wife or girlfriend wants something made, and a small project can be relaxing.

So one of the guys likes making tables and the other likes gas cans, still better than listening to the discovery channel narrator repeat the same **** over and over and over again about cutting down trees, digging for gold, or whatever. Its entertaining for now. Im sure itll wear off like the rest.

I didn't think much of Find It, Fix It, Flog It.

One of the presenters, Henry Cole, had/s another series called 'Shed and Buried'
(it's on www.travelchannel.co.uk).
He did something similar, travelling around the U.K. rummaging through peoples 'sheds', buying a few items to renovate and sell on.

The big difference with this earlier series was that his partner was the incredibly talented Sam Lovegrove (think - a slightly shorter Edd China with a beard). This guy has massive knowledge of older British motorcycles, cars and machinery incl. stationary engines, which was put to use on motorcycles, cars etc. Lots of demonstrations of older hands-on skills.

Hint - not all the 'sheds' he visits are full of junk. One shed happened to be where 100pt authentic replica Manx Nortons are made.....

Also check out Henry's home workshop - it won't be what you expect.... Watch out for his Sealey Classic toolbox in Antique Cream in the background. He tests his motorcycles around his 'paddock'....

Worth a watch but might be too tame/laid-back for you guys.

I never liked this particular show, Shed and buried is better.
Henry Cole has done a fair few motorcycle shows as well and I believe he still holds a land speed record for pre 1955 750cc motorcycles.

^^ Iirc, Sam Lovegrove (the mechanic on the program) rebuilt the engine on this landspeed record bike. (was this the famous bike known as "Slippery Sam"?)

Two things I particularly like about "Shed and Buried" are :-

1) There's never any arguements, shouting or mad rush to get things done. They don't do 'over-nighters' or work to impossible deadlines.

2) They never spend much money renovating things. Instead they use their ingenuity and old time skills to get things done. They show just how much can be done at home in a small workshop/shed with a few basic tools.Not everyone has lots of money to spend on projects....
