Smart Switches

I just added smart switches to my garage. Due to the size, I wanted to add these instead of putting 3 or 4 way switches all over the building. The amount of wiring saved to do this was incredible.

I have 9 separate light circuits in a 70"x 96" building & was nervous about the reliability of long distance between the switches.

I used the Smart Things hub with GE/Jasco Z-wave switches & they worked out very well.

The switch by the man door is programmed to shut off all lights & my switch for the lights above the work bench is programmed to also turn on the adjacent row of lights.

I also have "all on" & "all off" routines programmed in my phone for easy access wherever I am. It's great when I go to the house & decide not go back. 1 Click & I shut everything off.

I still have more to do, but so far, It's working out great.

For the price, I think smart switches are a GREAT value for commonly used spaces. In the future when I'm in a more permanent home/garage/shop, I want to play with HomeSeer and their Zwave scene capable smart switch. It wasn't compatible with my Wink hub, so I don't have any now.

Which GE switches did you use? How is the delay in executing "functions" with them? I've played around with making my GE dimmer switches do multiple functions on my Wink hub, but its kind of shoddy and there's too much delay for me to be happy with it. I think Smarthings has a better interface for that sort of thing.

I have a Smarthings hub and a broad mix of devices.

Smarthings has issues. It's gotten better but all last week I lost control of half my switches, tons of delay, routines running during the day that were set for after dark etc.

Database issue on their end. But yeah when it works it's great!

I like using open/close sensors to activate routines plus the security functions.

About 6 months ago I tried out the Leviton Decora smart switches. So far I really like them. I now have 6 switches, 1 dimmer and 2 plug in module. The neat part was no hub was needed. They communicate via wifi and the My Leviton app. You can can set Activities and schedules. The only thing that I don't like in you cannot set a schedule with multiple on/off settings per day. One of the plug in modules I have controlling a hot water circulation pump.

Which GE switches did you use? How is the delay in executing "functions" with them?

I used model 12722 on/off Paddle switch.

You can see a slight delay when doing an "all off" or "all on" as it relays to all 9 circuits. Takes a little over a second from start to finish as the lights don't all go off at the exact same instance.

From a phone command it takes about 2 seconds to activate a light.
