Falcon looks tidy again. Yeah, nah, paint shouldn’t come off like that. Did the trainee wax between coats or something? Sounds like someone missed not having his favourite car for a week!

Nice score on the levels and drills. Should look nice on your wall if you have space left. You can get replacement spirit level tubes so should be a nice repair on the level. Most are the new dayglo type but you can fund the more classic yellow ones. Were these fit in with a bedding compound or some adjustable caps? My gramps had a wooden level like that covered in cement and paint and often washed clean without oil or other coating, left out in the sun to dry or put away wet and still remained straight. It probably ended up in the trash years ago.

Lyndon, good thinking with the Falcon repair and that an Insurance company actually lived up to its warranty after all this time.

I just wonder how many people would actually remember that one.:dunno:

I find a To Do List is a must as it keeps me focused to some degree.
That's one thing I do at the end of the day in the work shop, every thing is cleaned an put away and its great to start the new day with a clean slate so to speak.

Great score on the tools..

Have a good one..

Steve

Yep - Shannons were great on this re-do. I've always had most of the cars with them. I've got to to the windscreen next..... It's had 5 hits that have created "stars", and should get done for nothing under the policy.

And, yes - my normal habit has always been to put everything away at the end of the day, and I will go back to that now, as the mess created paralysis.... :lol_hitti :willy_nil

Looks like the server update has fixed your access. As for your Falcon, did you know you can get a protective film over that to protect it. Spotted being done in a magazine recently.

Simon

Yep, what ever Ryan discovered fixed all problems.

And I do know about that film, as we got it applied to Irene's car when we bought it, and it works well. But the poor old XR8 is now 12 years old, and it's hard to justify the expense.... We'll see? :dunno:

Between you and Andy is there nothing I can't find out? So now I'm on the lookout for replacement spirit level tubes.... Next thing I know Bob H will jump in and say he's got 5 put aside for a rainy day.........

I'll look that up as soon as I get 2 seconds to rub together.

All

I was talking about the XJR to AJ tonight, and mentioned that it is the fastest thing I've ever been in that can go from any speed to "Can you slow down" in 2.5 seconds. A keeper, I'd suggest. And the weekend after next I'm out on my Pat Malone in it on a club run down to the Scarborough Hotel (http://www.thescarboroughhotel.com.au/), north of Wollongong (and to which me or my transport company delivered all the paint for it's restoration about 6 years ago). That will be a great day....All on my own, 4 litres of supercharged, quad cam V8, open highway, and other Jags around. Can't wait!

Lyndon: your Falcon did a 180 after the repair and looks like a new car. WELL DONE and nice that is was covered on your insurance plan.

so part of my GETTING ORGANIZED is not to just stuff my STUFF in boxes and bins and on a shelf anymore just to get a bench (I might have 8 at the moment and not one is ready to do any work on it yet) clear, but i'm guessing you put stuff away so you can FIND IT and good for you for writing out a TO DO LIST.

how's that hose bib out near the street next to you fence working out? i bet it's a dream not having to pull out all that hose anymore.

cheers and best of luck with your NBN that seems to be giving you AUSSIES the business.

You need not but ask!

Actually repaired a few old tools with spirit levels but mostly came from a desire to make a custom compound bow sight for someone. Found a nice red one that was not so distracting would you believe.

Lyndon, you know me too well, I could have sworn I bought a bunch of those spirit level tubes. Ran down to the workshop and searched the drawers in the first two parts cabinets.
attachment.php

I looked in all the drawers of the other five cabinets and they weren't there. Obviously they are in one of those three missing drawers.
attachment.php

I did Google spirit level vials Australia to see if I could find them for you locally. I got quite a few hits but it looks like Dan Murphy's has more spirit vials in stock than anyone else in Australia. I don't know why they chose to replace 'vials' with 'styles.'

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/liquo...699616165B3FC789.ncdlmorasp1303?bmUID=m5k7U3o

Amazon came in with a fair selection but not all of them are offering them in bulk (my preferred order size).

