i have used that stuff before..... Is it gooey and sticky?

I could have had fun with this but for once in my life, I took the high road. It would have been fun though.

All we need now is to combine this thread with the one wanting to know about the best knee pads...:bounce:

I must get my mind out of the gutter. Nah, I wouldn't be me if I did that.

Welcome to The Bleeder's Club!

Why would the guy at the store think you couldn't use a lube that is designed to protect sensitive and expensive engine internals in a simple ratchet? :headscrat

I love the RLL. I might also try the Permatex green, which is not supposed to bleed as much...but I still have a good 3/8 of my bottle of red to go before I do that!

I bought a container of the RLL, did a couple of ratchets with it, they leak all over the place, waste of money. When I get time I'll tear them back down and put grease in them, probably Mobil 28. Anything has to be better than having a ratchet leaking something that resembles red chainsaw bar oil.

not to hijack, i have had this tube of lawson high pressure green grease for a few years. Lawson products are all really good. We were supposed to use it on pump splines at a forklift company i worked. I never used it but heard good things. It was something like $16 a tube cost to us. I'm sure customer cost would be $30.

My thoughts as well. I use mobil 28 at work (as I'm sure you know), and amsoil wheel bearing grease at home. Both work equally as well, without the slobber. When I'm working on a seat that costs more than my vehicle, or a refreshment bar that costs more than my house, I don't need a ratchet leaking **** out.

I used RLL a few times....still have a white terry towel under some of my 3/8 ratchets until they stop bleeding. I always have used Break Free CLP & Break Free's Lube. Works great. Doesn't bleed, protects against rusting. Been using on my guns, offshore reels, for years, now my ratchets too! IMO hands down better than RLL.

EP grease is Elroy's choice as well. That Lawson tube is mostly likely #2.

EP-0

as in extreme pressure - zero

Available in 5 gallon pails only.

Sorry, but you asked

As stated EP-"ZERO" is ONLY available in 5 gallons pails. Extremely difficult if not impossible to get it in tubes.

It seems to me that ratchets need something thick enough to slightly damp the movement of the ratchet pawl (to give that "smooth" feel), to provide a bearing film at pressure points, and to not leak -- yet be thin enough to permit the spring to move quickly, and to not hinder ratchet pawl movement (thus allowing for full pawl engagement).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That said, is the GLL thicker than the RLL?

so the lawson is ep-2 or your 2nd choice?

EP-O is zero weight grease with "extreme pressure" additives. EP-2 is #2 weight also with extreme pressure additives. EP-2 is also Elroy's second choice for ratchets. Look at the label. Does it say GL-2 ??

GL-2 would be a #2 lubricating grease but not necessarily with EP classification.

I use Luberplate White grease for engine assembly and other machine parts but a more stickey grease for wheel bearings. 40 years ago in Naval avaition we had a military sticky grease labled "GRG" and had the nick name peanut butter. It was great for holding stuff in place or picking up alumnum parts in tight places.....

If i was to use wheel brearing grease, how much do you put in?

I;ve been useing Fluid film. It makes ratchets smmooooottthhhh.

It depends.

For the lower tooth count ratchets, you can really pack it in there, and it makes a huge difference.

For the higher tooth count, you can just use a thin film or else they tend to jam up.

Mine are all fine tooth, I rub it on with fingers, then use an acid brush to wipe off all the excess. You just need a light film, I think it's retarded to fill a ratchet to the top. A f'ing engine turns at 800 rpms idle (or so), and the break in lube is only .001 or so thick, with pistons firing against it.

Unless you're exerting that force, and spinning your ratchet at 800 rpms, I just don't see the point.

Canadian Tire SHOULD have it. Ours does. Its on the shelf with the other Permatex products.

You just need to find someone in parts that's not brain dead:lol_hitti I know thats kinda hard with the ones theyre hiring at Canadian Tire lately.

Anyone ever try the Permatex Ultra Slick Extreme Graphite as ratchet lube?

How much permatex are you people putting in there??? half a bottle?

When i lube ratchet i put oil on the pawl, under the pawl, on the gear ( teeth on the body on a round head), spin it with an extencion, then wipe some of the exess out if it's got alot in it.

Merk once posted a pic (I now assume in jest) of a SO ratchet filled to the brim with RLL.

It's hard to quantify how much I put in...I am a drizzler. I drizzle some on the pawl, the gear, and the teeth in the head. A little goes a long way, though.

I've used about 1/2 bottle in the process of lubing probably 50 or so ratchets...maybe a bit more than 50, I lost track.
