Cleaned up the buck 110 some as well as cleaned and oiled the sheath. The blade needs some attention with some progressively fine sandpaper still...

Sheath cleaned and oiled -Seems to be home or custom made; possibly from a kit?:

a couple of fun finds
.50 for a stamped steel Blackhawk 49977 ratchet with the selector broken off.
$11 for a toledo threading machine for black pipe with one set of thread cutters
$6 for Buck Rogers own power drill! A Speedway 79 from 1950-52 - it has an amazing look! it also has the optional jacobs chuck and original chuck key.. but the greatest part was that it came out at a time when grounded sockets were not standard so it has a separate ground wire to be plugged in (actually screwed in) first. I have one other Black & Decker drill with a similar grounding system - but on this speedway i am sure it is the original plug from researching it.

Question - I am thinking of polishng the drill for display - would that ruin it?

here is an ad for the drill - https://books.google.com/books?id=t...ZTAO#v=onepage&q=speedway 79 drill ad&f=false

Hmm. Might be interwar. You can't tell sizes because they're not marked and you didn't inside mic them yet? Or what? My guess would be /32nds. EDIT: What's the drive size? 1/2-inch?

Today my wife, daughter, and I drove to an indoor flea market. Been there before, no great expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. Did plug a hole in my set of early Bonaloy combos. And picked up this nifty 7" Kraeuter Hy-Power side cutting pliers (2801-7), discontinued in 1942. Back then, the list price was $2.75, so I saved a whopping $2.25, which takes most of the sting out of what I paid for the combo (the vendor wasn't present to haggle). Love the grip pattern on those old Kraeuters.
Daughter is working toward a BFA in metals and jewelry, and I liked this display, but it didn't catch her fancy. So off to a local Greek restaurant for lunch. Loved the shredded-beef grinder.

I am in favor of polishing/restoration. :) I think the idea of that "ruining" stuff is mostly just a thing in coin collecting, unless done utterly incompetently.

Not true in my experience! Many tool collectors prefer to preserve the patina or aged appearance, and a tool that has had its original finish altered with a wheel, or worse, new paint or Parkerizing, etc - regardless of how well its accomplished, is considered ruined. Having said that, rust is not patina, and it depends on the piece in question. That stainless steel drill case, for example, would look great cleaned up and spiffed up.

Finally an estate sale that has a good selection of tools was posted in my area this weekend. I got there about 10mins early and I got in a line of about 20 people to the door of the barn. There was a CM block grinder posted in the pictures and that was my main objective. I figured I’d miss out on it but when the flood gates opened I managed to head straight to it and pick it up [emoji2]. Dropped it off at the sellers desk/ counter and manager to pick up a few other things. USA CM 1/2 drive set just missing a spark plug socket, cool cast sears wheel dresser, 3 plates, rubber mallet, Japan 3lbs mini sledge, handle I was hoping would go with the sledge but doesn’t match, and 2 Williams 1/2 rats s-52 and s-53 which is super cool cos I used it to break some head bolts yest on a mag 360 it’s actually longer than my 1/2 breakers [emoji23]. All up paid $54.

Only 1/4hp but cleaned up and new cord / wheels. Works better/more powerful than my 1/3hp CM Offshore version. Oh and it has the owners manual too.

This is my bounty from two weekends ago, I got the display cabinet for my hot wheels. A little work and for $5 I think it's a better display then those $50 plastic deals you find online.

Also the big wheel was a $5 purchase for the younger child, it has a odd hub on the big wheel and I can't find any info on what the deal is with it. Anyone familiar with the front wheel setup? It acts like it slips at certain speed and then grabs when it gets fast enough.

I think the metal housing power tools are an exception to the do not polish thing, most of them are utterly worthless dirty, not that great as users, and can bring something when cleaned up. Maybe not the famous ones, but the more average ones.

Last weekend
Couple mediocre pebbles
Barcalo DBE
Ford wrench for gate handle
, circle H 3/8 breaker
, blackhawk 1/2 square on both ends socket,
SK 17 impact to replace another one my Milwaukee gun ruined,
big Snap on punch
Fuel/AC disconnector
M18 brushless drill

attachment.php

After cleanup, bar, punch, and barcalo got 2 goats of BLO and baked @375 in toastrr oven.

This weekend;

No actually that's pretty cool. We played with matchbox cars in dirt and gravel driveways. They didn't last very long.

The fact that I have a collection of those little one serving syrup pourers from 50's restaurants says something.

Nice score on the block grinder, I8. Estate sale had one this past weekend on a neat little multi drawer wooden stand, but had it priced at $175. Ouch.

Weekend Finds

Hit one estate sale and the flea market this weekend.

Estate sale had a nice Morgan Chicago 410(?) vise for $55 that I lost to the guy in front of me. Oh well, good for him. I ended up with a Schumacher manual charger for an E tank project, the CM drivers, a CM 4067 tap handle, CM 25'x1" tape, a Chinesium drill press vise, and a Nicholson mini bow saw. $22 for all.

Flea market yielded some pretty clean CM -vv- large combos, 18-22mm and a 24mm. Also a Thorsen 3/8 flex head that I didn't notice was Taiwanese until I got home. $20

Lol, if I can't afford to real thing then I can at least collect the little ones. I tend to grab the ones I like such as Chevelle's, camaros, Ford fairlanes, Ford trucks, and random ones that I found interesting.