You cut me up!!!!

Dan Muphys here is a new (since you left) alcoholic supplier, ie bottle shop..... :lol_hitti:lol_hitti If I asked them to give me a price for a spirit level tube I think I'd get escorted off site - pronto! :scared:

So, as I'm out at Tamworth tonight and until late tomorrow (it's nearly a six hour drive to get here), I'll look on the weekend......

Thanks for checking in.

Falcon turned out really nice.

Tamworth! You're nearly here (OK, well, about halfway), so is it business or pleasure?

Coooo-eeeee!

Is anyone home?

Mark

Thanks for looking in . I'll explain the long absence shortly. :willy_nil

Oh - and yes - Tamworth was a long run up and back over 2 days (840 kms round trip)...

OK - it's been nearly a month since I've been on my own thread, but things have been happening!

We've had Lauren's engagement party! Which of course Irene volunteered to cater for.....:headscrat (which then meant the fiance's Mum got cooking as well). Here's the happy couple at the site of the event (Camden Bi-Centennial Equestrian Park http://www.camdenequestrianpark.com.au/):

IMG_7055.JPG

Of course the "kids" were there. :willy_nil (for a while anyway).

The open on 2 sides "shed" was done up by Lauren, using the stuff that has been building up as clutter in my lounge room for the last month or so :

IMG_7032.JPG

But it did make the shed look great :

IMG_7042.JPG

IMG_7043.JPG

That's Tayla and my mother in the first shot....

But before that happened I went on a Jag Club run from Liverpool down across the Seacliff Bridge (made famous world wide by that Ferrari advert):

(You see the bridge at the 0:40 spot, and it was never acknowledged by Ferrari or Shell....)

It was a hugely wet day, but I took her out anyway, with over 80 other club members, all out giving themselves an excuse for washing the big cats when they got home :3gears: :

We were supposed to stop at the Scarborough Hotel, but they stupidly gave our booking to someone else, so the Wombara Bowlo became the lunchtime stop over....

IMG_3047.jpg

I've also been keeping the big green box store profitable... :

IMG_7070.JPG

These were on the specials table, so I said "I'll have them thanks" with the pack of hex head screw driver bits and handle in the background, which will become the inside tool kit when I finish the lightweight box (sometime before 2020 :willy_nil).

I was also checking out the top of the roof peak on the garage the other day, after washing some bird poop off, and discovered that the brain dead guys that built the thing just cut a top flashing and bent it up to attach the logo of the company that I got it from. This left a hole in the top of the roof, behind the flashing... :

IMG_7061.JPG

IMG_7065.JPG

(Excuse the mold - I trying to kill that now with one of those pour on and leave it solutions)

So I took some measurements, and got the guys at work in the fab shop to make me up a new flashing, which they did beautifully out of 1.2 gal plate.... I decided I'd paint it before fitting, and here it is drying in the front yard :

IMG_7060.JPG

Couldn't resist adding a personalised touch to it! ;)

Cont'd shortly.....

I got early wind of this so I know Lyndon has been busy. I see a happy couple and I do not mean the Dogs. This weekend here today is my parents 56th Wedding Anniversary so lets hope that Lyndon's Daughter has the same type of happiness.

As for the link I think you mean about 45 second spot. Open for correction. It is a great advert.

Continuing....

While I was up the ladder looking at the roof, I couldn't resist a pic looking out over the roof :

IMG_7066.JPG

(If there weren't so many trees you'd be able to see the site of the venue for Lauren's party. It's not far from here.)

Also in the last month I've had a company out to quote replacing this little 2.4m x 2.4m thing :

IMG_7072.JPG

With a much bigger one (5m x 3.99m), giving me a proper woodwork shop. The local council will permit any shed less than 20sqm without a permit, and it can be 2.7m high at the eaves and 4m high at the peak - you beauty you say. Well yeah, except the company that quoted needed a "structural slab, with piers" and when they got the sewer survey back from the water authorities - the footings would interfere with the line of the sewer. Damn it - Back to square one!

