Looking for Metric tap and Die set recomendation

Howdy, lots of tap and die sets out there. I need a good one metric only. Any suggestions besides Snap on? Also has any one used thread restoration tools? My main need is chasing / cleaning automotive threads.

LANG 971 set. They straighten the bent threads rather than of cut right through them like taps and dies do.

I have snap ons rebrand of this. They are fantastic and have paid for themselves many times over. If you have a snap on rep I recommend spending more and buying it from him, I’ve broken a few.

For tap and die, I have this set from eBay but very similar to HF one. covers almost everything I needed except a few very specialty weird threads... like the caliper guide pin of the VW front caliper (M9x1.25mm) or 1/2-28 for the oil burner nozzle. weird ones. but for most uses... this HF set works well... I don't tap rare metals or hardened metals, just average steel and aluminum stuff found on cars and machines/tools..

I also got a craftsman re-brand of that LANG 971 plus the add on set... those works wonders if you are fixing threads... It also don't have odd ball sizes...sometimes you needed.

Whatever you buy, make sure the sizes are engraved in them and not laser etched onto the surface. As they age you will no longer be able to read the etched ones. Mac and Snap On's are etched. My Mac sets are nearly 20 years old and can't read half of them. Just bought a new Snap On set and before they ever got used our house flooded and they got wet. Cleaned them up as soon as possible but can't hardly read any of them. Fuggin' blows. Tools should be made to last a lifetime, etching isn't the answer.

This question comes up every couple of weeks. Virtually all of the chaser taps and dies are made by Lang, formerly Kastar, regardless of whose name is on the box. They come in various size sets of SAE and metric. Big box, auto parts and truck brands all sell them. Buy where you find the set you need at the lowest price. All the same stuff. For open stock, like an odd replacement or fill in, Snap On sells individulal pieces. They sell to anybody, online with free shipping and no minimum.

For cutting taps and dies , Hanson used to make decent maintenance grade carbon steel tap and die sets. That is where the truck brands come from, at jacked up prices. There is such a wide difference in quality and price on cutting taps,and dies it is hard to make a recommendation. High speed steel is better than carbon steel but Chinese HSS can be total garbage, like those cheap sets on ebay or HF.
