My new favourite wrenches.

Like a lot of folks here, I spend a fair amount of time turning wrenches. I’m not a pro, but I restore and set up machine tools, tinker around with classic cars, maintain four modern ones, and generally do all the stuff that needs doing, from appliance repairs to plumbing!

Like a lot of folks, I have some favourite wrenches. I just love my old British made Britool ‘RJ’ Series combination wrenches. Just the right length, superbly durable, and so comfortable to use. Despite many other wrenches, it’s these I reach for in preference.

But sadly, while I own these in British Standard sizes, and American, I don’t have many metric. I’ve picked up one of two used, but being out of production for 40 years it’s not easy! ( Later ones are less to my taste).

So, I have some Snap On. Superb tools in every respect. Superbly made (probably better than the Britool) beautifully finished and durable too. Perhaps just a little harder on the hand than the rounded Britool.

Another member here pointed out how similar the Hazet 600’s are to the old Britool. That’s true, I’ve compared side by side. So I’ve picked up a few of those too, mainly in odd sizes I didn’t own before. No complaints here. Lovely tough tools, and the matte finish is practical. Maybe a little square if you use them a lot.

The first picture shows them all for comparison!

But this month I’ve been sorting out my road box(es). I’ve had about four for different tasks, and am trying to reduce to two. I had a set of Snap On wrenches in one, up to 17mm, and thought I’d add a couple of larger sizes. But what to get. Most of my Snap On has come on a deal of some sort and as folks know, it’s mega costly getting individual tools.

I was just about to order some Hazet when I noticed that Williams Super Combo’s (and indeed all Williams tools) have recently appeared on UK amazon at reasonable prices. (It’s always been there, but priced like Snap On).

I always liked Williams, I have some of their wrenches my Grandfather owned, so I ordered three!

Wow! What can I say, other than ‘wrench perfection’! I just love these things! Sensible length, much thicker than some, lovely chrome, but most importantly what a superb shape to hold. They have a feel and balance that’s almost ‘vintage’ - I feel like I’m picking up an old Armstrong or Billings! Everything that, to me, an American wrench should be! These really are my new favourites!

Of course, I’m probably ‘preaching to the converted’ here, but many may not have seen these, or just seen pictures, and not realise his good they feel in reality!

The second picture shows one of mine! It doesn’t do them credit Though!

I'd like to get a few modern Williams wrenches. The collection in fractional sizes is all over the place and I'm looking for something to keep at the shop with a little consistency.

Also, I really like the later Billings alloy wrenches. The gentle taper towards the box end is very nice. Makes it just a bit easier to wrap you hand and really pull omn it.

U.S.A. Made! And you know it as soon as you pick 'em up!

You do have to be a little careful with Williams though, as they offer both!

Living in the U.K. I wouldn't bother shipping a Taiwanese wrench that I could buy here. These are well worth the effort though!

The purpose of that wide-thin beam profile is so they're easy to flip over when positioning the open end after each turn. Flip the Snap-on over in your fingers and then go try one of your other wrenches.

The Williams SuperCombos are one of my favorites as well. Craftsman offered something very similar under the Premium line for a couple of years, but they're terribly difficult to find here in the states for a reasonable price.

I still prefer my WrightGrip satin finish, but the Williams are longer which is nice.

My favorites are (in no particular order):

1. Snap on ratcheting box end (1st gen)
2. S-K X Frames
3. Gear Wrench long box end/ratcheting box end wrenches
4. Snap on Open/Box combo (ca 1985)

Nice looking wrench. Do you know if the USA ones come in a satin finish option?

As far as I can ascertain from the catalog the only USA made combination wrenches that are satin finish are the really big sizes of SuperCombo.