And I've had some good mail too - I couldn't resist this :

IMG_7073.JPG

And the pile of glass jars for the rationalising of the nail containers into consistent shapes continues :

IMG_7071.JPG

And as I needed my trailer to take all the fluff and flummery out to Lauren's party, I went over to Irene's late Dad's place where its stored and bought it back. Inside it I had previously put the old Singer Sewing Machine table of her Mum's, which Irene wanted badly :

IMG_7064.JPG

Irene's Dad got rid of the sewing machine years ago, but we know where we can get one from.... He filled the holes with what looks like the same wood. He also put another back on it made from masonite.... :

IMG_7069.JPG

But it is ridgy didge :

IMG_7067.JPG

With some beautiful detailing on the sides :

IMG_7068.JPG

So that's another project!

And that just about brings us up to date. Irene's out at softball, and I've got to get the washing off the line for her.:dunno:

Oh - and getting the washing in is a good time to think - which means I forgot to record that the Monday following the party was Irene and my 29th wedding anniversary.

Celebrated with lunch at Lucky Cheng's Noodle Bar at the Bankstown Sports Club.

You have been busy!!

Great update. Too bad about the building. Seems you should be able to find a supplier for a building that small which will go with a reinforced slab on select fill. You may find that supplier will be less expensive as well, without a foundation designed for a future second and third stories in an earthquake zone. :3gears:

Lyndon, you are forgiven for being AWOL. Unlike mine, your excuses are top shelf -- any one of them would have been good enough.

Congratulations on the engagement party -- apparently my family hasn't heard of them (oldest grandson eloped to Las Vegas last week).

The Sea Cliff Bridge is amazing and had it been built back in ancient times when we lived down under, it would have been a wonderful destination. I watched a flyover video and read a little about the bridge. Came across an odd description: "Fee of $12.00 applies if stopping to enjoy this picturesque playground." I guess the Ferrari driver didn't have to pay.

Looks like your roof leak was part of the design. I like the sign but Lyndon's Auto Emporium would have made for a more robust repair.

We often have to sink pilings before pouring the concrete slabs for homes and in-ground pools in Florida but doing that for a metal shed seems like overkill. I would expect that from a builder who didn't really want the job. Did you tell them you planned to stamp Jaguar body repair panels or put a 40,000 litre water tank inside?

I hope everyone knows you are saving those jars for nails. My father-in-law saved peanut butter jars for years to do the same thing. Mother-in-law thought they were trash and threw all the boxes full of jars out. He didn't notice the loss for months. Pretty sure that contributed to his demise.

That sewing machine cabinet and base is a treasure. The treadle and flywheel are missing so it would be hard to restore to it's original state but there are electric powered Singers that would go well in that cabinet.

The 1951 Singer my wife inherited came in a modern cabinet that was given the "antique" paint treatment in the '60s. I stripped it and Tung oiled it back to something close to original, which just happened to kinda match the furniture in the guest room.
attachment.php

The top opens up to a pretty big size so the boat cover I made with it was almost manageable.
attachment.php

The machine itself is interesting. It's a Model 15-91, one of the most popular models Singer made (the Model 15-** was produced for more than 100 years) so lots of good condition used ones are out there. The chief advantage of the -91 sub-model is the drive system. It is a gear drive rather than a pulley and belt. It's powerful enough to sew leather and multi-layer canvas or denim. It's close to an industrial caliber machine but fits the look of your antique cabinet. This is what the drive system looks like:
attachment.php

This machine was used to upholster furniture, make a tent, custom trailer cover, boat cover and alterations and repairs to clothing. The nickel plating is worn off the throat and bed side plates but it still works perfectly after 67 years.

Lyndon congratulations on the engagement. My granddaughter also chose to go get married in the park; no celebration for the rest of us. I have a Singer as above also but it is a portable model. Great machine! Many of the treadle type were made into wood lathes back in the early seventies during the back to the land movement when the oil prices sky rocked.