Plus my daughter likes to play with them so I tend to grab some for her when I find them.

I'm diggin that nicholson mini bow saw! Perfect size for trimming small branches that are too big for loppers. That's still a good deal for those large size metric CMan wrenches in that condition.

Thanks Jason. Perfectly, they picked up exactly where my current set ends. I forgot I also snagged these 5 Lewis parts bins from Restore at lunch on Friday. 22Lx16Wx10D. $1 ea.

Well, I was out of town (up on the Canada border) for business last weekend, so nothing for me. But I also forgot to put up the week before's finds, so here goes. Not much was posted out there but there was a listing for a town flea market at the fairgounds. Well, it was really an small antiques show. Digging around, I found the following: Snap-on F70n, e code, Proto rubber mallet, Starrett catalog #26 and some glass door knobs for my old house. I then headed to a "dads house" sale, but spotted a clean out estate sale on the last day while driving over. There I got a Hoppes airgun cleaning kit, 3/4 npt tap in the wrapper, some unopened sandpaper things, Wizard break lever and some packing for valve glands.

The sale I was heading to at Dads house was a bust.
The next day, the wife and I went to a real antiques show in Portland, where we saw many things for our house we could have spent a lot of money on, but I picked up only these three things:

Nice momentary stop switch, Starrett 2-3 Micrometer and some weird gord kinda thing.

So, for inquiring minds (sorry for taking so long to answer), when I do batches of ammo I have a powder pan on the bench (think balance beam scale pan about 4” dia) and I use it to dip a pre measured scoop from and refill the trickler. I had dosed about another ounce or so of powder into the pan finishing my charges just prior to cleaning up. Took my ground straps off, went outside with a blend type material pullover on. When I came back to start cleaning up I didn’t put the straps on and reached for the powder pan and whoosh. Which wouldn’t have been so bad if it hadn’t been so close to the plastic 1lb container of powder that the two were touching and the lid was off if I remember right. So, in all, it was just over a pound of powder that flashed. Wife saw it happen and said I was standing inside a fire ball. I’m lucky..... learn what not to do from me.

Okay, this is the first I'm reading about this and I'm not referring to the goats as I assume those are coats. ;-) Can someone explain this process and what it does? Sounds like something that could be very useful. Thanks!

Old school rust prevention. (more like Ancient)
BLO (boiled linseed oil) has been used for centuries to prevent rust. Most of the time it is put on in layers and let to dry between coats. (Sometimes takes days or weeks depening on conditions)

If you bake it on, it dries faster and slightly harder. (If you burn it on, it will create a brown or black(ish) finish) BEWARE - this can cause noxious fumes and/or smoke. Don't do this in your kitchen oven where food is cooked, you'll never be allowed to live it down.

Sorry, I hit the wrong nail(use your hammer only on metal nails, not the finger ones) too many times to ever type well on a phone.

I thought I described the process.take your tool,(the metal one) and wipe a moderate coat of oil on it, then heat it up around the smoke point for a bit. An old tool catalog would describe this as a 'baked oil finish'. I'm sure you have seen it on a cast iron pan.
So its a rust resistant fairly durable coating. BLO you don't have to bake, it doesn't have much color, and smells bad in the shop while leaving the tool sticky for a day or few as it dries. So I baked it to speed things up, and each baking or layer gives more color. I went 375 for an hour pretty much at randomlet it cool in the oven, put another coat on, and rebaked.
The Barcalo was pretty dark to start(might have originaly been an oil finish), and I like how it came out. The SO punch I wirewheeled the taper and only got a little BLO on there with my greasy paw, you can see the spot. The Craftsman bar has pitting, and I am not a big enough fan to polish it. I might buff it a little to see what happens.

As jakemac mentions, BLO is an industrial product based on flax oil. Dont use it on food equipment, and cook it in a well vented(I use a sacrifial toaster oven outside) for food grade, use flax oil, its espensive, but has the highest burn point of any cooking oil with no heavy metal additives.

Also, if you use BLO, be very careful of the rags. They can simultaneously combust.
No joke, a member here lost his garage to this.

Yes, I've heard that is a risk with any oil-based substance on rags (motor oil, oil-based paint/stain/finish, etc). Scary stuff. To my understanding, the thing to do is spread the rags out flat/hanging until they're dry - it's the instinctive throwing of used rags into a pile that sets up the combustion-prone environment, as vapors get trapped within the pile.

Most of the time I hang my rags off the side of the shop trash can for a few days to let them dry out. If I'm going through a lot of rags on a project, then I use the disposal can.

^^^ That's what I do... Usually any BLO or Poly rags will dry overnight and become stiff as a board... Then I throw them in the trash outside. I try not to keep any rags with any kind of combustible material in my garage trash can.

I should add - I do the same thing with wet paper towels.
I try not to put anything wet in my trash can if I can help it.

Was out today at a flea market and spotted a Bay State Anvil marked on one side.

Dimensions from tip of horn to rear were 19-1/2"L. Height from bottom to top was 9-1/4" H and anvil top was 3-1/4" W. Weight around 90 pounds.

Someone put oil on it rather than cleaning it up, so attached pics reflect that condition.

I didn't buy it given condition and price at $250. Rang like bell on front horn and back, but in middle, it was more like a thud.

However, took pics and attached the info as there wasn't much info on Bay State anvils or who the actual mfg might have been.

Mike
