I wasn't planning on going to any sales today, but my neighbor sends me a picture of a BUNCH of old NOS USA Cman wrenches he said he got for $17 or something like that. Guy used to work in the Springdale plant back in the day. He's moving so he's trying to sell everything in his house.

So I go there and I'm *really* trying not to buy any more trays of sockets, even though he would sell a whole tray for like $40...

Instead I go for the large sockets only, and wrenches. Unfortunately he didn't have any bagged sets of wrenches except for the older style ratcheting with the lever on the back (chinese but still nice). I also found a couple bagged sets of the 3/8" impact sockets, Metric & SAE... I don't know how or why but those were chinese too.

Lots and lots of USA wrenches... Combo, DBE, DOE, metric, sae, chrome, black oxide... I got some huge DBE's that I've never seen that large before!

I grabbed the largest of the sockets he had, mostly metric, some SAE. Also got a fair amount of 1/2" drive impact sockets and even some 3/4" impacts...

Found a 3/4" USA Flex head breaker!

A USA 1/4" speeder, still has the sticker on it.

Oh, I also found a little 1/2-9/16 DBE Stubby? Never seen one of those. Seems like it would be a super handy backup wrench.

Still going through the boxes, not really sure what all is in there... lol.

Good score on some of that! I have a set of those Craftsman ratcheting reversible wrenches and those same impact sockets. I like them both. Of course they were purchased before I realized sizes are skipped, so I'm jealous of that 18MM wrench and a few of those sockets.

Sort of non tool related, but I found this cast iron fritter pan (?) at a garage sale. I'm going to use it to cast some ingots.

You have a bread stick pan.

Please don't use that cast iron pan for ingots. Vintage cast iron is getting hard to find these days. No one appreciates good old black iron... Most pans were cast much thinner and lighter and SMOOTHER than they manufacture now. even the bottoms are smooth and don't scratch the "glass" top stoves.

You wouldn't believe how nice my old (pre 1958) Griswold fry pan cooks on a state of the art induction cook top!

Maybe restore it and use? or pass it on to someone who will bring it back to life and appreciate it for what it it really is. I think I speak for a lot of the people on this site when i say that old tools have an "honesty" in their history, quality, feel and use that new stuff will never achieve, ever. When i hold an old tool, i wonder who used it and what was fixed with it... Think of the hard working honest people the food from this pan fed. And the world we have around us today that THEY built.

JAKES flea market finally opened this weekend!
I was busy Saturday, so just a quick trip this morning. It was colder than earlier in the week, and I foolishly had only a light jacket. Once my coffee was gone, bone-chilling wind crept in. Mrs LesserSon wisely took only a quick turn and headed back to the car. Nevertheless, glad to have it open again. Spotted and resisted a wood chalkboard compass, a 10” and 14” Oswego Tool Co wood-handled Stillson wrenches, a big Kreauter DOE, and a Millers Falls eggbeater drill. Also these two [S.R.] 1/2dr sockets. (Note that stamped letters are sized differently in the two examples. Is there a thread for SR sockets yet? Has anyone figured out who made them?)
My first purchase was actually a mistake - I had made a mental note to look for Vlchek Flying-V slipjoints like I’d let slip by me a couple weeks ago in a different joint, so pounced on these V-shield ones today, only afterward recalling they weren’t what I was looking for.
Before hypothermia took me, picked up some 1/2dr sockets: 2 Bonney, a Snap-on, and a mystery. The Bonney were a 4132 1" 8pt and a 1940s (CV) D38 1-3/16" 12pt. I guess the SO is a c1925/6 NO.180 9/16 6pt, but the stamping is faint. The mystery is also 6pt, marked 5/8, but I don’t see a logo. The fact that its part number (20) is the 32nds of ⅝ is probably a clue.

YEA !!!!!!! :rocker:
The local Flea Market opened for the season today !
Now maybe I can get my hunting Mojo jumpstarted (it's been on sabbatical for the last few months).

The day started in the 30's with a windchill in the low 20's, so I didn't bother to get out until later. I wasn't expecting a large turnout, but when I got there I saw a lot more vendors than usual on a cold opening day. I guess the slow winter had them itching to unload and start filling their wallets again.

Backing up :
At easter, my cousin asked if I could find her a descent snowblower for cheap money. Her husband leaves early in the morning for work and doesn't come home 'til late at night (he gets out of work at 5:30) (this is an issue in their marriage that she's been trying to work on, but it's been a solo effort for 20yrs). He digs his car out of the snowbank, and leaves all the other cars snowed in, so my cousin is left to do all the shoveling by herself. It's a small driveway, but a PITA to clean when your "partner" won't lift a finger for anyone but himself.

Present Day :
I pulled into the FM and parked my truck. Right there in front of me was the perfect snowblower for my cousin. I get out and ask about it. It's old, but in good shape and runs smooth. He only wants $75, but me being me, I chat him up about everything else under the sun then throw out "you wouldn't be able to take $60 for the blower. would you ?.

He thinks it over and as the other tables are packing up, decides that he would rather have $60 in his pocket than have to load the snowblower back into his pickup. :D Drove it straight over to my cousins house and dumped it in the back yard.

So now, she has a new snowblower, and I have her off my back. For now.

Lawnboy 522R (late 90's) w/ a 5hp Tecumseh motor. $60

100_2682.jpg 100_2683.jpg

100_2684.jpg 100_2686.jpg

Most of the other tables there were packing up by that time, but I did make one score for myself.