Bob - I did see that news in your thread - while we were hoping that they would surprise us all and bring a celebrant out of the cupboard, sadly, nothing materialised. Which means we still can't make plans for 2019.... :eyecrazy:

As far as I'm aware there is no fee applicable to pass over, or stop at the southern end for a walk and photos. There is certainly no infrastructure for toll collection, and I think Wollongong Council would be mad to try and install something like that - it would unenforceable, and it's a very big tourist drawcard.

Looks like your roof leak was part of the design. I like the sign but Lyndon's Auto Emporium would have made for a more robust repair.

Nah - too much work..... ;)

I think this result may galvanise thoughts into a different direction with SWMBO. More on that soon.

I hope everyone knows you are saving those jars for nails. My father-in-law saved peanut butter jars for years to do the same thing. Mother-in-law thought they were trash and threw all the boxes full of jars out. He didn't notice the loss for months. Pretty sure that contributed to his demise.

Yes - they are building up on the workbench. Up to 13 now. At 16 I pull the trigger on that job, and since they are there - no-one else in the house goes anywhere near my work bench (a pit bull and 3 sirens in waiting), so they should be safe. Stay tuned.

Thanks for that info on the machine, and a look at yours. Yes - the treadle, flywheel and sewing machine are missing on this one, but we know where to get them from out here, so it maybe re-installed. We'll see. Once the kids move all their ****, um, stuff out into their own place, I'm thinking it may go on the front porch near the main door, for a while anyway. It's currently taking up space in the garage next to the XJR, and I'll be happy to see it move.

And Bob, I can see from editing your quote into my thread that you went to the same typing school as Irene. A space after every sentence that finishes a paragraph, 2 between sentences in a continuing paragraph. It's exactly how Irene types on a computer now, because she learnt that way on a typewriter. Makes formatting stuff (like our Christmas cards - for which she is famous amongst all our friends) for her infuriating.....

Thanks for checking in, as always.

The kids house completion has now been pushed to somewhere before the end of April, according to the builder. It's very close. I went past last week as I was going that way, and the driveways, paths, and topsoil were all there, but no floor coverings.... And no - no wedding stuff is going to be stored here. Once the kids are into their house AJ has a perfectly good 40' container at his parents place (which is where all their furniture is at present) that can hold all that stuff).

And the future of the shed - well plans are brewing, but more on that in a minute or 3.

Lyndon, the sewing machine is gold..

Thanks Steve.

Life is busy, and complex....

And now, an update.... Drum Roll please.

Discussions on our future direction here have taken several interesting turns. When negotiating with ones significant other (especially mine), I have made a little discovery. So now I make suggestions, the biggest and most expensive ones 1st, to which I get a slap across the back of the head, then a look of horror, and then the counter suggestion that maybe we'll sell here and build something...... Then she comes back later, after looking at things like land and location, with, "no - I think we'll stay here". At which point I throw in that if we stay here certain things need to be done ($$$$). "Mmmm" I get. And I can see the thoughts crystalising in her head. Later, sometimes days later, I'll get an unexpected suggestion that "yes, maybe we should sell and either build or buy". It's not time for a final result yet, but it's getting closer, and I think my subtle, but expensive suggestions regarding this house, and my shed needs, might finally produce an acceptable outcome. We'll see :dunno: :eyecrazy:

On other matters, things remain blisteringly busy at work as the fleet continues to expand, and we bring more and more systems online. On the home front, I did get this up :

IMG_7075.JPG

Which replaced this gnarly old moss covered plastic thing :

IMG_7074.JPG

And quite a few of the other jobs on the to-do list have been finished :

IMG_7104.JPG

But not the job I had listed at 1st priority (finish the coffee table) - that job still scares me!

And the thing that has been slowly getting attention has been the building of the box for the label maker :

IMG_7096.JPG

There's been quite a few whoopsies on that, including after fitting the hinges, that the lid has a bad dose of the Bob Heines's, and won't close :

IMG_7097.JPG

I have shimmed out the rebates for the hinges, which slightly improved things, but decided that one of these will see it fixed (by force) :

IMG_7100.JPG

So I decided while sleeping the other night to use the device that Bob caused me to buy for fixing finger grips into the tool holding foam, to burn a label into the top of the box before staining.....

