Box is 9 & 3/4" long x 4" wide and 1 & 3/4" deep. No markings on it. Would have held 6 wrenches. The grey looks like it might be a repaint- No hints of the original color though.

same size, is there a slight taper to the ends where they mate?

That gray box definitely looks tapered to me. Look at the inside of the top, upper right. You can see it gets smaller towards the back side of the box.

Saw an ad for a woodworking vise this afternoon on CL. I take a look and there is a blue vise looking at me. I'm thinking it can't be but it is a Record No 52 woodworking vise. The guy is asking $30. Ad has been posted for 20 minutes. Short story long, he agrees to hold it until I can get there. The vise checks out all good. As I'm reaching to get the money out of my wallet I see on the shelf above me red Starrett boxes piled one one top of another. I offer $60, he counters with $70 and he throws in the crate and the bucket. Two Brown & Sharpe 0-1" micrometers, Starrett 1-2" & 2-3" micrometers and a Starrett protractor and depth gauge. Oh yeah, that was $70 total. I'd have paid $70 for the vise. A lucky day!

YOU ****!!! That Starrett C493B protractor is $79 new on Amazon by itself!

I have a very nice vintage Lufkin version in plain steel, and I always wanted a satin chrome version so I wouldn't have to wipe it with a light coating of way oil after every time I touched it. The Lufkin chromed versions are like hens teeth, so I was considering finding a chromed Starrett like yours, but other things took precedence and I made do with what I had. Totally jealous!!

Additionally, I have that same Cleveland Twist Drill index, does that mean I'm in the club? Lol! I can see the copper poking thru in a couple spots but I didn't scrub the black stuff off.

Thanks Dave! I had no idea they were that expensive. I guess I should have. If it's Starrett it's gonna be pricey but then they make good products.

I already put that protractor to work.

PS I love Lufkin stuff. Got several machinists squares and a double square that are Lufkin.

Mike, good on ya for putting it to work! One suggestion I have is check it against another machinist protractor, like for a combo square if you have one, or a known flat reference surface. One of my old coworkers picked up a way older flawless plain steel NOS in box Starrett, and the rectangle was off of the degree etchings almost 2°. We were both shocked, bc Starrett is usually top notch, and for the prices they charge, in depth repairs shouldn't be needed out of the box. Fixing that required a custom fixture on a surface grinder, and top & sides needed dusted to bring 4 corners back to 90° once bottom trued to etchings. We chalked it up to **** happens, but my buddy's protractor is now good.

In light of that, I checked my Lufkin and it was off 2° also, WTF! and we were checking these to recently certed granite surface plates. I got lucky and mine had a burr on the bottom edge which was easily stoned down.

Lufkin did make excellent tools. I collect their tape measures from before they were sent to China by way of Cooper. I also have a lot of their machinist tools as well. They suffer from poor brand recognition and can be picked up cheap, imo every bit as good, some instances better, than Starrett and B&S. Novel complete! Lol

I'm pretty sure I posted mine in that thread, but if not seems like there is no shortage of them on the GJ. Lol

If you posted them on the drill index thread, you are automatically in the club. After that all bets are off.
We went to an estate sale in Martinez, CA this morning. It was a family run sale I found on Craigslist. When we arrived the woman running it gave us a huge paper grocery bag and told us anything that fits in the bag is $10.00 so I did my best to fill it with rusty treasures. The second picture is some D-I and possibly Duro unmarked 1/4" drive sockets with some hacksaw blades. The next picture is a bag containing tiny drill bits with a local address. Next is some Craftsman. The 1/4" -v- ratchet cleaned right up as did the D-I wartime sockets. The next shot is three Wright 1/2" drive sockets from 1944. The last picture is what I thought would be Diamond pliers but they were marked Xcelite.

Sorry for the long post in advance

So my search for a larger lathe popped up this ad.

“Older metal lathe with extra chuck, attachments and tools. Made by Atlas for Craftsman. Works excellent. Must sell. Sold as pictured. $750”

These are the pictures from the ad.

2ea6945efdb08c2dad2dec430a57281a.jpg

I message he seller asking questions if he had a 3 jaw chuck and the gear and belt guards. He said he thought yes to the chuck but wasn’t sure about the covers. So I offered $500.
He said he had many people already offer $500 and he’d been countering with $650. He said he would take $600 if i was serious. He even said he would deliver it for $50 more. This conversation happened Tuesday and we agreed that I would come Friday to pick it up. I was only expecting the lathe as pictured and he extra chuck.

When I get there, which is a huge shop where they manufacture diesel generators, the guy brings me to the shop where his uncle had the lathe. He uncovers the lathe and it runs nice and actually quieter than most atlas lathes. Then he points to a cart full of accessories when i ask about the guards. Unfortunately no guards but here are the pictures of everything.

So it’s a 12x36 craftsman atlas 101.27440 metal lathe.
Came with a stand which had a million bolts holding the steel top to the legs. Took me forever to disassemble. Luckily everything was covering in oil so no rust on the entire lathe
I still didn’t unload the lathe and stand top but quickly see the following attachments.

Can anyone identify what the stand is from. It doesn’t look like an atlas stand.

Milling attachment
3 jaw chuck, small 4 jaw chuck, and the 4 jaw chuck on the lathe
Taper attachment
3/4 HP craftsman motor with the original forward/reverse switch. A second motor which I’m not sure why it was installed, and wired to the switch on the front of he lathe.
Tailstock turret attachment.
Few lathe dogs
A bunch of tool holders.
Tooling and centers
A light.

