Pesky Toyota wheel nuts

Tire season will soon be upon us and I am dreading those when nuts - a 21mm doesn't fit the all and a 22 had a bit too much play. Anyone have a recommendation for what size / brand to use please? Thanks!

Strange that. It's unlikely but have you tried a 20? Otherwise I would phone up the dealership and ask them what size to confirm. I haven't seen anything other than 17 19 or 21 in a standard car or light van before.

Off the top of my head I thought 22 mm was the size for both our Tundra and our Sequoia. I'll have to check to see if a 22 mm socket is loose.

I don't know the year/make/model you're dealing with, but wife's Camry is 21mm. 22mm is a common size for 3/4+ ton pickups.

You're in a rust prone area, so if the lug nuts are the chrome/stainless cap covered type, its likely the metal underneath corroded and swelled. At that point, just find a socket, preferably 6pt,. that fits tight to get them off, then replace. OEM is my choice.

There is actually a double ended 18.5mm/19.5mm for the Ford/Chrysler lug nuts...the 19.5mm side fits the swollen nuts (lol) and the 18.5mm side fits the nut once the chrome/stainless cap has popped off.

I don't know if there is the same for 21mm/22mm.

For our 3 Toyotas from 1993 to 2014, they're all 21 mm. I just did a brake job and wheel bearing replacement on a 2013 Corolla and it was 21mm as well. what's the year and model? Someone may have lost the original and replaced them.

I would just use whatever gets them off and change the lugs as others have said. Especially if you change your tires over seasonally. Im sure different brans of lug nuts can have different hex sizes but i bet its more likely the smaller size is just worn out. Or the acorn style nuts could be swollen.

They are all officially 21mm affairs - there is some sort of chrome cap that gets distorted over time and makes nut slightly smaller than a 22mm. Using a 22 further compounds the distortion and eventually we need to replace the whole set.

With the exception of the 5 lug full size trucks (tundra, landcruiser, and sequoia that use M14 studs), all toyota cars and 6 lug trucks use 21mm hex lug nuts. All the 5 lug full size stuff uses 22mm hex lug nuts.

I may have to get one of those CTA 1799 sockets. Most of the time I can get by using an inch size socket for a distorted metric, either bigger or smaller, but the 21MM is a real PIA when rust swollen, and there is no close inch size.

Yep, yer nuts are swole.

Remove them by any means necessary, terminate with extreme prejudice, and install new.

Matco and Snap-On both sell the 21mm/21.5mm lug nut flip socket. There's no such thing as a 21.5mm lug nut but they make the socket for damaged/distorted lug nuts which are somewhat common on Dodge's.

Toyota's almost universally have 21mm lugnuts with the exception of the full size trucks/SUV's. You might want to consider just getting new lug nuts or going to a junkyard for a cheap undamaged set.

Thanks for the pointers on the flip socket. Both trucks come by on Fridays, so I will inquire. The lug nuts are $2 apiece, but you will be surprised how many customers choose to not replace them.
