Just got a bran new poulan lawn tractor delivered. 1500 cdn from the good people of walmart. .

So the tractor is in good shape. As it should be. It appears to be new older stock witch is fine it was on clearance .

Now the problem . I cant get it to start. I went and got a 6v charger and have the batter charging now. However i found a strange plug that runs off 2 wires off the ignition. They go to nowhere. Looked everywhere for the other plug end its just not there.

Anyone have a poulan tractor.

MTD Yard machines all same. Its a 15.5 hp briggs n stratt

Many of these new machines have safety interlocks where it will not start unless the machine is in neutral, brake is on, mower is off and your **** is in the seat. Read the owners manual for the correct sequence for your model. Also test the battery with a volt meter. It might be ok.

Charger has decided to start working. Showing battery at 70 percent. Ill charge it a few hrs and try again. Sounds like i better read some of the manual as well.

Never heard of a 6 volt battery in a riding lawn mower. And, if it doesnt start, call Walmart and have them come get it!

Am I missing something? This is a brand new tractor, isn't it under warrentee? Also if it is not, and you have issues, I have had excellent luck finding any and all parts and service manuals online for pretty much anything I have looked for.

A simple check of the mower deck to make sure the deck is not engaged. Typically, when deck is engaged, no start.

The problem was all me. Too dark. Too many wobbly pops. Too big a hurry. Tractor is a ok. Runs good just got it going. Battery needed to charge. Still. No clue what the wires off the ignition that go no where are for. But it doesnt matter

Probably for an accessory,it is defiantly 12v.If you ever jump it from a vehicle don't have it running. It's too many amps for the mower.

While it doesn't need to be running, it won't hurt. Current draw is a function of the load, not the source. You can plug in your 7w nightlight into the same outlet as your 1500w space heater can't you?

Not quite. Amps in any circuit is determined by the resistance of the circuit and the voltage applied, Ohm's Law. My Jeep has a 130 amp alternator and a battery capable of supplying up to 650 amps, but it doesn't damage the 3 watt dome lights. ;)

Voltage is applied to the equipment. Amperage is the returning result from the equipment.

It's more of a over voltage issue. Most mowers charge at just over 13v. Most autos charge between 14-16v iirc. I've always heard, "don't do it while the car is running", and I've always practiced that as well. I can't honestly tell you if the over charge theory is true or not.

For the minute or so it takes it won't hurt anything.

In over 40 years of small engine repair I have seen it take out electronics a few times. And that was the recommendation from an engineer in the lawn and garden industry. You certainly don't need the extra power of the auto running to start a lawn mower.Just trying to save people, but what do I know I'm just a dumb mechanic.