1st I had to fix the bleeding printer, which claims to be wireless, but hasn't spoken to our network or the computer in months. So today I fixed it's little red wagon by getting a spare cord out of my cables box in the garage, and fitting it. Now there was no excuse, and before I knew it, had these printed out :

IMG_7099.JPG

IMG_7098.JPG

Why (I hear the assembled masses cry)? Well, I chose the larger and less intricate of the 2, carefully cut the letters out with a razor blade, and drew the letters onto the top of the box :

It's lunch break now on Easter Saturday, so this afternoon I'll break out the burner, and get to it - I hope. We were going to go out, but after I went to the big green box store this morning, which was pandemonium, I suggested to Irene that maybe we'll do that on Monday. It's like Shoppageden out there. :scared: :( I've never seen so many cars in the Hardware shop car park, and as I left there were cars queuing on the road to get in. Anyone would think the store hadn't been open for weeks..... :eyecrazy:

Back later - I hope.

Lyndon, I sounds like you have planted the seed.

Great to see you with a To Do List..

We don't go out over Easter unless its real early, it is bedlam here as well and I can not understand why..

Just a small project 2/3 the way down the to-do list...

Look forward to where "Buy land and build new house and garage" slots in to the list...

The big green box store down my way was heaving as well, but despite the 20-60% sale at Supercheap they were fairly quiet - I don't understand the dynamics either.

The sign on the shed gets the nod here. You have been busy, Easter has been good to you.

Simon

Thanks - yes - I love 4 days off, in a row..... With no prior arranged commitments!

Yep - all the maddies get on the road at Easter (& Christmas), and I think that's why us professional drivers prefer to stay off the road. And the nutters shop like there's no tomorrow, it's as if they think the world is ending. Friday night at the supermarkets was berserk, so I've been told by Lauren.

And the To-Do List is helping enormously, even if I do keep adding to it!

Just a small project 2/3 the way down the to-do list...

Yes, you picked it. That job was added recently. And that was because the guy who bought my business 4 years ago, and who stopped paying me for it 2 years ago, has been back in contact, and has started re-payments. What happened to him won't be repeated here, but it was a salutory lesson in what NOT to do in business. And while he's only repaying at about 15% of his previous dollars, at least it's something. So the Minister for War & Finance has agreed that the money can go toward the resto of the XJ6. :3gears:

So I hope that starts sometime early next year. Lauren's fiance and I are going to pull the engine out and give it to my old XJ6 mechanic, who will arrange to have it wet sleeved and everything done up. While that's being done I'll clean up the engine bay and when the engine is ready, the car will go to him for reinstalation and getting everything moving again (probably shocks, brake pads, and a few other things).

Ok - the finalisation of today's activities coming up!

Eaaster Saturday - part 2.

So - after lunch activities.....

I broke out the wood burning kit, and the electrical reducer as it's 110V :

IMG_7105.JPG

Chose a fine round point to start with for all the small bits (that's what she said to me last night, I think) :

IMG_7106.JPG

And got the finer points done :

IMG_7108.JPG

Then broke out a broader bit for the rest :

IMG_7109.JPG

It's the first time I've ever done this, and it was interesting. Like colouring in, but with a bleeding hot pencil..... :shocking: :shocking:

Anyway, this was at the 1/2 way mark :

IMG_7110.JPG

Coming out ok - eh?

And here it is at the end :

IMG_7111.JPG

It was an interesting process, because as it's only plywood, and thin, as the wood burnt in places it would create a slight trough, making it difficult to pull across the letter. But it got there in about an hour....