$5
S-K 40128 1/2dr 7/8" socket
---- 40128 1/2dr 7/8" socket
---- 40161 1/2dr 5" extension
Herbrand J-5 3/8dr Van-Chrome ratchet

My last outing of the weekend yielded a few cool bits. A handful of narrow band SK deeps I needed for a set, a 23mm Bonney socket, plomb 7/16 socket, proto pebble flare wrench, some 1/4 drive sockets and a wizard adjustable all for 10 bucks.
IMG_2362.JPG

And a brand new looking set of Snap-On vacuum grips for $2.

Not much here today. I went to one that opened at noon just to get out of the house (nice sunny day finally after 3-4 of rain...) But I guess everyone expected more rain.

All that one had was a new red aluminum water bottle for a buck. I'll use it for camp fuel for overnighters

Just went to my first estate sale in a loooong time and came up with this odd set. The Indestro Select Steel DOE's caught my eye right away, and I wondered what kind of box it was. I was quite surprised to find it is also Indestro! The most recent catalog AA has is 1962, and I don't remember plastic boxes that early. Anyone know what era this set is from? I'm thinking early 70's, but was Indestro still around then?
It's a pretty complete set, with just a wrong deep socket - an Indestro Super 5/8 - it probably came with a 13/16 spark plug socket - an unbranded extension and missing the ratchet.
I'll look through my stuff - I think I may have an Indestro Select spark plug socket, but sadly I don't have any ratchets of the right type.
Another thing is that there's more than an inch of empty space between the tools and the inside of the lid. Anyone know what was there? There must have been something to hold the tools in place, but it's nowhere to be seen.

The little Williams Superjustable was a nice bonus, though it isn't in very good shape.

Yes, http://alloy-artifacts.org/duro-indestro.html says
"Sometime during the '60s the Indestro operations were formally merged into Duro Metal Products, and the tools began appearing with dual brands "Duro-Indestro". The tool lines were "harmonized", which unfortunately meant that some of the special higher-end features of the Duro-Chrome tools were dropped. The company continued operating through the 1970s and 1980s, and was finally closed in 1990."

And http://toolarchives.com/node/1250 says
"By 1974, and possibly earlier, Indestro is being referred to as "Duro Metal Products Co., Indestro Division." By the early 1980's, the company as a whole is referred to as Duro/Indestro. ... On May 18, 1990, Duro transferred their trademarks to JAF, Inc."

Opening day of the flea market here today also, been nothing going on for yard/estate sales either, winter *****. Place was only about half full, but I did manage to spend $19. for these items. Highlight is probably the brand new Pittsburg 1/4 & 3/8 double ended extra long flex ratchet.

We went to a sale in San Anselmo which is in Marin County this morning. The Craigslist ad started with “Tools Tools Tools” so I was hopeful. When we arrived there were almost no tools on the tables. I talked my way into his garage with some difficulty and spotted three Kennedy boxes. I zeroed in on the Machinists box and was surprised when he was willing to let it go at a reasonable price. After removing 20 lbs of import (so called) tools, I came away with a few worthwhile tools and the box and didn’t break the bank. Tools included Proto, Snap-on, S-K and Craftsman.

Maybe one of the Plano tackle boxes? :dunno:

Could be, but so far (and I haven't looked all that far) any that are big enough (needs to be 12 - 12 1/2" x 8 - 8 1/2") are too tall. Height can be only 1 1/4". Maybe two 6x8 inchers?

I'm hoping someone in the wide, wild world of GJ has one of these Indestro Sets with whatever the innards are and can post a foto.

Meanwhile, I did find my Indestro Select spark plug socket, and it's a match. That only leaves the ratchet and extension to complete the set. Yee hah!

One sale today on the third day. I did go two days ago and everything was way overpriced ($200 radial arm saw, $125 router, etc) but I figured the end of the last day they would be willing to make some deals.

Craftsman King Seeley drill press. (bought it for the motor which I'll move to my bigger craftsman drill press then resell this)

If it's too tall with the cover on, try measuring how tall it would be if you take the cover off.
Since the gray case already has a lid, you shouldn't need one if the tray you use is tall enough, but not too tall.

Man that looks so good. I remember a tiny little BBQ place in Magnolia, TX right along the railroad tracks, called the "BBQ Hut", long gone now (they removed all the buildings by the tracks probably early 00's) but it had the best bbq and sweet tea... I would frequently stop by there on my way between College Station & Houston...

I always look for new places to eat good grub when I go huntin. I found one place in Boyd Texas a few weeks ago, that makes Fried cheese burgers. Man they were awesome!!

Stopped by a pawn and dug out a bunch of Mac including a chrome deep, some metric impacts, a lug nut flip socket, and a few Torx.

A couple Blue Point, and a 7/8 Craftsman damaged lug socket to compliment a 3/4 found recently. All for $23. Not a screaming deal but not bad.

This was posted on our local kijiji( like craigslist).

I had to look really close, but yes that is a snap on 1 5/16” laying on top. It is an soex42 in very good condition. The others are a mix of SK, Proto etc.
I offered him $20 for 5 wrenches and he said sure. The SO is worth $150 by itself. It’s a good day.

Sweet deal... Kijiji used to be a thing in the US too, and actually just a few weeks ago I was randomly wondering what happened to it, and found out it had moved to Canadian-only some time back. :)

The little Williams Superjustable was a nice bonus, though it isn't in very good shape.

I picked up that same Indestro set the other day! Mine was missing the wrenches but had the ratchet.
