I'll bust a sweat in the winter just changing the oil; so I'm usually reachin' for a bottle of water and not alcohol when working. But after the work's done; look out....

You beat me to it.

We used to have a canadian on my hockey team and half of his equipment bag was filled with Labatt. He drank it out of his water bottle the whole game.

Just another reason to hate goalies, they can drink and play at the same time. Maybe that's why I like golfing....

My personal opinion is that 1 or two should be fine, but the real alcoholism kicks in as part of the victory dance when the project is done. I personally do not drink any alcohol if/when under the car. Besides, usually I'm so focused on the work that my beer gets warm or my coffee gets cold.

I can't remember the last time i had a friend over to help me wrench. it seems I'm always working on their cars anyway :). Next in line--my friend's 92 accord gets some new brakes on all 4 corners.

I think the basic idea is common sense, and depends upon the person's idea of drinking. When I drink, I have one, maybe two beers 98% of the time. So me "drinking" while working in the garage is far different from the person that has a 12 pack when drinking.

Add to that, everybody is affected differently. I've seen guys that are 300 lbs that get stupid after 2 beers, and a 120 lb woman that can kill a 12 pack and still not act stupid.

For most people with a reasonable tolerance, 1 or 2 beers under most conditions isn't a problem with me *if you're not at work*.

I work in a bike shop and there is always beer after work. Our shop is different in the fact that all the mechanics have to help customers as they come up to the desk and also answer phones. I also have OCD like crazy and tend to check bolts and things I have tightened multiple times to make sure they are correct. After we close, if we have lots of work to do we often stay a few hours late and have beers and continue working. I find that not having to answer phones or talk to customers, having the music blasting and having a few beers makes me about 10 times more efficient.

I don't drink. If you are working in my garage you don't drink. If you are watching me work drink whatever you want.

I have nothing against people drinking and doing work in a garage or workshop as the best people I know drink copious amounts of alcohol and operate grinders, chainsaws, firearms, etc. and haven't had an accident yet(they have been doing it for decades). As for me I only operate a file while drunk but YMMV.

I usually work on stuff with backseat mechanic buddys arround, they are usually drinking and bring me beers (keep the cases in the detached house (at least someone has to be sober enough to stumble to the house)) that I end up placing around the garage, till I'm done and we realize I have 4-6 beers open, at which point they promptly disappear.

I have a refrigerator out in the garage that is always stocked with beer. I usually have one beer each day, so if I'm outside working hard in the garage or doing yard work I'll usually have a cold one. I rarely have a second until I'm in clean up mode. I'm never "buzzed" and doing yard work or wrenching on the car/outdoor power equipment. No rules needed, just common sense. Plus, I'm almost always alone when I'm working in the garage so I don't have to worry about other people's stupid behavior.

This thread is all the proof needed to confirm that the pussification of the modern male is complete. People that act like a power tool cannot be in operation when there is an open beer in the vicinity have taken it to an extreme level. Today I put on my big boy pants and if I decide to have a beer in the garage the world will not stop spinning on its axis and it won’t make me run my head through a woodchipper. Common sense needs to be used in the garage, be careful when using dangerous tools and if you choose to have a beer don’t drink enough to be intoxicated.

I may have a beer in the shop if cleaning up, or just having a ******** session with friend, but that is about it. My new shop has a patio area outside just for sitting down and shooting the bull with friends.

None, for legal reasons( not old enough :lol_hitti ). My dad doesnt drink, so nope, no drinking in the shop.

Now, listening to the stereo loud is a completly different matter. 2 of them setting basicaly on top of eachother, old cheapo tube one that requires wire wiggling sometimes, and a set of computer speakers with a 7" sub and 2 tweeters to fill out the rest of the spectrum. :pimpflash:pimpflash

Led Zeppelin shakes the windows.:lol_hitti

we'll be right over to help

Never puke by the door of the van thats my rule.

When working we may hava a few but when we are done the beer and pizza comes and we drink and eat. friends come for the beer and pizza the key is to only have a 6 pack on hand till the job is done. at my brothers place thier is a keg tapped all the time but when i am there we all only have a few till the job is don or some one had to much. then we quit for the day the play horse shoes or pool. while we ait for dinner this is useally a monday thing as thats the day we are all off work.

my steadfast rule, is if you drink my last beer, you better run and get some more.
i normally work alone, i get more work done that way. Ive usually got a beer open, usually gets warm before i finish it. if anyone drops by, i stop what i'm doing, and have a cool one or 2, after that i'm usally ready to head home or grab something to eat.

some of my best ideas have come to me after having a couple of beers:thumbup:

When the beer comes out the power tools get put away. Exceptions might be cordless screwdrivers. Ladders and drinking are a poor combination too.

In our younger days we would rate car repairs by how many beers it took.
Brake job? 6 beers.
Pull an engine? 12 pack minimum.

Uh. A beer fridge is meant for a garage. To summarize, drinking is permitted. I prefer woodchuck cider in my garage though.

My Man-fridge lives in the kitchen at the moment as I've yet to build my Man-cave in the back garden. Then, emptying a few cans of beer/cider will be an essential part of garage-time.

Years ago I thought it was a good idea to smoke some pot before swapping a radiator on a S10. Lets just say it didn't get done that day!