$600 and all I need to do is simple green it and find a belt and gear guards.

Yeah I was going to ask about that, I noticed the second motor dangling off the back and the two plugs...

Figured maybe it was a different RPM or he added it to run both at the same time for more power?

Wow Bagged, nice find on the lathe!

A couple estate sales were going on nearby to me yesterday, so played hookie (good to be self employed) to check them out:

Plomb Los Angeles driver, Proto adjustabel, SK 9/16 deep, Diamond slip joints, Snap-on 1/2 combo, some .177 pellets, chip brush and Channelock dikes. $9. Lets see what I find today?

You could sell the cast iron legs for more than what you paid for the whole shabang. Slap a 3 inch thick live edge slab of oak on top and it's worth a couple of grand at least.

Yes I could but I’m not going to be selling them, unless times get rough and I need the cash, or if I find another set.

I got this tachometer from an Estate sale today for $5. The name on it says Buick, but I cannot find any cars to match the bracket from a Buick. If anyone knows I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Well I am way behind in posting my finds so I will start with yesterday.

The first estate sale pictures looked real good, large machinist's vise, cabinets, tools and lots more. I was second in line and snagged the vise, it was an Athol 624!
Pic 1 and 2. Handle is a bit bent and jaws are not great but no obvious welds or damage. I then grabbed the tags off of the cabinets which were a top and bottom but I just realized the pictures didn't come out at all so will repost them later.
Pic 3. I also picked up the Plumb broad axe that will be goin going to a hatchet collector I know. The green toolbox yielded up Bonney, Indestro and Duro Chrome sockets, unknown torque wrench, Mac wrench, Mustang socket, Proto Pliers, Snap On DBE, Truecraft USA sockets and a Wright socket. It also had the Craftsman sockets and chisel on the right. The handsaw is a Craftsman as are the nutdrivers in the bag in the upper right corner.
Pic 4. More odds and ends. The flex shaft with motor has no name and no switch, I assume it was used with a foot switch.
I spent $112 total.
I seem to be missing some more pictures, will have to retake them.

Pic 5. Estate sale #2, spent $20 even. More tape measures for my collection, German compass, Lufkin 50' tape measure, unknown wood handle brass hammer, Craftsman bit driver and holders, ignition pliers and ball peen hammer on the right, Blackhawk stubby, more bits and holders and cleaner and trans fluid.

Pic 6, last sale of the day for me. $35 total, Craftsman 1977 toolbox inside were a few good items, Xcelite 5/8" nut driver, Craftsman speed handle, magnetic socket inserts, Wizard clutchhead screwdriver and a few other pieces. The little silver things in the bottom are keychain tools from a local service station, the padlock is a Slaymaker.

You have potentially a very rare piece there Levaughn. that is the console mounted tach used on late 60's GS 400 models. Check some buick blog sites and GS owners sites. It could be worth a lot more than you paid.

For $5 I'm gonna say YOU **** for that purchase.:beer:

- The long DOE wrench is a MAC D9L (3/4 x 7/8) with classic MAC hex throat openings.

- The smaller tappet wrench is an unmarked (but it's a Vlchek) “90A” (7/32 x 7/16)

- MUSTANG MS 57 hinge handle (I found a MUSTANG MS 58 speeder last year, so I am right on pace to complete a MUSTANG ½-inch drive socket set by 2032.)

- Milwaukee Tool and Forge 1/2-inch drive socket with a 13/16" service opening marked with the size and the "MTF" monograph

- Snap-On SF-240 (3/4") 3/8-inch drive deep socket with an "E" (1944) code

- The small box with OD green wrinkle paint finish contains a complete WWII 13-piece Husky 1/2-inch drive socket set with a ratchet ("11-44" date code), short extension, and eleven (11) sockets, all caked in old, dried, yellow BLO. If I can remember what thread we were cataloging examples of these New Britain made wartime wrenches with WWII date codes, I will add close ups there.

- The bigger OD green box is also WWII, but unknown make and use. I'll be posting more of that on the toolbox thread.

- Millers Falls No. 25 (25-leaf) feeler gauge

- And last but not least a cheapo pressed steel case pocket knife, made – taking a grand leprechaun-size bow on St Paddy's Day – in the REPUBLIC OF IRELAND!

We hit a small estate sale in Richmond, CA that was just a few miles from where my Jeep was made in 11/42. The Channellocks have the 1933 Canadian patent.

Hit the Restore at lunch on Tuesday and snagged this Husky cut off tool for $15. Probably reconditioned but it looks brand new and functions perfectly. 0ef60c64338e1c69107635f6a39de34a.jpg

Estate sale this morning, 4th in line.
A pretty complete and hardly used Wizard 1/2" drive set. All sockets are there, might just be missing slider bar for one of the plug sockets. It looks like the label was affixed to the bottom of the box rather than inside the lid. Is that normal?

Estwing lady slipper, mishmash of Indestro, Easco and other USA sockets, Western Auto Taiwanese 3/8" flex, a no name Taiwanese stubby ratchet with 1/2" head(?!?), NOS Ampro steering wheel puller, no name Taiwanese set of obstruction wrenches.

Hardly used sets of CM vv combos, SAE and metric. Metric set included the extra 18mm

And lastly, a set of offset DBE's that have no maker's marks that I can find. Hoping someone can help me ID them.

There was also a later model 1/3 hp block grinder with light, tray and glasses for $90, but I passed as I just bought one a few weeks ago. Total spent at the estate sale was $60.