Then I broke out some Merbau coloured stain :

IMG_7112.JPG

And got a first coat on. I'll do another tomorrow, then poly coat it. I also decided that a bright silver latch wasn't going to cut it, so I sprayed a first coat on that too :

IMG_7113.JPG

And that was it for today. There was the sound of thunder just as I was finishing, but that was AJ arriving in his 1977 XC Falcon :

IMG_7114.JPG

The BA that he's been running around in lately had a bit of a catastrophic failure :

AJ%27s%20Falcon%201.jpg

That's because of this :

AJ%27s%20Falcon%20A.jpg

It now runs a 6.2 litre twin turbo quad cam version of the Boss 5.4 motor.... putting out around 600 hp at the rear wheels, with a manual 6 speed.....

Anyway - that just about wraps up today. It's been a beautiful day compared to the 34C heat of yesterday. And after the summer's run of abysmally hot weekends, it was good to get back in the shed.

Wow Lyndon you may have been missing for a few but when you returned you delivered some great updates. Exciting to hear you might be looking for new digs and restoring of you XJ's engine. That is always exciting.

Great job on the box and the woodburning label. I picked one of those up at a thrift store a few months back and have yet to use it. Now I have another project to add to my list.

Glad you had a great weekend.

Lyndon, I was worried you were under the weather or someone from Eden kidnapped you to serve on a rogue whaling ship. Now I see you were typing an epic update.

It's good you marked that box Label Maker in a very permanent way. Boxes have a way of going walkabout if they are plain. Perhaps not at your home but around here they do.

I hope you find/build your retirement paradise. It's wonderful to wake up in a place you love with someone you love.

The XJ6 sounds like a wonderful To-do, especially if an unexpected windfall moves it higher on the list. I have a special soft spot for six-cylinder engines and look forward to following your progress.

My hobby as a Fortune Teller sees very expensive billet steel in AJ's future. Looking at the clutch, that's a timely input shaft failure.

Good to have you back! :rocker:

Thanks guys for looking in.

I will update, hopefully tomorrow, on the final finish of that project.

Have a great week.

Easter Weekend 2018 - history

So, as Easter 2018 slides into the memory, what became of our gallant hero....?

Well, I got impatient with the Label Maker box. I gave one coat of a teak stain and varnish (because the stain had made it too orange), and a couple of hours later I cut out the Kaizen foam insert :

IMG_7115.JPG

Attached the latches, and bid it a fond goodnight :

IMG_7116.JPG

I then cleaned up the workbench :

IMG_7118.JPG

Crossed another thing off the To-Do list :

IMG_7120.JPG

And then we toddled off into the city for Easter lunch with Irene's sister and BIL. Kids came too which was good.

Monday was a bit of fiddling around with gardens and things until my internals chucked a wobbly, after which I spent several hours in a lounge chair, watching recorded cable shows, recovering enough to go a friend's place for Easter drinks in the late afternoon.

Any old how, today was back to the grind, and a fellow Manager brought me in a present :

IMG_7121.JPG

That's a light bar off his tiny little fold up trailer, that he used at his holiday house down the coast to haul a tinny to the lake (about 30 feet - the distance to the lake, not the size of the boat - keep up!). It has the original Northern Territory (****** big outback state at the top of Australia) trailer plate on it, and he has decided to register it now, and gave me the plate, if I could get it off.... No problem, broke out the Dremel and grinding disk, and GotRdone (as you 'Mericans are fond of saying ):

IMG_7122.JPG

After it came off (revealing probably it's first rego number) :

IMG_7123.JPG

And after a quick clean :

IMG_7124.JPG

This one will go into my collection, as I didn't previously have any NT plates. And the NT is the only Australian state that I know of the uses rego squares on the plate to indicate month and year or rego (very forward thinking of them).

The light bar will be returned to him tomorrow.

And that's all she wrote.

Lyndon
So - it's goodnight from me, and it's goodnight from him! ;):beer2: :hellobye: (The 2 Ronnies (1971 - 1987)

An interesting fact on the NT plate I did not know. In Victoria now we have done away with the label on the windscreen. Unless you are on one of the club permit schemes and that way you still have a label on the windscreen.

Simon

Yes - NSW got rid of them 2 years ago as well. These plates were last registered in NT in July 99....
