Howdy, lots of tap and die sets out there. I need a good one metric only. Any suggestions besides Snap on? Also has any one used thread restoration tools? My main need is chasing / cleaning automotive threads.
Thank You
This question comes up every couple of weeks. Virtually all of the chaser taps and dies are made by Lang, formerly Kastar, regardless of whose name is on the box. They come in various size sets of SAE and metric. Big box, auto parts and truck brands all sell them. Buy where you find the set you need at the lowest price. All the same stuff. For open stock, like an odd replacement or fill in, Snap On sells individulal pieces. They sell to anybody, online with free shipping and no minimum.
For cutting taps and dies , Hanson used to make decent maintenance grade carbon steel tap and die sets. That is where the truck brands come from, at jacked up prices. There is such a wide difference in quality and price on cutting taps, and dies it is hard to make a recommendation. High speed steel is better than carbon steel but Chinese HSS can be total garbage, like those cheap sets on ebay or HF.
